Today is the day that Microsoft finally showed off to the World what it has planned for Windows 8. If you avoided all the leaked builds in anticipation for an official release, your wait is almost over.

Microsoft has announced that starting tonight, everyone will be able to download the official developers preview from Microsoft. The download will be live tonight at 8PM PDT and will come in 32bit and 64bit versions. You can also get the build with or without developers tools according to the building Windows 8 blog.

Mine worked fine. Didn't need to activate it. Spent a long time installing all the applications. BTW Has anyone worked out how to close an app?

Just found Avermedia Media Center to replace Windows Media Center - now I've got TV!

Mine worked fine on clean install and it activated once online. Are you trying to do an upgrade?

Can you skip that part and wait till you get to the desktop and then just activate?

I saw the optional upgrade but I have always gone with the fresh install. Hope that works out for ya.

Hey thanks Neowin for bringing this info to us. I pleasantly installed this edition of windows 8 and I am really loving the direction. I'm having a little tad bit of getting adjusted to metro but I seem to like it more and more every time I boot up. Thanks.

I really do not like the Metro Interface. If there is a way to disable it and only use the normal desktop could someone please tell me how? Thanks.

The only thing I don't like is the scrolling on the start screen, why didn't they make it more like the zune software so the screen pans across with the mouse?

Currently downloading WindowsDeveloperPreview-64bit-English.iso at 277 KB/sec.

Worth the wait?

Chargleberry Sauce! Time for me to get in on the action. I'm more curious about silly things like the tiles. Can one create a tile for a website? Perhaps feature a live feed on it? Featured content? Auto update the tile?

I imagine various APIs and developer tools will be available for web developers to take advantage of the tiles when you pin their sites.

what about Win 8 Server?

There's no such thing as Windows 8 Server. Windows 8 is a desktop OS. It has nothing to do with any server variant that is being worked on.

Do like I'm planning and just wait til tomorrow morning. You'll probably be waiting that long for it to download anyway if you try to get it when it is first released.

4AM for us brits?! Ahhhh Microsoft why do you do this to me! :'(

Because M$ is headquartered in Silicon Valley.

Anyone knows how is it going to update itself? I mean, If I install this build, what will happen when the next build will be out?

Will it update itself via Windows Update or I've to re-install again the newer version from scracth?

Being a test version, I don't suspect upgrading over the top of existing was something they pursued. I could be wrong, but I forsee a reimage in your future.

As with every single other recent pre-release of a Windows Product, there will not be a direct official upgrade path from one beta build to another, and certainly not from a pre-beta "preview" build.

Remember this build is for developers to develop and test apps on, it is not for consumers. Hence the reasons it's called a "Developer Preview" build.

The preview build does not include every feature shown this morning. Shown but not in the Developer Preview release include the Windows Store, Windows Live Metro style apps, and some of the user interface features. The focus of the preview is the API and development tools for building Metro style apps.

My excitement level for today just went from about a 20 out of 100 up to about 95. I was just coming down from the joy of the midnight release of NHL12 I just recovered from. I can't wait for this.

Am I right in thinking it'll be 11pm for the UK?

It was in the announcement that it would be 3am GMT (4am UK time), so no... it won't be available at 11pm.

Awesome. It will still be live tomorrow, right? Being on the East Coast, I can't be up that late to do the download... And it would be faster on my work connection anyway...

So this should run fine on an Atom Processor? I don't want to dedicate my personal computer to a preview release. Maybe if it was a release candidate I would. So for now, I'd rather test it on my netbook.

Yup, they showed an Atom based device running Win 8, and older netbook with 1GB. They also showed the memory footprint, very small. Even gives alternatives a good run for the money.

does anyone know if you can turn off metro on the desktop version?

Watch the keynote video, they've already shown that the old style desktop isn't going anywhere.

thanks all, i was just curious.

I love how people are crying to be able to turn things off, when they haven't tried, or even seen these features for themselves yet. It's quite amusing....

preview means something other than beta?

Yeah, beta has more QA and crazy branching bureaucratic process and usually has a feature freeze.

look at IE10 preview... thats your answer. of course this developer preview is more complete than IE10(since it doesn't have UI) but it means it isnt finished at all, still they will change alot of stuff in UI and alot of features and that stuff, they dont need feedback from people saying how stuff is working, they want developers to test and build for windows 8

SHoTTa35 said,
Nope not yet. It's public but it's not a "Public Beta" in the normal sense of the word.

it must be a beta if there releasing it to the public to beta test.

It's actually a M3 build, they are generally releasing it for other developers who couldn't make it the show now can still get it and test it.

xbamaris said,
Will this include the server version aswell?

Why would it? This is all about Windows 8... Windows 8 is a desktop OS.

I hope task manager has the ability to show gpu usage and gpu ram usage, that would be very cool.

Well I've got 2 Mb/s. Beat that. XD

Hehe, sucks for you guys - apparently we are being upgraded to 60Mbps now also for free again (30 - 50 and now 60Mbps!)

They were shamed in the SamsKnows/FCC testing so they've overprovisioned the modems so when it "slows down" we do get our regular speeds.

Oh, I've seen Microsoft's servers brought to their knees by previous beta releases, so I'm not getting my hopes up for a speedy download.

No joke, I suspect I'll be waiting for a torrent for this one. Going to be a bajillion people trying to snag it at once.

Unless it is just typical afternoon congestion, Microsoft's servers are already getting hammered. I'm trying to download something from Technet right now and it is going slow as hell.

You Wish. I have been a Microsoft Tech Net Subscriber 4 a while now and they have a Server Side Speed Limit that they turn on the moment that their Servers start getting Hammered!
