Exclusive: Microsoft set to launch Windows Phone 7 devices on October 21

Microsoft will launch a wide range of Windows Phone 7 devices on October 21, Neowin has learnt.

According to sources familiar with the software giants plans, Microsoft will hold several launch events worldwide on October 21 to introduce its latest Windows Phone 7 handsets. Microsoft is planning to hold an open house event in New York City on October 11 where it plans to show off some of the new devices. Devices will hit retail shelves on October 21 in the UK, France, Germany Italy and Spain. Neowin is unable to verify whether devices will be available in the United States on October 21.

Microsoft is planning to partner with a big London based radio station in the UK to promote Windows Phone 7. Orange, a long time Windows Mobile partner of Microsoft's, is also expected to be a close launch partner for Windows Phone 7. If you thought you'd heard a lot about Windows Phone 7 recently then prepare to be bombarded with a major advertising blitz from Microsoft shortly. The Redmond based company is planning to go all out on Windows Phone 7 marketing.

Microsoft recently released the final build of Windows Phone 7 to manufacturing and claimed the company is "ready". Terry Myerson, Microsoft's Corporate Vice President of Windows Phone engineering said the company is just getting started. "This has been one of the most incredible product development efforts I’ve ever been a part of" said Myerson. Microsoft workers celebrated the RTM news with an iPhone and BlackBerry funeral at the Microsoft Campus in Redmond.

The software giant also demonstrated its support for Twitter and YouTube on Windows Phone 7, features that were absent in preview versions of the OS. Microsoft also announced that Zune services are going international for Windows Phone 7 launch.

The biggest downside I noticed in the past with Windows Mobile, was it was slow. My last phone I had running Windows Mobile 6.5, the HTC Touchpro2 was a phone I really wanted to keep. The CPu @ 528Mhz was simply to slow for the OS. But I loved the features and would still have it if it was fast.

MSFT has made a few restrictions that insure every phone released now will be good. They all will have capacitive touch, they all will have the same 3 buttons, they all will use faster hardware and have equal capabilities. The software designed will work on ANY model. Slight changes if they have a physical keyboard. Al i hope is MSFT improved the on-screen keyboard. I love using my voice for doing emails and text. I could care less about copy/paste. I don't use it that often. I need to have it on iphone because the dumbass phone is horrble to use without it.

I will get a phone as soon as either ATT gets one worth buying, or I will add my 3rd line back to my VZW account.

And i am hoping sprint gets a good one too. After getting the EVo 4G, Sprint can't affrod to get a ugly WM7. They need to get an equal one of better. Sprint has been out the loop mostly because they get horrble handsets. Leave that for US cellular.

I am betting on HTC to pull out something great for all 4 major US carriers.

Was out at the weekend with a friend who works for a UK network operator who confirmed 21st Oct for release date. Also had a hands on with a awesome Samsung device (not the developer preview device) it was really fast and smooth and friend said about a day and a half of battery time. I cant wait for these devices to become available!

I have Verizon (CDMA) so won't be able to get this phone right away but I think it'll do really well since the developer tools should be great. Might have to get one though to play around with if they don't get CDMA support quick enough.

soooo pumped.. I am going crazy because everyone around me has Iphones and show them off everytime their is a family or friend event.. I need something to show off!!

sheesh, the data-mining google disciples seem to have their panties in a bunch. You should welcome the competition. Nice to have something different from the Droid/iOS trunk.

I can't wait to see what WP7 phones Sprint comes up with, been waiting for months to upgrade my phone.

How is this exclusive? It's been known for x months

No it hasn't. Although we knew that WP7 would be released in October it wasn't clear when. There was speculation about the 11th but nothing has been confirmed yet.

Even though Microsoft has been in market for years, this is a 1st Gen Microsoft phone. They still have a lot of catchup to do, but they are on the right path. There is definitely room in market for this phone. If they play there cards right they can be a solid #3 or #2 smart phone. I want to see how fast they iterate before I make a real judgement. They need to have better features to really compete... They need HTML5 copy & paste , multitasking etc. I do think Blackberry and Nokia are not in as good position as microsoft even both companies have very large market share. I do see Apple and Android dominating for the short term but Microsoft should make some inroads.

day2die said,
Considering that the whole WP7 OS was build in less than 2 years, Microsoft would be able to move fast.
Microsoft can do a lot in a small amount of time, they just need a reason to do so... That reason is competition.

