Avast! is great for its detection rates, but I wouldn't leave it on its own. Pair it up with COMODO firewall (Also free) and it's a security suite not to be reckoned with.

Between Avira and Avast, you can't go wrong as far as an AV. Just installed this version on a nice, new, clean Windows 7 install this morning.

Software firewall's are a thing of personal preference though. Mainly for the overly paranoid or people installing things they really shouldn't be anyway.
