Apple announces the iPad mini and iPad 4th generation

The leaks started a few months back and today Apple finally pulled the cloth back on its smaller version of the iPad called the iPad mini. The device has a 7.9 inch display, 4:3 aspect ratio, lightning dock connector, and front and rear cameras.

In addition, it uses an A5 CPU, LTE is onboard, has 10 hr battery life and runs iOS6.

The device is clearly targeting the Nexus 7 and the Amazon Kindle Fire market and with a starting price of $329, Apple is finally breaking into the lower price point demographics.

Apple is also using the same resolution as the iPad 2, while not a "retina" screen, all apps will scale natively to the screen which makes all available apps good to go for this new form factor.

Apple also updated the full sized iPad to the 4th generation that features an A6X processor, lighting bolt connector, faster wifi connection, an updated camera and still comes in black and white.

It will be interesting to see if the iPad mini musters up the same amount of hype as the launch of the previous iPads. Seeing as it is simply a smaller version of an existing product, we suspect it may not be as heavily anticipated as previous items.

That being said, it is an Apple product and it seems that anything they release will sell in the millions during the first week and we have little reason to believe that the iPad mini won't dominate the market like its bigger brother.

Have to say if I was going to buy a tablet today I'd be giving serious consideration to the iPad Mini now. People keep banging on about Surface, etc - great, I hope it does well. I'm all for competition.

But (and I know it seems to upset a lot of people to say it) but you can't beat the ecosystem and sheer amount of applications available now for the iDevices. If I was coming into tablet ownership now, I'd be looking at a) What sort of size device do I think I need and b) What platform has the best / widest array of applications.

I wouldn't want to take a gamble on Surface just yet personally. I think it's a great looking product, and of course it's Microsoft so will have plenty of cash thrown at it. But the iPad ecosystem is well established.

And as usual I say all this as someone with absolutely zero interest in seeing any one specific vendor succeed - in the last few years I've been an iPhone, Android and Windows Phone owner (currently Windows Phone 7.5 - and very happy!) so really have no strong bias towards any vendor. This is just how I feel about it

I love how these days "innovation" to apple means taking an old model and making a little smaller.

Well done guys. Splendid effort.

Also LOL $1700 for a dual core laptop. GTFO.

Smaller doesn't make it less than.. normal iPad might be great for in your lap, and such.. But I find them a little too big for me to be comfortable using on the go..

What spec, other than physical size, is inferior on the mini as opposed to the iPad 2? The processor and resolution are the same, and many of the other features are actually upgraded (cameras and dock port).

Ew, too expensive Apple, you would've had something at $299, but with those dated specs, you blew it, and with the Nexus 7 getting that resolution upgrade soon.. damn...what a fail, Apple.

Meh @ iPad mini - for another aspect ratio fail ... still using the increasingly obsolete 4:3 format.

It might have a very high resolution, but it'll still be crap for watching full width movies and 16:9
content like TV shows made in HD, but ideal for watching archive stuff that predates 16:9 TV's.

With that in mind, it'll be perfect for watching classic Knight Rider and The A-Team on the go!

Having reviewed the specs, it's even worse ... only 1024x768 resolution. How on Earth could
anyone realistically say the iPad mini is any better than the Google/ASUS Nexus 7 tablet?

iPad mini = another epic fail from Cupertino!

You do realise there is more to things than just specs right? There are WAY more apps that are better designed for tablet than there are on Android. It's the great apps that will help it sell in large numbers not the specs

As someone who owns a Nexus 7.. I can say that..

16x9 is great on a desktop, laptop, watching movies, but on a tablet it really makes no difference..

Add to that Android is not as "polished" as iOS.. There are still lots of bugs in the OS, and a much more limited supply of "quality" apps..

Question: Quality of apps? What about when Surface Pro launches? The "quality of apps" will swing right to Microsoft. Desktop programs running on a tablet. Can't beat that.

Desktop apps on a tablet haven't exactly been stellar in the past, why should it be any different now? There's a reason few people bought tablets before they started running a mobile OS instead of a desktop OS.

lets see what this its a FAIL but it will still sell and mostly become a WIN

1- They do not discontinue ipad 2
2- They will sell the ipad 3 and 4 at the same price?
3- The "new" ipad mini its just a small ipad 2
4- The price its bad, its so overpriced.... even at 300 the dated specs, low res its an insult that they even want to compare it to the nexus 7 which will get a bump on storage space YET its still cheaper

iPad 3 has gone completely as if it never existed! No longer available from Apple. I'm not sure the low-res counts as an "insult", it will look better than the iPad 2 as it's smaller display and a lot of people were fine with iPad 2. Also keeping the resolution the same means every apps will work perfectly for it, giving it a retina display would have made it more expensive and Apple were targeting the cheap end of the market. Anyway Nexus 7 might have better specs but the iPad mini will have better apps optimised for tablet which is what a lot of consumers care about.

eilegz said,

Actually the mini's specs are sort of a combination of the specs for the iPad 2 (resolution and processor) and the later models (camera, dock port, etc.).

Why are they still selling iPad2? Seems silly. Will iPad 3 just go away?

iPad 3 seems to have immediately vanished. No longer for sale on the UK Apple store but iPad 2 still there.

I dont think anayone noted them drawing down on stock. I wonder what they will do with remaining ipad 3s

In a few months they'll retire the ipad2 and come out with this revolutionary "new ipad" that is exactly the same as the ipad3.

If they made it 720p, then they would have scaling issues with nearly every iPad app out there.