After all, look at IE9. IE8 was still a complete and utter fail at standards, and now look at IE9. They are now (or will be) an actual competitor in the browser market with a good browser, not a bad browser that comes with Windows which therefore gets used a lot.

Now look at WP7... Once again, this was due to competition. Don't ya love it!

I really hope they come out with some higher end devices with more storage. Right now all but one of the leaked WP7 devices has 8GB of storage, not enough for me and my media needs. LG has one with 16GB and that's as low as I'd go.

Need some 32GB phones please! Come on LG, HTC, Samsung, or whoever! I have money ready and waiting, I know you guys want it!

Too complicated to fully understand the devices functionality. Easier just to go 8gb...gtfo

why do people need so much storage for.. i used to have a 16gb iphone and never used more than 3 or 4gb of that..

8 is fine

Suave Sagittarian said,

It actually does, but once the card is removed, the phone will have to do a "reset" which delete all personal data and bring the phone back to factory default.

Suave Sagittarian said,

THE phone? It's not an iPhone we are talking about, the Dell Lightning for example will feature an MicroSD card slot and I'm sure that there will be other devices with the same functionality.
As with some of the newer smartphones though, I bet the MicroSD cards wont be hot-swappable and will require you to remove the battery to switch cards.

And I had an 8GB Nokia 3 years ago and it was always full.

Nobody's saying that there shouldn't be phones with 8GB for users that don't need to store anything, but OEMs like HTC need to offer different versions of their phones with higher capacity memory cards for those users who do need more space. Choice is a good thing and space is required to take advantage of things like the Zune marketplace.

Exactly! I don't know about others but for example I have around 180-200GB of music alone plus all the videos that add up to what's probably 1.5TB, I'd like to have enough storage to, for example, load up a good number of episode from a TV series for the road and not have to contimplate something else I'd have to remove in order to make space.

For me personaliy the more space the better, but I'm probably in the minority, still, I'm willing to pay the extra $50 or w/e it'd cost HTC, LG or whoever to add more storage into a phone.

Did you read above? It's swappable. It just that if the if the card is removed, the WP7 OS will have to do a "reset" which delete all data and bing the phone back to factory default.

Actually I read the MS specs and the SD card is supposed to be unaccessible by users. Not that even with the scenario you mentioned it would be very useful. I will stick with my HD 2 thanks.

I don't like the advert above with the 4 icons, reminds me too much of the old playstation advert, MS need to be original

That's just something we put together

No Microsoft is so bold and genius with this phone its simplistic and just there, its a new breeze rolling in, everything on the phone works together for more efficiency and productivity for people to get things done faster, I don't have a data plan, with my current phone 5800XM and would need a data plan to really get the experience of the phone. But i guess i gotta buy it unlocked or go with a plan and any word on Canadian carriers getting WP7.

Videos just don't do the OS justice. I've seen on it dev devices multiple times and am blown away by how smooth the UI is. Can't even begin to imagine what the retail devices will be like!

Bogged down with crapware and slow as heck. That is usually what happens.

Nope. Carriers and OEMs are not allowed to bog down the phones with crapware. All they can do it preload it with a couple apps.

Anyone looking for a barely used iPhone 4?

I personally have 3 lines on my Verizon account. I dropped one and went and got the ill-fated iphone 4. ATT has a habit of getting horrible models of phones that run Windows. I too will be selling my Iphone 4 if ATT can get a respectable model of a Windows Mobile device. I prefer Windows Mobile. I have own 6 phones that run the OS. I would have kept the HTC TouchPro2 is the OS didn't make the phone so slow.

I eeven will take Windows Mobile 6.5 over iOS. iOS sucks and I have an iphone 4G. Not everyone drinks the koolaid bec they own an Apple device. Anyone who says iphone is just the best right now is just stupid. Android is what the iOS could be if Steve Jobs was smart and not stupid. Obviously he has learn nothing from the failure of the Mac platform.

I am waiting to dump my iPhone 4 as as possible. I am banking on verizon getting a great model of WM7. Even if it means taking the AMEX and paying ATT off, I will do so. Its only money. I rather have what I like, then to keep paying for garbage. I waited 3 years of wanting an iphone to finally get one and hate it. It si perfect as an ipod Touch which I already had. I bought the phone because the 4G seemed betetr than the one I wanted which was the 3Gs. Now that I have an Iphone, the phone sucks. I got tired of carry 2 devices, namely my HTC Incredible and my Touch. So I bought the phone. I NEVER EVER make the same mistake twice. I will never buy another iphone for as long as I live. I wil be happy to go back to Windows or just keep my Android phone. I will never buy another Apple product until the strings are no longer atatched. And that sin't going to happen until Jobs is gone.

some people are jst stupid and have no forward looking insite from past experiences.....its people like those who don't learn. I guess the xbox was too late as sony and nintendo had control of the market, I guess internet explorer were too late as netscape had the market already, I guess the iphone and android were too late as nokia had the market already. I don't think I need to say much more.

