Apple to release iPhone Nano for Christmas?

Apple kicked off rumours of an iPhone nano a year ago in a United States Patent Application.

Despite Apple selling out of the devices in various US states on a daily basis and the recent release of the 2.0.1 firmware, to update a few performance issues, the rumour of a new iPhone Nano has ignited once again this week.

The Daily Mail in the UK has sparked rumours of a possible iPhone Nano in time for this years Christmas season. Citing industry sources the paper claims the product will be launched in the UK at up to £150 for pay-as-you-go customers by O2. This would go some way to explaining why the iPhone hasn't been released on PAYG yet and why industry experts predict it will arrive on PAYG by Christmas.

According to the paper one expert suggested the nano phone would have a touch wheel on the back and display on the front so that numbers would be dialed from behind. This backs up the images in the Apple patent but what does Neowin think, a cheap iPhone Nano for Christmas or a load of hot air?

This wouldn't surprise me, but their business model really sucks. "Release a product, give it a few weeks, then start rumours of the next version which will be here in six months". It'll probably knock the price of the current generation down again and people will have to rush to buy that one.

Huh? The iPhone is actually rather large for a phone. Now, compared to some other smartphones it is about average, although thinner than most, but I don't think anyone would call it "small".

I agreed, is slim but yet its annoying to carry on.

This does tie in with O2 listing pay as you go iphones, but no information despite the 3G being released...

Another logistical disaster? Apple has not been able to sell the actual iPhone, they better don't start another mess before they actually learn how to sell stuff.

Not been able to sell the iPhone but they've sold 1 million in 3 days? God knows how many they have sold now but once the official figures come out I am sure their market share will have increased a lot.

0 more units sold since then. That's the point. Here on the canary islands (about 1 millon population) only ~100 units were sold. A few thousands in Spain alltogether (>35 millon population). Not very different in other european countries. Ever since then, zero units have been delivered, new units are likely to come in September, maybe even later. I'm in a waiting list with more than 300 people, and that's just the list from a minor store. Sorry, but all I can repeat is... they have to learn how to actually sell stuff. Logistic is the way to go.

Had a positive side though, while waiting I found out they actually don't have 3G coverage here at all, so I'd pay for something I don't get (internet access, that is). I'll probably not buy the phone... except if they can give me a very attractive price offer.

Are you kidding? Or are you referring only to the Canary Islands?

I found out they actually don't have 3G coverage here at all, so I'd pay for something I don't get

...and you wonder why people aren't rushing to buy it on the Canary islands?

Apple has not been able to sell the actual iPhone
0 more units sold since then

From another source:

Foxconn, the Taiwanese electronics giant that produces the iPhone 3G for Apple, has ramped up production to 800,000 units per week
Apple sold just 6 million of its first generation iPhones.
...expect sales of up to 40 million units in the first year, but that those numbers are being revised upwards sharply.

No, I was referring to Spain alltogether. Forums are full of complaints. And I didn't say people on the islands don't buy them, I said there are huge waiting lists (even though 3G coverage is awful here). Yeah, I read the story about production... but I see no phones arriving here. You bet that's mostly production for the countries they are preparing release for, not to deliver to existing markets. On the other side, I've read that e.g. Germany is slowly getting new units now.

The concept in the description sounds terrible - I don't think i'd want to dial numbers where I can't actually see them appearing on the screen - sounds like a bit of a step backwards.

The price point appeals though - but i'll already hopefully have a 3G by then so wouldn't be in the market for it!

I notice in the linked article it says 'pay as you go'...I'm assuming that means prepaid? If so, this could be EXACTLY what I'm after for this Christmas :D

(btw, if there's a wheel on the back of it, what does that mean txting will be like?)
