Facebook to launch Timeline for all users in next few weeks

If you are a Facebook user, and chances are -you are one, and you have yet to see the new Timeline profile replace the old profile on your page, it shouldn't be long before you will have to deal with it, like it or not.

The company announced on its official blog page today that Timeline will soon become the mandatory profile page for all Facebook users worldwide "over the next few weeks."

Timeline was first announced in September and went live in December, but the new profile didn't go live everywhere at once at that time. That will be changing very soon, apparently. As we have reported before, Facebook will allow its users to preview their Timeline page privately for seven days before it becomes the permanent profile page for your account.

The main page of your Timeline profile makes your messages look more like a chronological tree of events and messages, with special emphasis given to major events in a person's life such as a wedding, a new job and more. Some users of Facebook, as one might expect, have expressed their preferrence for the old profile page design. However, it looks like this Facebook change is sticking around.

What I dont like about Timeline is privacy: Some things have changed and things that were private before, arent any more.....

If Im mistaken, please say so.

Thumbnail of friends you have.
Thumbnail of pictures.
Thumbnail of likes.
Thumbnail of maps....

Forced on us just because Facebook constantly likes changing the user interface. I tried to "Like" the timeline really but I found it entirely disorganized, in your face and the page's responsiveness is like a million Javascripts running on it. Some reason at least to drive myself away from FB.

it would have been nice of fagbook to ask if I wanted timeline or not and the choice of either instead of just foisting it on me as I actually don't like it after trialling it for a month I have come to the conclusion that it's **** and I don't want it

It's funny how we're on a tech site, where we encounter changes in hardware and software every year. Yet when Facebook changes its layout you all start whining like a bunch of kids.
Serious amounts of manning up required here.

Not that I don't like change but people left myspace because it became too cluttered, facebook was clean and simple not they've gone and screwed with the formula for revenue and mass appeal. It happens to every social site, neat and functional then as it gains popularity, the moneymakers get their paws on it then it goes downhill. Sigh.

Absolutely agreed. The new Timeline is very cluttered and counter intuitive.

Mine too. Honestly though, there are some sites and companies that really nail their updates... Facebook ain't one of them... :-\

WHY MUST I ZIGZAG ACROSS THE PAGE TO READ
WHY CAN'T I SIMPLY READ DOWN THE PAGE
WHYYYY

What is this zigzagging across the page malarkey I keep seeing people complain about? Either you have a really really low screen resolution or your browser sucks. I can scroll down down down as its always been.

In the olden days when we used to read books, our eyes used to zigzag down the page from line to line. In fact, this skill has mostly carried over to reading text on the Internet. What's up?

In the olden days people used to read one line then the next, but only one page at a time. Given the spacing that Facebook has created (like the example above) it seems like they want you to read the start of page 1, then flip to the start of page 2, then flip back to page 1 for the 2nd paragraph, etc.

Ahh, never knew what this big "zig zag" is all about. I read them straight down however I guess you can just "Highlight" everything LOL and that'll put them fully across the width of the page.

Also, if someone comments on one of the posts or clicks Like, it can adjust the arrangement (meaning that post on the left is now on the right). This can be rather annoying if you're trying to look for something specific that so-n-so posted...

Also, pictures and videos can cause it to go left left right left right right left left. That's the problem with the "zigzag" as it's inconsistent, not just left to right...

nothings private anymore on FB. i barely use FB or Google+ to care anyway

problem with this Timeline, when an old friend has deleted you a year ago. you can still track that use by going into the Timeline.

Same sob story from all the users over and over, "I hate the timeline" , "It sucks!" bla bla bla. You guys have said it about the Youtube page, the Old (but still new-ish Facebook profile page) and just about everything that requires change.

I give it two weeks after Timeline rolls out you will love it, then when a new update comes I can see, "I want to stay with timeline! :'("

Just deal with it. The majority of people enjoy it, thus the reason why they are rolling it out. Oh, and a lot of people complained about the Facebook Ticker, now a lot of people could not deal with out it so it seems.

and again, they really like to change and screw everything up for the users... every single facebook change its gone for worse...

Absolutely brilliant. I opted in as soon as I got the option.

It's very simple to use (just click on the year, then on the month, to get posts from a specific time!), it's easy on the eyes, and the cover is awesome.

