Amazon selling lots of smartphones for just one penny with contract

Remember that sale earlier this month where Amazon Wireless sold the new Droid RAZR for just $111.11 for one day? That sounded like a good deal at the time. But now Amazon Wireless has launched yet another sale for the next week and in this event, you can get that same smartphone from Motorola for just one penny.

In fact, the sale allows nearly every smartphone that's offered by Verizon, Sprint and AT&T to be bought with a new line of service for one tiny cent. One big exception is the iPhone 4S which, as usual, is not included in the offer. Unfortunately, the sale also doesn't include the new HTC Titan Windows Phone from AT&T which launched just yesterday.

However there's a bunch of cool devices to choose from, including the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch from Sprint, the Droid Bionic 4G from Verizon, and the Samsung Focus S and Focus Flash Windows Phone from AT&T.  If the smartphone also has a wireless hotspot feature and you decide to turn it on, Amazon Wireless will also give you a $100 Amazon gift card. That should help a little with the monthly fee for that feature. Naturally, you will have to sign up for a new two year contract before you can get the smartphone.

While the contract is the big caveat, if you do need a new line of service, this is a great deal.

But since his contract will still be on Sprint, it wouldn't be considered a new contract at this point?

If you are not grandfathered in to any special pricing or feature, use Google Voice and get a new contract and cancel your old number if it isn't on contract.

I still laugh at the fact that Americans not only get lumped into a contract, but they still have to pay for the phone too.

phone prices are subsidized. We don't pay the full price and, depending on the phone, you may not have to pay for it at all, it just depends on the situation. Smartphones are generally $100-200 which isn't really expensive. And there are contract-less options.
