You can now pre-order Xbox Play Anywhere titles from the Windows Store

Microsoft introduced the Xbox Play Anywhere program at E3 2016 just a few months ago. It allows people to buy games to play on both their Xbox console and Windows 10 PCs, paying only once. The highly-anticipated feature also allows gamers to share progress and achievements between the two versions of the same game.

Microsoft has announced that users can now pre-order Xbox games included in the Play Anywhere program from the Windows Store.

The process for pre-ordering games from the Windows Store is fairly simple. All you have to do is search for the title in the Store and then click on "Pre-order" when it shows up. Currently, ReCore, Gears of War 4 and Forza Horizon 3 are the only participating games that can be pre-ordered. The full list of games that are included in the Xbox Play Anywhere program are as follows:

  • Gears of War 4
  • Forza Horizon 3
  • ReCore
  • Sea of Thieves
  • Halo Wars 2
  • Scalebound
  • Killer Instinct Season 3
  • State of Decay 2
  • Ark: Survival Evolved
  • Cuphead
  • We Happy Few
  • Crackdown 3

It is important to note that the program only applies to digital games. Progress between the two versions of included games will be synchronized, with add-ons, DLCs, Season Passes, and achievements being shared between the two devices. This also means that participating games will share Xbox achievements and Gamerscore.

Furthermore, the initiative does not require an Xbox Live Gold membership, which further highlights Microsoft's "One Windows" strategy and the convergence of the Xbox and Windows stores. It is notable that the Xbox Play Anywhere scheme is yet another another instance of the company freeing services and apps from its paid Xbox Live Gold membership program. The program is slated to go live on September 13 with the launch of cross-buy title ReCore.
