iOS 4.1 released for iPhone and iPod Touch

Apple has released iOS 4.1 for iPod Touch and iPhone devices.

OS 4.0.1 for iPhone and iPod Touch is rolling out to devices right now. iTunes has been prompting users to update to the latest iteration of their mobile operating system. iOS 4.1 is available for iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod touch 2nd generation, iPod touch 3rd generation, and iPod touch 4th generation.

iOS 4.1 includes fixes for the iPhone 4 proximity sensor, iPhone 3G performance and bluetooth issues. The new mobile OS also includes a new game center to allow multiplayer games to be more social. iOS 4.1 users can also take HDR pictures, rent TV shows from iTunes and upload HD videos to YouTube. Apple is expected to release iOS 4.2 in November for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

Seems nice, is there any noticable performance increase on the iPod Touch 2G? I'm going to update as soon as there is a new jailbreak. I hear comex is working on one (The exploit has already been found).

What happens to your Jailbroken apps if the Jailbreak is removed?

They no longer work, or show up on the springboard. (I'm not sure if they are actually removed from /Applications though.)

I'm 90% sure everything remains, and this includes other tweaks such as ones to change the provider name. But they will all re-appear once you jailbreak again.

Like quite a few people here, I'm hanging on for the jailbreak before upgrading. I've become too used to the look of my iPod and the apps from Cydia to lose it for an upgrade that won't do a whole lot for my music player...

Open up iTunes and click on the iTunes store, wait for it to load up, then go back to your phone and try to update again. Should work.

Well its been 7 hours since this news article was posting and Itunes is still telling me that 4.0.2 is the latest update available. I downloaded the file for my 3G from the link above but I have no idea how to use it. Double clicking on it just opens iTunes/makes iTunes the active window.

Any thoughts? I'm in Canada, anyone else in Canada not see the 4.1 update yet?

Do I have to update to 4.0.2 before the 4.1 is available?

Thanks, I didn't know about the shift click. It's going now, here's to hoping!

I don't mind losing my jailbreak with 3.1 on my iPhone 3G. I just want the speed to be at least the same or better.

What's the story here? Will it be slower regardless?

Try it and find out?

Maybe a few sites will compare 3G 3.1.3 vs 4.1 but it'll take a few days at least

I tried 4.0 and it was an absolute nightmare.. So.. I don't want to waste all that time backing up - which would take a few hours by itself, and then restoring.

.. And then restoring again, and such.. I'll just wait for some comparison.

I was using 4.0 since release and immediately upgraded to 4.1. The performance is only marginally better. I reverted back to 3.1.3 and the 3g is finally useful again. Soo much snappier. I guess I will stick with ths version until I get a new phone. Its not worth upgrading.

Dont want to update to lose the jailbreak, if it's the only way that Im going to easily be able to jailbreak my PS3 if and when the PS3 JB app for the iPhone comes out - Im guessing you will at least need SSH access, or to d/l via Cydia.

Anyone else still not able to download it? Keeps telling me that 4.0.2 is the latest version for my iPod Touch 3rd gen

Try again. I had to hit "Update" twice for it to find the update for my iPod touch 3G.

Did you guys read in the dev-team's website that this release updates your baseband and that they don't know if they will be able to unlock it?

ummmmm.... what the heck is error 1004???? great.. that upgrade went down the drain on my iphone 4... any suggestions?

if you edited the hosts file at one point get it back to its original state

If your SHSH is on file, you can always downgrade to 4.0.1 if you want to restore your Jailbreak.... right?

What if you do update to 4.1 and it removes the jailbreak...will it also remove all the JB apps or will they still be on the phone taking up space but just inaccessible?

My fear is that one of these days, users with JB iPhones are going to plug their phone into their computer and iTunes is going to display a message with something along the lines of: "Jailbroken iPhone detected. Sync'ing disabled"

Yes you can always downgrade as long as you have your SHSH blobs saved.

The apps will still be on your iOS device but when you try to run them on a unjailbroken iOS device, it will give you an error.

You shouldn't worry about that happening since jailbreaking is legal and they would get in big trouble.

They can void the warranty on the phone still.

Yes.

Some people seem to think that jailbreaking being legal (in the US) means companies are powerless to stop it.

I don't really fancy reading the iTunes EULA but I would imagine there is a clause to deny access for "unauthorised devices."

For example Palm constantly trying to let their devices get access with Apple denying them.

I'm sure they could apply it to JB'ed phones too if they wanted.

Really? HOw!? if your device is jailbroken and it breaks and the device won't start, how will they know? And if your device is 100% but just has problems, how hard is it to just restore the phone to factory consition. Either way Apple would have no idea it was every jailbroken.

It depends on the problem, in some cases they would have no idea. In others where it is functional they would.

Regardless it is commonplace for "modifying" devices to void a warranty.

Whether they can pick up on it is a different matter.

You gotta realize they have ways to tell if the iPhone has ever been dropped (by using accelerometer data) and use that info to void your warranty. Just because something is legal doesn't mean Apple is obligated to keep anything working. If you break their EULA they are in their right not to support you as a user... for instance refusing to sync with iTunes because your device is no longer compatible or w/e.

The whole JB is legal thing in the US means that you won't be charged criminally (under the DMCA) if you have a Jailbroken phone. But Apple and AT&T can refuse to provide you any service they want. If they find that you broke your end of the contract (EULA) then they are within their legal rights to break their end of the contract. Criminality has nothing to do with it.

I'm not particularly worried about it, and will probably wait until 4.1 JB is released before updating so that I can keep my JB features. But just because Apple isn't doing anything now, doesn't mean that we as users can be naive about the possibilities.

you are right, I've done it before... I got a phone replaced under warranty after a JB went bad... but if say some shmuck brings their JB iPhone to the store for some issue and they see Cydia installed they will automatically void the warranty period.

My battery is slowly dying... on a 1 year old 3GS.

Disabled spotlight search? It sort of helped me on the previous iOS.

Well I know it was used to speed up the phone, but if it can save me battery, I think I'm gonna try it. Thanks for the tip!

Same my 3GS ain't lasting as good, turn on wifi when your not using it and keep bluetooth off all the time.

Brightness isn't so high and bluetooth is always off. I'm juggling between turning on and off wi-fi, 2G and 3G.

Yeah, I actually installed 4.1 about two days before it was made public. Works just fine on my iPhone 4, and will load it up on my old iPhone 3G.

anyone know if the AVRCP issues have been resolved?
What issues?

EDIT: If you are referring to the lack of track forward/back then that is not an "issue". Apple just for some assanine reason has not put in full AVRCP 1.0 features.

thats what i was referring to and it is an issue if customers are expecting it and are not getting it. to update, forward/back works now but song/playlist listing is not transferring still. getting closer but not quite there yet.

I heard that warnings are not to update as it removes jailbreaks and stops the unlock... And a jailbreak won't likely appear till 2011 after iOS 4.2 as there is no point jailbreaking 4.1 as it will get fixed before 4.2 ... And then we can at least look foward to iOS 4.2 jailbreaks for the iPad next year too.

But I hope the jailbreak will be soon as I'm getting a iPod Touch 4G for christmas and it will likely be preloaded with 4.2 if not 4.1

Then when November comes and they say 4.3 is going to be out in January. I guess you'll wait for that one too, because 2 months is not that far... right?

Downloading.

I just literally ****ed my phone up by trying to be a clever ass and jailbreaking the GM with an older version of Redsn0w and the 4.0 firmware. It removed the phone function and the wireless!

Luckily, i put my phone in to DFU mode and it INSTANTLY saw that 4.1 is available (through Apple) and now has 12 minutes remaining on download!
