Before Cortana, there was Louise the personal digital assistant

Before Cortana, Microsoft was working on another personal digital assistant, Louise, who surely created the foundation for a personal digital assistant. If you want to take a look at what Cortana looked like before she become the personal digital assistant who has a love for the World Cup, take a look at the video above.

The demo is quite old but we had not seen the videos before and though you might enjoy them too, show Louise running on Windows Phone 7. It's quite easy to see the comparisons between Cortana and Louise and shows how far Microsoft has come with its digital assistant.

We would hedge that Louise may have been a name that was in the running for the Windows Phone 8.1 variant of this application but we much prefer Cortana. The videos also show how long Microsoft had been working on this technology too. It's quite clear that they didn't set out to create a Siri competitor overnight as the roots for the project are much older than most of the public knows about.

It's cool to see the foundation that eventually lead to Cortana and more so, how far along the research project has come since it was first being tested.

seriously this louise, does more than "ok, google" and siri" how come they didn't release their voice assistance first?

Sonuvabitch! They had all that since WP7 and never released?!?! WHHHHHHY!!!!

Actually, since MS knew WP7 was a dead OS walking, I understand why they didn't invest more time and money releasing something they knew was going to die.

Why the ideas of MS (infact Nokia too) stays in test bed and dies where as competition, though stumbles upon such much later, but successfully gets them out in market and makes huge profit out of it ??

Huh? This video may be called Lousie but this is exactly how Cortana works right now in WP8, been using it for months and will hit public in the next month or so. I'd hardly call that stuck in the test bed it is going live soon and works very well.

Yep. I agree. MS has had some fantastic ideas but before the public knew how cool they were I think. I don't know. But I hope it stops with the new Microsoft =).

TabletPC ? SPOT ? PocketPC ? Courier ? and about another gazillion projects slaughtered or left to bleed out ...

To be fair, we're talking about projects that MS shelved / died / botched one way or the other, that seem like they got it right (or were on the right path and needed some work) in hindsight. I'm not sure how many projects that were just DOA we've not heard about. Same thing applies to other companies.

I also know that old MS (will see how the future holds) is too top management heavy causing all sorts of issues, Microsoft Kin being a more recent example of how they kill a product by poor middle - upper level decisions with a lot of potential.