I for one welcome the new way of doing things with Windows Phone 7, I respect the UI and it's not like tethering or C&P will never come to the platform, just needs a fast app switcher

There's one thing I realized about metro, is that some people love it and some people hate, others just can't make up their mind, but I bet if they had the chance to play with one, there'd be no other mobile OS better in the world to them. but those who love it will buy it, those who don't will not, those who can't make up their minds will try it out and most will end up getting it...it's that simple, it's not rocket science.

those who say the platform = fail...actually = fail themselves, acting as if they know what the majority of people will choose. jeez, grow up mentally even a little, it's better for you to do so

Thank you for sharing that, I'm glad someone is thinking outside the box instead of the fanboys who worship their Android/iPhone/etc devices and all have the same response...

day2die said,
As somebody who is lucky enought to have a hand-on, I can say that I love the Metro interface.
I only have experience with the Metro UI on the Zune, and I know the one on WP7 is more advanced, but from my Zune HD experiences, I love it, and I will love it more on WP7 because of the extra capabilities

Exactly, you share my same sentiments exactly.

I chose the Zune HD over the iPod Touch for a reason.

late in the game yes, if they were going with a standard grid UI. I think changing things up with a new UI won't turn out bad

Let me guess an Android user LOL

very angry people,

I myself can't wait for this phone, I do not beleave its a FAIL, at all xbox intergration is awsome and the phones UI is I would say the best out there, I hate sence UI very buggy..

Atleast they have taken their own path with the GUI, Android follows the iOS concept closely, a 3rd party to push competition is to be appreciated.

day2die said,

Of course, there is no sense in bashing something that will be a failure anyways, as it will take it's natural course. But when there is a product that is actually DIFFERENT, and much BETTER, and will become much BETTER, and will undoubtedly get thousands of apps (after all, it is Silverlight and C# and soon VB, and there are a lot more people who program in that than any other...) in no time, people will try to spread lies to make others believe it.

But since there are a lot of people who know the truth, they are right there to debunk said claims ;-)

Sense UI is made by HTC not android. It is a custom shell on top of android. Every manufacturer of android has a choice of what UI they want to use either custom os stock AOSP. Do some research before bashing android.

The point is that he hates all the custom UI that OEMs pre-loaded on Android.

tethering is in windows mobile for free, no need to root or unluck a device. I'm sorry for those who have to go through all that and risk losing their divice's warranty especually when they're brains are not Tech Enabled.

Absolutely... I can see his argument fast going to "It's name is not iWP7! = FAIL!" But it's good to see how quick people know whether something is going to work or not. Based on......... ?

For me I would do it to remove the crapware placed on my phone. Not to tether for free. I honestly don't care or have an issue with it.

Well the list of the new OS shortcomings is quite long so......

Windows Phone DOES have tethering, it is just dependent on the Carrier to enable or disable it. With that said, I wouldn't expect many phones to ship with this enabled given the carriers usually like to charge you extra for that or sell you a separate dongle... But the OS DOES have this feature built in. It's a shame really, because I would use this if I could, but I refuse to pay the carriers for something that (At best) should only use the bandwidth already available to me with a data plan anyway...

smooth3006 said,

Late?! Really? any proof of that. Its the guys who enter later who take over. Or maybe you dont watch the market. Here are some examples -

Apple, first with a consumer desktop computer, Microsoft was a late comer, they past Apple in 5 years. Nintendo and Sega came after names like Atari and killed them with Nintendo being the only player left. Sony came after Nintendo and even unseated them for a short spell. Apple took over Sony's lead in the portable player market. Once that Sony owned for more than a decade. Microsoft releae Xbox and is beating Sony right now and is taking over nintemdo's slack with the Wii.

Apple blind side Motorola with the original iphone. RIM blind sided Microsoft on the Enterprise level and on the consumer level. Android came out only 2 years ago and it is already more popular than iphone and is heading to unseat RIM as well. Something Apple NEVER did.

Grow up. if you don't want a Windows Phone don't buy it. No market is ever to small for a company to come from behind and win. To say so is just udder ignorance on YOUR part.
