Computer viruses as they look in 3D

Ever wondered what computer viruses might look like?

Probably not, but that hasn't stopped conceptual artist Alex Dragulescu creating a set of 3D images. He was given the programming code for the most common internet viruses and decided to make a set of pictures that he calls Infected Art. The images are divided into six main threat categories including viruses, spam, phishing attacks, spyware, malicious links and trojans.

Sounds like someone had too much time on their hands.

It's a good concept with the collecting of data and interpreting it in a visual abstract form. Not so sure I like the end product, though.

So it's not so strange to see people that STILL believed that can caught a viral infection from a computer virus. Or people that think that electronics viruses are transmitted by the power outlet (and not because they click on hideous .exe attachment in their email).

How really looks a virus :

Okay, thought Ballmer had his biggest, best speech/interview ever and something went on in the Apple camp, but okay.

does this guy actually say how he went from the code to these shapes? maybe we can understand how these viruses work if like there were movies of it... like internet explorer or something can be this innocent white blob with this hole which represents a vulnerability and we see the virus fit right through the hole etc

I'd imagine him being annoying and a real pain in the ass. Someone who likes to slow down your work... You probably have one of these in your company's IT department.

A mixture of loud howard from Dilbert and a sloth. Loud Howard because has anyone seen the ridiculously sized bar it adds to Internet Explorer? "THIS SITE'S SAFE........ NO IT'S NOT".

i expected the trojan to look like it was hiding something sinister, but it just looked like regular malware.

I'm usually pretty open-minded about art, but this looks like cheap CGI from the mid-90s. Most of it is cliche and ugly right from the get-go. The concept is somewhat interesting, though not what I'd call novel. It could have been executed in a less simplistic way.

This would have been far more interesting if the source had some information about the algorithms, otherwise it is just strange pictures.

I agree. To be fair, however, it's worth noting that the structures in the images are actually generated based upon properties of the assembly code created by compiling the algorithms used in the malware. My guess is that it's something simplistic like every time a jump-not-equal is encountered, another horn gets added, and every time a load-register is encountered after a move-to-memory, it makes the previous horn curlier.
