Apple to announce HDD-less iPods tomorrow?

Apple will tomorrow unveil revamped iPods - the first without a hard drive - and iPod Nanos at an event to be held tomorrow, if the leaks and rumours of the last few weeks prove accurate. Observers are expecting Apple to take the wraps off a new iPod with a design derived not from past versions of the player but from the iPhone. It appears to be the long-awaited widescreen video-centric iPod, with a big display, touchscreen control, Wi-Fi connectivity and Flash storage in place of a hard drive - as predicted in February this year.

Quite what that will do the player's storage capacity remains unclear at this stage. Certainly, even 32GB of Flash will cost rather more than a 30GB hard drive, for all Apple's billion-dollar deals with Flash suppliers.

I will only be interested if they can make the firmware stable so that it wont f* up the player when you unplug it too soon.

It definitely won't be 32gb flash, apple will not be the first manufacturer to sell mp3 players with this capacity. I'd say for certain 4gb 8gb and possibly 16gb capacities. I'm curious to see if they've got anything else up there sleeves besides different form factors and possibly wi-fi and touchscreen... if not I'd say this may be boring

This is simply not going to happen. In order for Apple to release a 6th generation device with WiFi support, 32mb flash and the form factor of a wide screen device they would have to raise the cost. I don't believe most people will be interested in a $499 ipod player. At the moment flash memory is still too expensive. Worse, current hard disk technology will not allow for a 80gig to 120gig hard disk in the device without making it much thicker. The last thing the consumer wants is the return of a brick.

If I had to guess what you will see tomorrow:
1). The Beatles
2). A deal to allow purchased songs to be used as ring-tones for free (and an iphone firmware update)
3). A new flash based nano player with a touch screen, maybe wide screen but much smaller than an iphone and nowhere as much disk space. It will basically be a small upgrade for the existing nano line. I don't see WiFi because of the RIAA and other copyright issues. It will cost more than the current nano player. Apple in response will either kill the nano or more likely the Shuffle (lowend nano becomes the new Shuffle at reduced cost).
4). Nothing about OSX 10.5 at all or any upgrades to the existing line-up of Macintosh hardware.
5). One more thing: Steve Jobs stepping down as CEO of Apple (i.e. beat goes on without me). He will stay on the board.

I don't know why you are all so excited....this has been suggested MONTHS ago...I knew when i was still in Iraq that a new Ipod was coming, rumored to be the 6th Gen, that would have a touch screen, wide screen interface....Then they released the Iphone...which solidified that a new ipod would be coming....I've known this was coming for a while...just want to see the prices on these things.

I don't know why everyone's getting excited either. There's a whole big market of HDD-less music players out there, some really really bloody good ones too that cost like half the price of an iPod, the only difference here will be that it'll have the Apple logo on it.

And the G/UI.

Really looking forward to this special event.. though it has been hyped to DEATH so unless Apple release something other than mindblowing, everyone will end up slating it!

I don't really feel ready to replace my beloved Nano just yet but I must admit that more than 4GB of space would be nice...

It's not just The Registry on this one. Engadget, IFOAppleStore, AppleInsider, ArsTechnica & Mac Rumors are all reporting these rumors. Though I agree, they could have picked from any of the more reputable sites listed above.

the day the iPhone was revealed, I stated right off that I would buy one if it simply came without the phone functionality.

Looks like tomorrow, my hopes will be realized I also liked the rumor of having the iPod receive digital radio, with the ability to buy and download tracks you like. The only downside is, my current iPod has about 50GB of music, photos and video on it...35GB just of music. If they don't offer at least a 60GB version, I'll be in quite the pickle.

I've been predicting this for months. There will be no more HDD-based iPods. iPods with Wi-Fi will be able to stream content to it like a portable Apple TV, and will be able to act as a controller for new iPod Hi-Fis with integrated AirPort Expresses. 16 or 32 GB will be plenty for a local cache.

Because, you know, that model hasn't endowed them something like 140+ million units shipped. Better to change it up now...

...that doesn't make it a good thing for the consumer, though, so go roll your eyes somewhere else.

I actually am Apple so I can tell you what we'll be unveiling tomorrow will be a really big iPod ( approx. 3'x1.6' ), it will have a RAID array of 4 250GB HDDs, totalling 1TB, it will be powered by lead, and it will have screens on both sides so you don't have to worry about holding it the right way up.

Also it will be a phone.

Thats all good and well but what I'm really looking forward to is the embeded copy of Windows Vista with SP3 applied.

Aye, and it'd better run Duke Nukem Forever!

I'm VERY exctied about this! Just hope they aren't all flash memory based as I have over 32GB of music and want tons of extra space for videos etc. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a touchscreen, 80GB+, Wi-Fi, digital radio iPod.
