Gangnam Style is the first YouTube video to reach 1 billion views

Just a few weeks ago, we reported that the music video for Gangnam Style, the music video from Korean pop star PSY, had become the most viewed video on YouTube of all time. The video was posted on July 15 and back on November 24th, it had over 806 million views.

Now the Gangnam Style video has reached yet another major milestone. Earlier today, its views on YouTube exceeded the one billion mark. It is the first video posted on YouTube to reach that number of views and it managed to do so inside of six months.

Not only has the original version of Gangnam Style generated one billion views, other videos posted on PSY's official YouTube channel have achieved huge numbers on their own. A remix of the song, featuring another Korean artist Hyuna, has achieved over 200 million views.

In a post on the official YouTube blog, it also points out that the rise of the song has also had other effects. The song has generated over 600,000 downloads on iTunes. Even lots of parodies of Gangnam Style have been successful on YouTube, with the blog stating, "In fact, fan tributes to Gangnam Style are now being viewed 20 million times every single day."

One hit wonder. In 5 years...his millions will be gone and he will be on the side of the road like that DJ was begging for food.

Yes, of course. This was his seventh album, and he's quite popular in South Korea. This song might be a one hit wonder in other parts of the world, but SK won't forget him

Counted as a 'one hit wonder' in the USA and outside of East Asia, maybe, but he's been a successful star in South Korea for a while now.

It's amazing and sad that this guy says some outrageously hateful things about the same country he is making money from.

Over 1 billion views, and I'm not one of them. Strangely, I don't feel left out.

Watch out, we got a bad ass over here...

While Japanese artist are touring the U.S., they are mainly known by the anime community, and in addition, no Japanese song (or even artist) has really made a big hit here in the U.S, except for a handful of movie entertainers.

Maybe one of these days ...

I imagine that most of these people who don't like Gangnam Style are ones that take their music videos seriously. For someone like me who doesn't listen to much music, doesn't keep up with the latest singers, and thinks that music videos are generally just silly, I saw Gangnam Style and thought it was funny. Of course it probably helps that I don't understand most of what they're saying...

What would have been even better is if it was one of his "Anti American Songs". Then all the Americans are on the dance floor dancing to it, without even knowing what he was saying.

In a serious note, South Korea has been trying to infultrate the entertainment business (music and movies) here in the US by bringing sexy and attractive women and men, but no one has been successful, until a chubby 35 year-old uploaded a video of himself doing a horse dance.

Are the wonder girls Korean? They're pretty good and sexy. This song, I just don't like and it is in my preferred genre. But to each his own. These things happen.

Yes, they are Koreans.

Aegyo culture is a bit different from Western culture. I think a lot of Westerners like it, but its understandably hard to make waves in an industry which values different things.

Hope you're not referring to me?
I'm not butt hurt in any way, everyone is entitled to find funny in whatever they want so long as it doesn't come at the expense of others (well, not seriously any way).

All i was doing was expressing my views that i don;t find it funny. Which, i'm sure you'll agree, is my right as well.

I don't see why its so popular, the song isn't even that good and its not that funny. This time next year everyone will have forgotten about it.

Totally agree with this, i laugh at some stupid stuff... but for some reason this doesn't even raise a smile. I feel like i'm missing out

I looked at like 2 days ago and it was at 985M and I was wondering how long it would take to make it to 1B! Can't say I didn't expect it but holy crap!

I honestly don;t get it. The videos boring, the songs crap and it isn't funny.
Can some one please explain why it's become so popular?

Dear Institute of Humor,

apparently there must be a second underground institution competing with you that is big enough to challenge your approved standards for good humor.
I witnessed people laughing and cheering about things that would have NEVER slipped through your certification process and I can tell you: this happens often.

Obviously it has become a bigger problem over the years, or maybe the underground laughter has always been more private and less open to the public.
With Youtube offering people to see comments and view counts, this problem got the spotlight treatment and shows the lack of control on policing good humor and appreciation of homogenous standards.

I hope to work together with you more closely in future to remedy this problem.

Best Regards,
Chief Officer of the Internet Humor Police Department

Ha you lot are a right bunch of criticising ba**ards aren't ya!
I do not lack a sense of humour, but for some reason i just can't get on with this video and it being on every bloody ad break between shows is really starting to wind me up!

I'm not saying others can't find it funny, just that i don;t.

Apologise if my initial post looked like i was being a sour puss.

Although, Warwagon telling me something's funny, is not going to help it's case

After all, not everything is to be liked by everyone!

Quite agree and i wouldn't have it any other way!

Though I agree with you in a way, dude, its FUN! And its also fun when you see people getting "harassed" with this song. </troll>

I get people enjoying it, its catchy enough. Doesn't mean it isn't overrated and it isn't just a fad.

I think half of its appeal is that its Korean instead of English; its a novelty. If we had the same song in English I doubt it would get as much attention.

I don't really get it either. It's just one in a million with a catchy tune and silly video to me.

Have you bothered to read the song's lyrics?

Because some people have a different opinion? Oh imagine that, not everyone shares the same opinion with everyone else, oh I wonder how that could be possibly so.

Wow lot of Gangnam fan boys aren't there? Haha

Get over it people, I merely stated how I found it and suddenly there's a lynch mob out to get me. Get over yourselves and get a hobby!

Couldn't agree more. The thing just makes me want to
As most "modern" tunes do now a days!!

Haven't ever seen the whole thing and don't want to, but have seen clips of it on the news talking about all the hits it's had.

Sign of the impending apocalypse?

It may be a bit late for that now, but this did make me wonder how many extra hits is the video going to get now because its got 1 billion views. I know I've just watched it again and now I've got to watch it again until my ears are bleeding or I'm sick of hearing or it'll just keep singing in my head. I don't even know what a 'yotcha' is.
