Fences 2.0 is an awesome desktop organizer

Fences is a program that helps you organize your desktop. It can hide icons when they are not in use as well as make it easy to place icons into moveable groups called "fences". Fences popularity has been driven by its capability to help users easily organize cluttered PC desktops by automatically grouping and sorting icons, shortcuts and files into managed fenced areas controlled by the user's custom settings. Fences 2.0 eliminates desktop clutter with adjustable fenced areas that organizes desktop objects into logical groups for quick access.

With this new release Fences users will now benefit from the ability to quickly create a portal view into all the files in a folder using an intuitively managed desktop fenced area. This enhancement extends the same organizational capabilities users have enjoyed with icons and shortcuts to folders. The new Fences 2.0 features will now keep frequently used folders visible and organized on the desktop by populating a fence with files from any folder. Customization options direct Fences to automatically place new icons in designated fenced areas. Additionally, a simple double click can hide or unhide all fence groups revealing an unobstructed view of the desktop.

New and improved in Fences version 2.0:

  • Create shaded areas called "fences" on your desktop in which you can place and organize icons.
  • NEW! Folder Portals: View and organize the contents of any folder as a fence on your desktop.
  • NEW! Desktop Pages: Multiple pages of Fences accessed via mouse swipe.
  • Double-click blank space on your desktop and all of your icons will fade out. Double-click again and they will return.
  • Define rules for where your icons are placed and how they are arranged. When a new icon gets added, from an installer for instance, it will be automatically added to your preferred "fence".
  • Customize the look and color of your fences.

Fences 2.0 is fully compatible with Windows 8/7/Vista/XP and is free to use via a 30-day trial with an option to purchase for $9.99.

I really can't understand why all the rant against the Stardock software price. How about the Adobe's Master Collection $2,600 or Camtasia Studio $370 price tag? Seeing people complaining for $10 is really annoying. LEAVE FENCES ALONE!!!

True. But you can't really compare an Adobe package that offers whatever it does (I have no idea how many things are in the Master Collection anymore lol) for $2,600 to a $10 desktop organizer program from Stardock. Photoshop etc vs. Fences? Not a really good comparison software wise

Are there any real advantages from the new one over the old? besides compatibility (which by your post doesn't seem to be a problem).

Love the title of this article, but no, Neowin doesnt give stardock extra treatment. All software gets called awesome in the title

if there were any bug fixes or performance fixes. sometimes fences crashes too.

(in cris crocker voice)

LEAVE FENCES ALONE!!!

srsly.... they should have left it free.... that definitly takes the stardock 'gateway drug' away, thus scaring people away from them.... not cool.

No need for Stardock trash. Just organize your folders/icons into small groups and give them similar names (e.g. Work Folder 1, Work Folder 2, etc) and voila! You just saved yourself $10.

Stardock crap should have been left in the 90s.

No doubt!

Don't know why anyone would need ANY type app like this, to begin with, and to pay for it, would be insane!

The price was lowered to $10. Something like a large Starbucks latte now.

And not everybody drinks Starbucks lattes. I get it though, you're paid to be a Stardock "Evangelist" so you go around pumping the tires of everything Stardock.

Oh god, it's shareware now? No thanks then, I'll stick with v1.01.143.

Agreed. Stardock are really starting to turn the screw these days. First they starting charging for Start8 despite saying it would always be free a month or two earlier, now Fences has no free version. No thanks.

I hope they use it to get neowin better servers.
