iOS App Store hits 10 billion downloads [Updated]

Apples highly successful iOS App Store has just announced that it has hit the ten billion download mark for the iOS Family with over 400,000+ applications now available. The App Store was launched on July 10, 2008 with just a few 500 apps available and soon became a worldwide phenomenon with hitting the ten million download mark in just a matter of a few days. Less than a year later the store reached the one billion download mark, with 35,000 apps available. It is unclear to us though if the number of downloads includes duplicates and updates but these numbers are quite impressive either way. The current rate of downloads from the App Store is guaranteed to be on the rise as the announcement of the Verizon iPhone 4 will be hitting US stores on the 10th of February.

Apple is still yet to announce the lucky winner that will receive a $10,000 iTunes voucher to the person that downloaded the tenth Billion app.

[Update] Apple has released a statement saying that the lucky person that won the $10,000 iTunes voucher is Gail Davis of Kent, UK. Who was the person that downloaded the 10,000,000,000 app from the app store which was Paper Glider.

In my opinion $10k gift card is silly. Yes you can buy all sorts of things, but if this person just happened to buy the odd app, what a waste it'll become. Considering the phones, pods etc dont have a great amount of space for apps, music, shows. (ok you can get a 64GB version, but who says they have that?) They should of said, you can buy whatever apple stuff you want, then the rest goes on your itunes voucher. But hey it's free, but i'd be annoyed if I won it

I'd like a 10000$ gift card since I my app, music, audio books, films, TV programmes. But unlucky that I am, I reside in the province of Quebec, and the laws make it too much of a hassle for Apple to comply, so I couldn't participate!

I'd sell the gift card on ebay with a starting bid of 5,000

lol, you don't actually physically receive a 10,000 voucher to itunes, its just added to you account which i may remind you its non-transferable

You are wrong, it is actually a gift card.

When does the gift card expire? (Do iTune gift cards expire, never gotten one before)

Gift cards soon won't be able to expire (at least in Canada) but I would think this would have a few years on it..

It is already the case in Quebec since 2009

Wow. That's, uh, a big number.

Other things at 10 billion:
- The number of observable galaxies in the universe.
- The number of indexed web pages by Google as of 2010.
