Cover-less 32 GB Surface sells out in UK and Canada

It looks like Microsoft didn't make enough of the regular 32 GB version of the Surface tablet to go around. Earlier this week, we reported that the $499 version of the Windows RT tablet (the one that comes without the touch cover) had already been back ordered in the US version of the Microsoft Store website less than a day after its pre-orders launched.

Now it seems that folks in Canada and the UK who didn't move fast enough are going to have to wait as well. The Canadian Microsoft Store says flat out that the 32 GB version of the Surface, priced at $519, is now "Temporarily sold out". It's the same situation for the Microsoft Store website in the UK, where the 32 GB version was selling for 399 pounds.

Microsoft has yet to comment officially on how many units of the Surface tablet is is making for this first batch but it seems clear that the 32 GB model without the touch cover is by far the one that consumers want the most. Microsoft has been making much of its Touch Cover with the included keyboard but at the moment it appears many people just want the Surface without the optional keyboard.

I actually think the online pre-order supply IS sold out, or getting there. MS has kept a % of them for it's popup and official retail stores. People can go to one of the stores and reserve one that way as well. Without knowing how many they made for this first batch then it's hard to say but honestly with people getting emails saying their orders have been delayed I doubt this is some sort of marketing BS.

I also ordered my 32Gb with cover on Tuesay. Also received an email overnight telling me my order is delayed until the 3nd of Nov.
Have to plan to do something else next weekend

Ordered my Surface (32 with touchcover) before 5pm Tuesday, and was originally given a delivery date of 26 October - had an email overnight saying it has been delayed until 2 November.

I see Microsoft has learnt the same marketing scheme as Apple. Making a hand full of devices then pronouncing that there SOLD OUT due to high demand.. Won't be long until apple sue's Microsoft Lol!

An Apple product sells out, and it is a HUGE SUCCESS.

A Microsoft product sells out, and instead of calling it a successful product launch, everyone instead says Microsoft didn't make enough of them.

Wow, Really?

depends who you ask/who is commenting

While at work today, I looked on ebay just cuz i know most of those sellers are thieves. Well, I wasn't disappointed to find the 32gb w/o cover was going for around $749. I even found few that had around 10 bids+ and were currently at $519 with 7 days to go. Made me think may be I can use another CC and just buy one and make some change off it.

The Surface sale model is very bizzare. Why not only list the two (2) models (32GB and 64GB) and let people choose what color touch cover they want -- since it is already included in the 499 price.

I suspect someone at MS realized that they can make more money with this bizzare model. As the result shows, MOST people are buying the 499 model and paying an extra 20 (stand alone price 119) for the touch cover color of their choice.

Because having to manufacture and stock multiple SKUs of each model with each colour of touch cover included in the box would be an administrative nightmare. Assuming 5 colours and two memory sizes, that's 12 individual tablet products they'd have to package up and stock rather than the 3 they have now.

I do however strongly object to the fact that it costs you £20 more if you want a different colour of touch cover with your surface. The one without the keyboard should cost the same as the the one with the keyboard minus the cost of the keyboard.

How about not including any cover in any box and just putting both boxes (tablet and cover) in the same brown box and shipping that to the buyer? You know, how everyone else does it?

Means very little until numbers are released

you could say the same thing about all products in the past that have been back-ordered or temporarily sold out.

Except that it's happened twice now, with the WP7 and Lumia launches. It's becoming standard fare for Microsoft to restrict supply and for the media to assume high demand.

Odd, didn't know Microsoft made a WP7 device and the Lumia for that matter.........

I ordered one in the US and only got the Cyan touch cover. The colors are more popular than MS thought it seems. I've read many posts that state they are getting the Cyan also.

In the UK you can only choose the default Black or the optional White - no other colours are listed. Not that it matters, as the Surface RT is far too expensive for what it is.

for the first day or so red and cyan were available too

Anyone want to buy a Cyan 32 GB?

There's no such thing as a Cyan 32GB. 32GB refers to the Surface which is unicolour. Only the touch cover is Cyan, and that's a separate item.

The reason I pre-ordered w/o the keyboard, because my friend at BestBuy can get it for me cheaper with his employee discount. Also because I want the cyan touch cover.

Or MS really want people to buy the covers.
I'm curious to see if the cover comes inside the box, all the way from manufacturing. Given the number of cover colours, I doubt this is the best way from a logistics perspective - but definitely gives a more "premium" packaging.

You are right. At the moment both the people who want a Surface with no cover and people who want a Surface with a custom colored cover buy the same product.

Your final paragraph makes no sense because if you'd checked you'd have seen that the cyan touch cover has also sold out in the UK. It's pretty clear that most people are choosing to buy a Surface without a cover and then picking up a coloured cover rather than opting for the default black one.

Actually, now you'll find that ALL the touch covers with the exception of white now seem to be sold out. Therefore I agree with you that the article saying people don't want a cover is false, but hey it's Mr Callaham after all

I preordered one with the touch cover included (So I'm getting black)

I'm hoping that there's an accessory sale at some point, and at that point I'll pick up a cyan cover as well