A bit of advice to those who DON'T like the timeline, but choose to keep using facebook (such as myself)... I just can't bring myself to stop using it hehehe.....

Switch to timeline NOW and change all things you want private... to be private!! If you switch now, it gives you a few days to fix your things before going live. If you wait until this automatic switch, it won't give you time time change things to private.

I know I know, that doesn't change the fact that the layout is horrendous (looks like what the CIA sees on their people's database... literally!) But at least there's time to prepare Good luck to ya folks! Happy booking!

It will give them time. Facebook are giving everyone seven days before their Timeline is automatically published. Please don't communicate false information. It is important you check that what you're posting is true, before you post it

It is ugly as sin... I can agree with you there for sure.

The only thing I hate about Timeline is the news feed that goes back and forth left right right left left right left left right right... Why can't I just go straight down the list of what's going on?

If there's a way to change this setting, please let me know.

Placing the stories in two columns makes the Timeline easier to understand, and it allows us to consume the information in an easier and quicker way. Why don't you like how the Timeline utilises two columns? I realise the same post can appear on different sides, but I haven't ever found it hard to understand the order of the posts because they're dated.

To answer your question, it is not possible to change Timeline to only show posts in one column, but Facebook did state at their recent announcement that application activity will start to show in the right column only; it wasn't clear whether they meant they would be changing the layout to only show application activity in the right column, and not show posts there, but the way they phrased it indicated that this could be the case (I don't think they will, though).

Because when I'm looking for something, instead of going straight down (or left to right even), it can move and change around. Just now for instance, I was checking out a friend's page who has Timeline, and because of a comment or like changing the spacing, it threw the post I was reading to the right, and changed the order up a bit...

If they change it to how you're saying with the right column, then that might be something I find more acceptable. We'll see how it turns out though, and for now, I guess I'll try to get on board with it for now, considering it looks like we won't have much of a choice here soon enough anyhow.

I thought it's rolled out for everyone back in December, just found out from the article that apparently it's not

No. People were allowed to opt in since the middle of December, and the banner informing them they could opt in was rolling out. But it's only now that Facebook are automatically changing people's Profiles to Timelines (giving each of them seven days before theirs is published)

How long do you expect them to allow you to opt out for? They've allowed you to not opt in since the middle of December.

It doesn't really change anything. The news feed is exactly the same, which is were everyone spends their time anyway. That and the chat.

Uhm no, the news feed seems a bit "hightlight" filtered and less about chronological accurateness in the recent past.
(At least on my end, maybe it's a bug?)
Also you need to scroll a lot more to get to more timeline juice, before you had those vertical panes, that worked quite well!
I'd also like more general info to be displayed on top of the page.
Stuff that's always current.

What I REALLY like about the new design is the cover photo idea! Excellent!

Make sure you're on "recent posts". I'd also check your "subscriptions" (on your friends profiles or your friend lists), as there is a setting to only show certain types of updates and with certain frequencies.

The home feed (with all the correct settings for friends and friend lists) shows absolutely everything in chronological order and without missing anything.

This might be confusing at first, but I'm really glad they have made each aspect fully configurable.

That is true, but I really only meant MY own timeline for an example

The home feed is cool with me, nothing changed apart from that "Hightlighted First" sucker still being default view on EVERY FLIPPING log in!

I just want to globally disable it ONCE and for all.

I dislike "Hightlighted First" with a passion, it's silly, random and not even chronological AFTER shifting the "unimportant" stuff away!
Also, when catching up with my friends' statuses I either go all the way back and at least skim (I trust myself more than a machine here) or I go all the way through reading everything...

Only bit for me either...
I like the idea of presenting your life, too, but the layout is horrible and I think the recent stuff should be more in the focus like it used to be...
You don't constantly check a dude's birthplace and all that.
Now his recent activity and statuses, that you might happen to check every now and then, as it changes.

Facebook is doing so many dumb stunts it's beyond belief.

I actually prefer Timeline. I thought it was the one of the best changes FB has ever made. To each their own, I guess.

So you've always claimed you dislike Metro, and you now claim you don't like Timeline? Do you perhaps just have a problem with change? I'm not suggesting that's definitely the case, but I personally believe if you give Timeline a chance, and you try to understand why they've made the changes they have, you will like it. Giving it a chance can take some time, not just an hour or so.

Me too. It's like a hodge podge of content. Where should I even look? It's just horrendous.
