Dell is working on a Windows 8 tablet for Q1 2012

Dell has had quite a leak occur today that is showing off a few of their upcoming mobile products. While several new phones and tablets were shown off, the biggest piece of bait is that they are working on a Windows 8 tablet called Peju.

While details of the tablet are not known, what is known is that it is expected to land in Q1 of 2012. If the tablet is supposed to launch then, it is easy to assume that Windows 8 will have been released for public consumption at that point. But this date does not tie very closely to other dates that had been leaked, so that Q1 2012 launch window for Windows 8 may be a bit premature.

The slide, shown above comes courtesy of Android Central and shows off several other devices running the Android platform. These tablets are expected to ship in 2011 before the Windows 8 based device will hit the retail market.

If you're looking forward to Windows 8, the evidence pointing towards a 2012 launch appears to be getting stronger. While this timeframe is still far off, Dell would be in a position to know when to expect the product from Microsoft.

I wonder if it will work in Microsofts favor or not.. now they will not look like douches releasing a new windows every 18 months and charging like 150 bucks for it.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm!, verrrrrrrrrrry interestinnnnnnnnnnng. . .2012 you say for Windows 8 and the new Dell tablet. Please do not hold your breath it could cause you some major discomfort.

I for one think Windows 8 will be a flop... But I could be wrong

As long as they don't break everything, probably not.

I think it will be a success, but I too could be wrong.

Why? Just a feeling or you have some theory about it?

A Q1 2012 release for Windows 8 actually makes sense (more so than Q1 2013, that was rumored earlier). I mean, development is already at Milestone 2, and Milestone 3 is expected to begin in early March. That would mean Beta 1 in June-July, Beta 2 in September, RC in November and RTM in January/February.

It might make sense if it were a simple update to Windows 7. However, once again, there's rumours swirling about a new interface, etc. Plus, if they're optimizing it for tablets, I imagine Q1'12 is a bit too soon.

Microsoft has said they're going to stick to a two year release cycle though. They've said they're not going to do major releases anymore, because of what happened to Vista. It's a tight schedule, I give you that. But I imagine Microsoft wants to get a good tablet OS out as soon as possible.

They are simple updates now, they dropped the whole minor and major bit, they'll ship it every 2 years with whatever features and changes are done and working, whatever doesn't make it in by the RC timeframe is left for the next version or maybe a SP1 (look at the new stuff SP1 adds to Server 2k8 for example).

They already have WIn8 running on ARM cpus, they showed us as much back in January, so they've been working on this move since Win7 finished. Once again MS will do to tablets with Win8 what it did to netbooks with Win7. It was only a matter of time.

Looks like first early mockups of Windows Whistler (XP). History repeats itself.

What do you mean? There is nothing to see, how could it look like the early mockups of Whistler? Unless you're referring to those Android tablets.

Very interesting code name for the Windows 8 tablet " peju " ... The person that came up with
that name might like their wine .. Peju winery has some fine wines. I prefer the Provence
and Cabernet Franc myself. They also, have some nice white wines too.

That 8 doesn't look like an 8 to me. Looks more like a 0. It's the font. They're probably hoping for a change and can't predict what's coming that late or don't want to speculate that far ahead so they're just putting Windows 0. You can also compare it to the zero in the 760 from the resolution.

It appears as though I just can't see properly by the looks of it. After a few seconds of research the resolution is 1366x768 so if that's an eight than the other one has to be one too making both my post and this reply useless. Yay me! I get to screw up for everyone lol. But it does look like a 0 to me still

Hoy ssshhh! Windows 0!

It's probably correct, Dell released other Road Maps which leaked the Q which Android Ice Cream will be released on their products. Seems they don't give a crap about keeping things hush hush

Yeah, interesting because much change will be needed from Win7 as far as tablets go. Size, activex/cloud/Office 360. MS needs to get their proprietary foot in the door quickly before its too late.

As Mary Jo Foley said, it is possible that the tablet form of Windows 8 is going faster than the desktop form

I may be wrong, but didn't they announce that the core of the OS would be the same, would support multiple processor types - so how could it differ in production apart from maybe the UI part - which is probably being worked on now anyway?
