Facebook adds way to "Find Friends Nearby"

Facebook has a tendency to add features to their social networking service without giving anyone outside the company much of a heads-up. The company did that recently with the introduction of editing comments in status reports. Now, TechCrunch reports that Facebook has added yet another option to the mix.

This new feature allows people to find their Facebook friends, or any possible future friends, if they happen to be nearly their location. The feature was originally named Friendshake but it is now called simply Find Friends Nearby. The feature can be checked out on the Facebook web page. It can also be accessed for the iOS and Android mobile apps.

The engineer at Facebook who helped to create the new feature, Ryan Patterson, stated on TechCrunch's forums:

For me, the ideal use case for this product is the one where when you’re out with a group of people whom you’ve recently met and want to stay in contact with. Facebook search might be effective, or sharing your vanity addresses or business cards, but this tool provides a really easy way to exchange contact information with multiple people with minimal friction.

Users have to go to the Find Friends Nearby URL in order to activate and use the service. Their friends or possible friends have to be using it as well.

I hope I'm not the only one experiencing this but I have the developer license with Facebook that was free and I just noticed that under App on the left side of the screen. They added Facebook camera, Facebook Messenger for Android and Facebook Messenger for iPhone. If you select the option to remove it. It takes it away but as soon as you log back in. It's back. Any feedback for folks experiencing this? I'm tempted to setup another profile under another name, just to see if I'm the only one effected. FYI, no other apps are authorized under this account.

Nope, saw this yesterday toO! I was like WTF, i've never used iPhone app with my account so I was kinda wondering if I got hacked somehow!

I created another account. It was gone but as soon as I logged out and back in, it reappeared. I don't like it. You select to remove it and it reappears.

Sometimes, the things they accomplish and the concepts they implement impress me. Other times, I want to scream at how bad their QA process can be. Their coding is not... optimal.

I actually just checked this out, looks pretty cool for the stalkers in all of us. See a hot chick at the bar playing on her phone, hop on and you might get to find out her name and have a better pick up line than, "Hey nice legs, when do they open?"

This is a bit creepy really, I don't want randoms hitting me up

Agreed. I have enough strangers sending me friend requests...

Hehe, well guess if you are on that page and searching around and other people going to the same page will see you but I guess if some random dude decide to add you as a friend there you'd not know it was from there (and would still be a creep anyways for adding random people). If it was from a girl I guess, they maybe she's flirting and wants to say hello

To those who deem this creepy or a privacy concern, it's important to note that one only shows up in others' Find Friends Nearby if one is currently on that page or section of the app. The feature doesn't just tell people you're nearby without you currently being on that page. This is going to be a very useful feature for many. I met a girl on a train a few weeks ago and when it came to us adding each other to Facebook, I had to spell my name out to her and show her which one was my profile, from the list of results; this feature removes all of that hassle.

Kind of like putting your social security number on a billboard is a bad idea... there is no reason to get mad at billboard companies for selling billboard space... don't use the service.

what train was this?

thanks for clearing it up Calum

This is more of a feature for businesses and promoting local shops than it ever will be for "friends." Back in the early days of MySpace we used local searches to find people to add to local business sites and help promote them. I'm sure businesses wanted a similar feature on FB for just the same thing. Do a local search, send out tons of requests for messages and voila you now have a nice marketing tool.

I can't get damn facebook off my phone without rooting my phone and it ****es me off.

but you can bet pedo's are all excited about finding "younger friends" bad feature IMO

im not sure if im doing something wrong, but when i click the page i get a message saying

"People who appear above are nearby and have this page open.

To add a friend who's not on the list, ask them to open this page:

fb.com/ffn

They should appear on the list shortly."

and a loading wheel that ever does load; i noticed it said you have to sign up for this but i was never prompted .. am i missing something?

edit: im not sure if this has anything to do with it, but when i go to fb.com/ffn it redirects to a mobile version (beginning with the m. address) when im on my macbook using firefox .. whatever

well that's because you can only use this on mobile site. Who's gonna whip out their Macbook at the club to look up some girl's name you just yet

And the other part is that it will be blank until other people show up in there that are near you. This is why it's so hard to be creepy with it too, since both of you have to be in there then once you find each other just close that page and you aren't shown there anymore.