While I'm aware it makes no difference, I'm a little confused at Apple's decision to name the 4th gen iPad the "iPad with Retina Display". That makes no sense, since the previous generation also had a "Retina Display". This is where their naming convention starts to get ridiculous.

Since the New iPad, they've got the Macbook Pro and Macbook Pro with Retina Displays. It's just to fall in line with that naming scheme and to be consistent

Looks like the name "iPad with Retina Display" is just used to distinguish it from the other current models. When comparing it to the 3rd gen, Apple calls it the 4th generation iPad.

I have to confess I didn't see the iPad 4th Gen coming. I bought my Wife a 32Gb 3 on Saturday for her Xmas from John Lewis. It's still sealed in its box so its going back to the store for a refund! They are pretty good with refunds so I don't expect any trouble.

I would imagine retail outlets and stores won't be that happy with them either. Another fire sale on the previous generation. Oh goody £10 off!!

Loving the amount of competition there is right now for the consumer. My only issue (and this is a personal one) is that Im not an Apple fan and would like a Windows Tablet however I really don't like Win 8. Android is kind of dumb when used as anything other than a mobile phone OS (and it is my phone OS of choice)

So nothing for me to purchase but still some great improvements in hardware which is always good!

I feel sorry for anyone with an iPad 3. 6 months later and it's replaced with something new. Sure, it's still usable but.....

Is Flash on any new non-Windows x86/64 tablet anymore ? It's been killed off in Android, and I believe BB.. Is there a flash for Windows RT ?

iPad retina display stole the shows by breaking the routine of yearly update (Awesome)...

iMac stun the PC desktop market with astounding thin design (totally expected)...

Macbook Pro 13 retina display has just proven why apple notebook is still the best in the world (Everyone knew it was coming) !

Trick question: the average Joe thinks they're both iPads.

If you must get a tablet, wait for Surface Pro - the god of all tablets. Maximum features, the only tablet that impresses.

I got one.. would rather an iPad Mini..

Nexus 7 isn't bad for $200, but if you are already in the iOS ecosystem, then this iPad Mini is great, and not as bulky as the full sized iPad..

According to CNET liveblog, iPad mini price: $329 (16GB WiFi) - $459 (16GB LTE) - $429 (32GB WiFi) - $559 (32GB LTE) - $519 (64GB WiFi) - $649 (64GB LTE)

I had a talk with a mobile developer around 8 hours ago and he said "for example the I pad mini coming out today"

I said lol , knowing he leaked that info a bit too early.

$329 for the iPad Mini. As much as I hate to say it but the average consumers will get this over a surface. As much as people say we asked for an unrealistic price from the surface this is why we wanted a lower price.

Keep in mind Google is launching something on the 29th too. The tablet market is finally getting interesting for consumers.

Indeed. And if the specs are true the Nexus tablet will be smashing the iPad in ALL aspects hardware-related.

It's not being sold as iPad 4, it's being sold just as iPad and if you look at the small print in stores you may find it saying 4th Gen somewhere

Yeah, who do Apple think they are? Increasing the specs of their products like that. And the audacity of keeping the price the same - truly screwing their customers over with that one!

If you bought it less than 30 days ago, then you can take it to an Apple store and get it exchanged for a new (as in new generation) iPad.

KibosJ said,

No has to be from an apple store. I know many people who have returned things 2-4 months old never opened. Just talk to them and they take care of you. But since its not an apple store idk what to tell you

iPad is deemed to follow the iPhone. I can see it happening next year.

Am I correct in thinking you can now buy an adapter for an HDMI port, SD Card reader etc? So these aren't bundled with it? So £30 per adapter I bet? Why the f**k not just build it into the darn device?

Funny how you say that when microsoft couldnt put a native port in the Surface for HDMI or VGA, $40 adapters do the job .

The rest of us enjoy not needing any of those since it can all be done wireless now. Here I thought Apple was suppose to be behind the times, and yet, they are moving forward with wireless technology, and everyone else acts like a floppy drive is still needed.

Richard Cousins said,

For a techy person probably not, for an average person, defiantly yes, an iPad is something someone goes out to buy and looks forward to it, replacing a PC is one of those things the average user dreads doing.

True, but I'll take the speeds of copying files off of a USB stick better than Wi-Fi any day.

Its not about being behind the times. Not everyone lives on the web, or has access to constant wi-fi. I don't want all my info/data on the cloud. SD Card Slot, USB Port etc should be standard.

No, I think some people would be apt to switch or even buy a Surface even if they're not geeky. Take my wife. Not a geek whatsoever and she is already wanted to give up our iPad for a Surface because it will play flash and it has a USB port. I was shocked when she mentioned she didn't like our iPad recently because of the lack of Flash. I actually shed a tear.

Surface come with WiFi & BT. Others OEMs are adding NFC besides given us the option of USB, HDMI and SD cards expansion slots.
And guess which company is missing NFC & the others options?

Richard Cousins said,

You and briangw bring up good points, except forget the reality of the situation. Us techies care about transfer speeds and don't want everything we have on the cloud. The rest of the world, however, doesn't care. They want something that simple works. That is why on a per device comparison, the iPad is winning. Out of the box, the iPad just works for the common costumer. Because that is what the mass market wants, it is what they get, and our opinions mean nothing.

Pushing things forward? More like pushing you deeper into their ecosystem. They are going hand in hand with the carriers again. They want you connected even though they are "nickel and diming" us to death with data charges. This push to the cloud is not for you it is for the industry to make more money from you.
