Apple announces faster syncing with Outlook for MobileMe

Apple has posted on its website that they have improved MobileMe syncing with Microsoft Outlook. This is a step in the right direction for the platform after it faced a very rocky start.

From Apple's website "We've recently improved the performance of MobileMe syncing with Microsoft Outlook on Windows. Contacts and calendars automatically sync whenever a change is made in Outlook, and likewise when a change is made on the web or from another device. To take advantage of this improvement make sure you're using iTunes 8.0.2 and MobileMe Control Panel 1.3 and that you have "sync" set to occur "automatically" in the Control Panel."

For those who have been working through the hiccups of the service this update will come as a welcomed addition as Apple continues to plant its roots in cloud operation.

Nice to see they haven't forgotten about us. I'm hoping for major improvements when the next iPhone is released.

People still pay for this 'service'. $100 for iCloud Computing. Apple stick with making shiny plastic things and let the big dogs handle services. Still no push after having the MS Activesync license longer than Google.

Its nice they are finally getting around to getting that service fixed esp for those that stuck with it since Apple already had a hold of their money. I gave up on the MobileMe service a long way back and just went with Exchange as it was more stable and reliable. One thing I hated about MobileMe was you have to have iTunes with the MobileMe Control Panel (their connector service) for Outlook to be able to stay synced. Outlook just can't connect directly. So I have to load all this extra software on my machines if I want them to stay synced.

am i missing something - how does Outlook enter this with google? I know you can do calendar sync up to google, but you cant do contacts, or can you?

(aka please tell me i can enter soemthing in outlook in the exchange settings, and see all my gmail stuff sycned with google!)

And by "improved the performance of MobileMe syncing" they mean they finally enabled push, which is a feature supported by the ActiveSync protocol.

Is it just me, or does this announcement seem like Apple trying to one up Google for their Google Sync announcement yesterday.

no push from what i understand

I dont think it's even true push - it's just (probably) faster syncing!

As somebody has thrown away hard earned cash on Mobileme, I deeply regret it - I was an impatient moron.

I couldnt give a stuff about the photo upload stuff (from iphone i see it just emails it, great), I couldnt give a stuff about the idrive (for which i have yet to get working within windows), and the only reason i got it was for contacts and calendar sync. Google answered, and answered well - free. My thanks to microsoft for helping it happen with a robust technology!

No this is true push. It's not because they are trying to one up anyone. They released this patch for Mac OS X a few months back, this is just a little late for Windows, about time though. Syncing is instant for me in every aspect, no issues.
