Apple said on Tuesday that it plans to live stream its September 1 media event today.
The live stream marks the first time for years that the company has provided a video stream of their latest product announcements. Apple will broadcast today's event online using Apple’s HTTP Live Streaming, which is based on open standards according to the company. Although the stream is supposedly based on open standards, it will require a Mac, iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad to watch the stream. Windows users appear to be left in the dark.
Apple's media event will begin at 10AM PST (see other time zones). Rumours suggest that Apple will introduce a new iPod Touch with camera, new iPod Nano/Shuffle with a touch screen and the possibility of an updated Apple TV device.

Great, Apple alienates its largest market segment: Window's users.
I want to sit back and watch this on my computer screen, not a tiny 3.5" screen.
Also, an iTunes version that doesn't run like **** on windows would be greatly appreciated.

I would love a new improved iTunes, but as it is, it works fine for me on Windows... people always bash it like it's slow and unusable.
Now granted my friends and I may be unusual but I doubt it.
If I had the money I would love to have a mac, hell I'd even buy OS X if they made a version that worked on "normal" PC's but until that day I'm stuck using Windows.

iTunes runs fine on my windows pc. Maybe you have a virus or a bunch of crapwarw installed?

True, I've never had an issue with itunes either.

Live steam of the media event might be a hint of streaming tv shows being implemented, herp derp.
Lol, funny, but could be true actually
The huge farm they bought to make servers... do you guys think it has anything to do with streaming video content?
It does seem weird alienating windows users when these are the new customers they want to be drawing in.
Try these HTTP Live Streaming samples on Chrome in Windows: http://iphone.akamai.com/
Should work fine.
Should work fine.
These also work if you have Quicktime installed on Windows and copy the URL link and open it that way.
I think the problem is down to QuickTime X still not being ported to Windows.
Surely anyone could make software that supports HTTP Live Streaming?
VLC partially supports it, as the Engadget link in the first post here proves. They simply haven't gotten complete support finished, so you have to refresh the link from time to time.
No word on iLife11?
We'll find out in a few hours.
Ohhh I'd love to see that along with iWork '11. ^^

You and me both, waiting on iWork 11 to buy.
Not that I am expecting much with this being Apple, but if I can be bothered, I could boot into Mac OS for this...
A nod towards iTunes streaming. B-)
I guess Mr Jobs will say something like "Did you enjoy streaming the show live on your Apple products, that's because of Quicktime X, now Windows users can do this next time..."
LOL yeah it's about time they release QuickTime X for Windows users. But if they did, it would mean some Windows users would have to install QuickTime 7 and X because X has less features than 7 Pro...
They need to fix QuickTime X ASAP and release it on the Windows platform.
This is the lowest score in Apple's arrogance history. Congrats!
+1
It is not arrogance. Apple is streaming the event using a new technology and they want to use this as a test bed. Also remember that Apple is building a huge Data Center in North Carolina and this might be a test to see how the servers will handle the load. They want to limit the the streaming to the Apple platform so that if something goes wrong, they dont become a laughing stock.
Suits you for running Windows!

Keep telling yourself that.
With all the crap Apple has been getting from ex-loyal customers, product issues, and bad news...this isnt going to help them. I doubt it will make that big of an impact, but every little bit adds up over time.
Why should i care for lame Apple and their overhyped products?
I'll give you a tip that will follow you all your life :
If you don't care, don't watch it!
Why did you even come here then to post that comment? Grow up.
Hey guys, anyone know where I can find a flash stream of it? [/sarcasm]
What do you think are the chances of getting the new iPod Touch for less than £200 ?
I doubt they will cost less, I suspect they will stay at the same pricepoint, thats generally how Apple does it
£179 in the uk im guessing
I still want an ipod touch. However I don't use my ipod much anymore.
I know what you mean. I got a 30gb iPod classic vid that I only use when traveling. other than that, it rots on my shelf.
Next MP3 player I get will be integrated in to my phone. I dont like carrying around two devices...why my iPod has been sitting.
twit live is also streaming it live
this is a given!
Dont really care about watching this. If needed, I will watch the event on Youtube after or read news articles that sum up the stream.
Doesnt surprise me that Apple blocked out Windows users. Nothing from Apple surprises me these days.
But yet there are work arounds that Apple didnt even bother to post or provide.

Did you even bother to READ what the "workaround" is? You have to continually reload the stream in VLC to get it to work. Not exactly the kind of user experience Apple wants to endorse. It certainly isn't Apple's fault that no third party has completely implemented the HTTP Streaming format yet.

Nope, never learned to read.
Its a work around...they tend to not function 100% most of the time. If it functioned 100%, then it would be called a solution.

always funny seeing posts from people like you on neowin who think this is your personal blogging site. this isnt twitter, we dont need updates on what you are currently doing or planning on doing.
Why the he'll would they exclude windows users? That's their biggest market! Stupid. It isn't like setting up a live video stream for all devices that support it it rocket science.
I hope we get iOS4 for the iPad
It's a no-brainer you guys should get it. It part of Jobs meant when he introduced 'iOS' meaning it would be used across all the 'iDevices'. The trick for them is to release the latest version of iOS for all devices (that use it) at the same time.
Apple Store is down as of 30 Minutes before the beginning of the talk!!
I have a mac g4 and a windows 7 machine and both dont get the stream it just says available shortly
Gizmodo is restreaming it in flash
