HP announces Open WebOS 1.0, available by September

Well that was fast. HP today announced how developers will be getting access to the WebOS code that they're all after, according to The Verge. HP says that WebOS will be renamed to "Open WebOS 1.0" to mark the first open source release, and the company is making available the Enyo application framework code today to developers.

HP went on to say that they're planning on major releases for WebOS almost every month for the next six or seven months, which will "change up" the WebOS internals in a big way, apparently. The Verge points out that the biggest change is likely the switch to a standard Linux kernel, which will make WebOS work on a wider variety of hardware.

WebOS will move to the Apache 2.0 licence, and HP said that "it provides a legal framework that balances open innovation and a dependable user experience, which is consistent with HP's vision for webOS." They also say that it'll be possible for developers to get early Open WebOS builds onto their Touchpads during the year, however end users can expect their first taste in late summer.

Finally, HP said that they're looking at "all" WebOS devices to see if they're able to make Open WebOS available to them. If you bought the original Palm Pre, chin up! You may have a shiny new OS soon.

I bought a Touchpad and the OS wasn't the big failure, the app support was. I was forced to install Android and all the problems of WebOS are behind me now.

September? Is hp nuts?

LOL. This perked me up, it's funny.. do they know what month it is NOW. If they have webOS NOW, why can't they update it NOW!?!? Seems strange we have to way 9 months for a RE-release..

Sometimes I truly wonder who is REALLY running the show over at HP, they do so many things well, and then BAM they do something like this... and I begin to wonder.. if they know what they are doing..

You do realize there is licensed and patented technology at work underneath webOS? It will take a considerable amount of time for HP vet the code-base before they release webOS to the world. They will need to decide whether to either implement an OpenSource alternative to the licensed technology or completely remove the functionality.

Owner of a Palm Pixi+ here (for now). The WebOS platform is really nice and easy to use. Palm made the mistake of selling to HP IMHO. HP took the reigns and lied to their customers and said that my device wouldn't handle the 2.x update they pushed out a year or so ago. This really pi**ed a lot of people off who owned these devices which were quite a few. This led them to dump the device and move on. Others stayed in the home brew arena which is quite large and proved to everyone that indeed the device would handle those updates. (precentral.net)

I have fallen in love with one thing of the WebOS which is the 'type to locate' thing they have for it. Basically, type the name of the app, and within a character or two, it will pop up and narrow down to the app that you are looking for. Don't know if Android has that or not (Probably my next platform), or if any other platform does as I have been locked into this phone under contract, but hope to not lose that when I switch out soon.

HP failed miserably in the marketing of the OS, which I think is what ultimately led to it's demise. Failed attempt at tablets in an effort to try to revive it too.

I have to agree. But here's how it works. Release webOS it fails (as you say miserably), so they sell of what little tablets/ devices are left.. and they make a killing (because those devices are 100 bucks or less). Then they "find" some more to sell, and they fly off the shelf..

Now they want to think they can sell the webOS (again!) but no real changes are taking place, some blind executive can't figure out what to do.. so they want to re-release it.. but they STILL won't market it.. they are HOPING the current hype will allow it to sell.

Here is the REALLY dumb part.. we have to WAIT 9 months for it to make a come back, in the mean time the hype will subside... and the cycle continues.

DUMB! Release it now.. have to do it WHILE people are interested, not when people forget and they have to learn about it all over again.

Meg seems is doing an excellent job it seems while the other guy would have sold HP out like nothing.

The Stock Holders and Board would have to approve it first.

Now if only it would work on my old Palm Pilot...

Which apparently I just found...

EDIT: Apparently my parents lied to me years ago - it wasn't a Pilot, it was a Zire 21...
