HandBrake 0.9.5

HandBrake is an open-source, GPL-licensed, multiplatform, multithreaded DVD to MPEG-4 converter, available for MacOS X, Linux and Windows.

Supported sources: HandBrake is not limited to DVDs: it will now accept practically any type of video as a source.

Outputs:

  • File format: MP4, MKV, AVI or OGM
  • Video: MPEG-4 or H.264 (1 or 2 passes or constant quantizer/rate encoding)
  • Audio: AAC, MP3, Vorbis or AC-3 pass-through (supports encoding of several audio tracks)

Misc features:

  • Chapter selection
  • Basic subtitle support (burned into the picture)
  • Integrated bitrate calculator
  • Picture deinterlacing, cropping and scaling
  • Grayscale encoding

after using this application some... i think it's a solid/simple little conversion application.

seems to support conversion from DVD to x264 or MPEG4 and even supports Subtitles etc. you can even hardcode subtitles into the video stream.

Fantastic app. Ripping to x264 in .mkv is so easy and my TV can play stuff straight from USB memory stick. Awesome!

Wow, the release cycle on Handbrake is really long. I am so glad that the command prompt is hidden, now. It always drove me nuts when it would pop up all the time while I was typing.

It supports .avi and .ogm inputs not outputs. The OP needs to be corrected.
