Apple and News Corp. set to announce The Daily on Wednesday

Invitations to a press event being held by both Apple and News Corp have been sent out over the past week. The event is taking place in New York on February 2 and is set to herald the launch of “The Daily” an iPad only newspaper from Murdoch’s news empire.

According to MacVideo the invites say that Rupert Murdoch, the News Corp CEO will join Eddy Cue, Apple’s head of Internet services on stage to discuss the project, announce the official release date and the new subscription details.

The Daily is set to be a subscription only digital newspaper and one that will only be available for Apple’s iPad. According to reports in the New York Times last year, Rupert Murdoch invested not just £30 million into producing the digital paper, but also around 100 of his staff too.

The Daily is also likely to become the first subscription based content on the iTunes App Store, with weekly payments of around 99c due to be taken out of subscribers iTunes accounts.

If the paper is a success, it expected that many more digital newspapers would be released in a subscription format over the coming months, though with the investment that Rupert Murdoch has put into this project, The Daily could well dominate the news scene on the iPad during the foreseeable future.

the days of print are numbered, but for as much as the digital versions cost, they are going to be numbered for them also....

Rupert Murdoch is that guy who owns Fox News and drove MySpace into the ground, right? Yeah, not that interested in this press conference tbh.

$52 a year for a news paper? I don't get a subscription to a newspaper any more but that feels pretty steep.

In addition why pay for something which can be obtained for free on the internet?

Yeah $52/yr is pretty normal, why pay when you can get it free. Well many news sources are pushing to go this route so eventually we'll see more companies with subscription only services. We are already seeing many that only offer limited services for free users and 'upgraded' service for subscribers.

Already three Murdock newspapers on the iPad - Sun, News of the World, and The Times.
Also the Guardian's i paper is on there (but the app needs improving).

Plus I'm guessing this digital newspaper is just going to be mostly US content?

In the article the investment is in GBP for some reason, may be aimed at the UK as well?

Could be launched on the same day but I'd say this will be more about the daily than anything else - maybe with a release date.

I'm guessing it'll be released on... February 2.

Or, if not done by then, I imagine an introductory special free deal to attract users.
