Apple may finally be revamping its earbuds

While Apple's long been praised for its music players and smartphones, one area the company's never received many accolades for is its earbuds, which come bundled with the aforementioned devices. According to leaked pictures and video, however, that may change when Apple's new iPhone is announced.

New video and pictures posted in a blog post on Viatnamese website Tinh te claim to show the new earbuds, which have been redesigned to better direct sound in a user's ear canal. According to the blog post, the earbuds have a smaller profile than Apple's current version and feature improved sound quality. Specifically, the bass in the new earbuds is "more powerful," and the earbuds "fit in the ear without discomfort." The earbuds are said to be manufactured at a Viatnamese factory operated by Phax Co.

The individual who uploaded the video and pictures bolstered his claims by providing an image of the cord, which has the following printed on it: "Designed by Apple in California. Assembled in Vietnam." The poster also stated the build quality of the earbuds are what he would expect from an Apple product, although he stated he was unable to confirm their authenticity.

Currently, the earbuds that come bundled with Apple products have a rating of less than 2.5 of 5 stars on Apple's store website. Many reviews on the website state the earbuds have poor sound quality and durability. The earbuds have been largely unchanged since Apple launched the original iPod in 2001.

Apple's new iPhone is expected to be announced at an event later this month, with the new smartphone's release coming shortly after.

Not to sound gross, but they look like they have edges/places where ear wax could easily gather. But any improvement in durability would be welcomed!

Alot of people seem to slam the sound quality of Apples ear buds, but they really aren't that bad at all. In fact the Apple ear buds are probably some of the best in terms of sound quality. Of course the catch is that ear buds are generally inferior to "in-ear" phones. Build quality has always been pretty mediocre at best as well.

More powerful bass does not make better sound quality. If the bass overpowers the midtones & the treble, then you've still got crap audio, because you're cutting off 2/3rds of the sound spectrum.

It was merely an example given in the blog post; the blog post didn't mention treble, but it did mention overall improvements in sound quality and improved bass.

about time.. any portable i buy i might as well throw the earbuds in the garbage in the store before i leave..
Luckily the price of technology is coming down more and more. I almost always buy sony earbuds and they make some descent mid range / price ones and 4 years ago what cost me 99$ now costs me 25$ (neodynium magnet)
I feel sorry for people that use cheap buds they are missing out on sooo much !

Big difference in sound quality from the different price ranges
but i think people should TRY and find alternatives than the cheap bundled crap.
comparing them can be night and day in quality !

This.

So that I don't have to spend additional money to buy a new pair of in ears. I literally bought the Skullcandy I have now just because I *hate* non-in ears, no matter how good quality/sounding they are.

They simply don't fit in my ears

This is Apple though, clearly the fault is with your ears. You have to have Apple proprietary ears that are only Apple compatible.

About time, the current ear buds are horrible and a nuisance to anyone near the user as they leak serious amounts of audio. More that once I have asked someone what they have their sound level set to and usually the are not even that loud, but I can follow their music from 6 feet away..

Sorry, but I disagree. Mine are from the generation right before they put a camera on the iPod, when they revamped them a bit to fit in your ear better. They don't leak sound as you suggest, even when I max the volume (I check every time I listen to a song that's sort of a guilty pleasure and rather embarrassing otherwise lol).

Exactly. I have a friend with a fake pair of apple earbuds and his somehow stayed together longer than my real ones!

Default Apple earphones are basically worth $1.99, but they charge around $30 for them.

Haha yeah though I think $1.99 might be an overshoot, the earphones that are sold in 99p shops here last longer than apple ones.

They are free if you bother to call. I've never had a problem getting a replacement pair for any of my iPod's or iPhones.

The €29 Apple's charging is completely ludicrous.

Hey, it's the market. It's actually one of the least expensive out there. Forget about Dollorama and crap like this, the sound is horrendous and the lifetime is not even a quarter of a year. I remember paying $80 back then for a pair of Sennheiser that was never as good as the Apple's original earbuds. I always caught static discharges during winter, and they hurt my eyes ! At least, this doesn't happen with Apple's.

There's room for improvement though with the silicon, the controls and the right earbud.

They should be ear plugs. Like shures or sennheisers. No more sound leaking and you can enjoy music at lower volumes as it blocks most of the outside noise.

Used Shure E2C earphones with my nano since 2005, and they're still going strong on my SII. Cable is getting a bit frayed over the ear, but they still work

Finally, someone with a comment worthy to read.
I agree, noise cancellation is the best possible thing for earbuds. If anyone disagrees, well f*ck 'em. Apple clearly has the technology down, device wise. Maybe they should spend a little more time improving their earbuds. Just saying.
We're in 2012 - I don't understand why we're even still talking about dumb *ss stuff like this. 2012 people! GET IT RIGHT ALREADY!!

bass is more powerful. Wonderful. Now while I'm on the train every day, I will be able to hear the music coming from everyone's earbuds more clearly. Seriously, Apple needs to design the earbuds and I-devices so that it cannot go above a certain volume level. If others can hear it, it's TOO LOUD!

Did they replace the connector with a proprietary nightmare that looks like a smurf penis?

You've seen a smurf penis?

But the preview image still shows the earbud.

if it were legit, why would someone need to hide their video

There is a HUGE aftermarket for headphones for Apple devices, so it's obvious that Apple would be reluctant to update their shipped headphones for the past 10 years.

What is in it for them?

I don't think there is much in it for them. They already sell their products with sub-premium headphones at a premium price and the consumers don't seem to mind. I'd say they are in a sweet spot.

Please come back to this world instead of euphoria world... I doubt they are getting a cut.
