iPad 2 features leak, include FaceTime + USB

Information about the iPad 2 leaked today, claiming that the device (which is expected sometime in April) will come with five new features. These feature include: a front-facing camera, lighter weight, USB port, new display glass (similar to iPhone 4) and 3-axis gyroscopes, according to a Chinese-language newspaper via DigiTimes.

It isn't surprising that Apple will be introducing the front-facing camera to the iPad 2, as the iPhone 4 iPod touch 4G and even Mac's have device-to-device video conferencing. During the teardown of the original iPad, it showed a placement for a front-facing camera, something that Apple scrapped sometime during the production phase. The camera placement was located in the top middle, when the iPad was held horizontally.

The report also suggests that the iPad 2 will be lighter in weight; a complaint that many customers raised when they first held the iPad. The next shocking feature is the USB port. Being able to load multimedia or even applications through a USB port would be a huge benefit for the device. iPhone-to-iPad 2 tethering anyone?

The newspaper also claims that the iPad 2 will feature 'new display technology', which could only mean that Apple plans to use the same glass they used in the iPhone 4 in the iPad 2. This would also mean that Apple would be able to pump a much larger display out of the device, like it did for the iPhone 4.

The last feature leaked is the 3-axis gyroscope. The next iPad will have a 3-axis gyroscope, like the iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4G currently have. Gaming on the iPad just got better.

Apple will likely hold another press conference in late March to announce the new iPad 2.

None if this is news really. The only thing I would say that is suprising at all is the USB port, if its true. If a USB port is on the next device that is Apple admiting in their way they were wrong about not needing one.

Sadly iLovers will think all of this is great, when it should have been in there on day 1. Think about it, the iPad was launched in April? The iPhone 4 in June? They use the same CPU, but the iPad does not have the 3-Axis Gyo, or a camera????? Yet the were just months apart and use the same brand new Apple owned CPU?

Why? This is a typical Apple stunt. Hype version 1 device like crazy, hold back obvious stuff, hype version 2 a year later that basically includes stuff held back from version 1, and stuff that users totally freaked out about (USB). iFans go crazy and buy version 1, then go crazy and buy version 2 and praise Apple. One word.............. Sheeple.

It appears as Apple is losing their 'magic' as they put it. A lot of people are avoiding the shiny new Apple items and are finally realizing there is more than just Apple.

No surprise here regarding the USB port, it's just european regulation. Starting 2011 all devices with cell phone capability must have standarized USB port (iirc it's micro USB, but not sure), so that all chargers fit into all devices. Ok, iPod is not 100% cell phone, but it's got mobile network access.

We are going to see the same with iPhone 5.

Did they say FaceTime? Facebook won't like that.

And Apple should care about that because? Next to that FaceBook and FaceTime have nothing to do with each other.

If they add a USB port with they not need to add some sort of file system to iOS, I dont think this will happen.... I dont even think this is "leaks" its just speculation.

iOS has a file system, very similar to that of OSX, it just isn't exposed to the user interface without some sort of cydia store application. What iOS is really lacking is Finder and an API for saving files as to a user selected location on the file system.
The thing is the way the crippled the file system API in the first place makes it difficult for them to fix the situation in a later release. The current situation is worse than crapware on windows where there are a bunch of incompatible hacks to bring file structure to the iPad via various file manager applications.

Does any one here actually own an iPad? You can currently use the camera connection kit to connect a whole bunch of USB devices to a (jail broken) iPad.

Yes i own an ipad, and using it atm to post this, and agreed with the connector kit thing, but the main hubub this is causing is because it wouldnt need an addon to do usb. Personally i have no use for a camera, i dont even use the iSight in my MBP, and doubtfull i would use a USB port either

Annoying is Apple. They're a great tech company, but an even better marketing company.

Their products always come 'crippled' so they can get an upgrade from first users.

USB, USschme. This is Apple after all so obviously it's going to be a magical USB. USB3?

But I for one welcome the weight issue being addressed as the Air seems lighter!

Leak,,, untill somebody from apple confirms, or releaces it, i wont treat this as a leak, ill treat it as

" something some dude made up and told another dude "

In other news, Apple and Massarati teamed up for the iCar, and is partnered with BMW for the iCar Mini

I'd like to see a higher res display and the ability to output video at least at 720p, preferably 1080p.

I wonder if a dual core ARM processor is a possibility as well.

It will, european regulations.

The article implies a USB port for connecting peripherals (as in the ports on your computer to connect keyboard and mouse). That is what I'm saying is unlikely.

They may include a universal usb port for computer syncing and charging. But thats different. Plus I thought that the European regulations are for cellphones not all electronics.

I'd be suprised if they didn't use retina display for the next ipad, camera and gyro sensor!

also, if usb is true it will make a lot of noise! but 10 bucks say the USB will probably be highly crippled, just like the earlier bluetooth functionalities. don't get me wrong, they technically could do a lot, but apple would restrict it so it only performs pre-designed tasks such as keyboard, print etc. Not that they won't ever allow more functionality, but they won't in the first version.

Apple's 2nd gen products are usually pretty good and it'll be interesting to see what they come up with. I don't have an iPad nor would I consider getting one at the moment... Maybe they'll be a killer app/feature that grabs me That's what makes Apple exciting. In any case, competition is always good!

Just goes to show what everyone already knew: Apple intentionally held back features to keep their annual cycle in tact. People that buy Apple products are the biggest suckers out there.

No only people who buy the first incarnation of an apple product. I like my apple iphone 4g

Only in the same way that Microsoft is holding back on the new features for WIndows 8. They could've been in Windows 7, but they want people to buy Windows 8, so they didn't add them.

Of course, the statement I just made is total nonsense - the real reason those features are going into (presumably) Windows 8 is because it involves extra R&D time. Couldn't the same apply here for Apple?

The same could apply for Apple, except if these are the new features than I cant see how much R&D was really required especially since they were already available in their Iphone4 and Itouch4. Now if they had said they included a sliding keyboard than I can maybe agree that required additional time, and even than I cant see that taking THAT long.

Well, the iPad came out several months before the iPad. Apple has a release cycle, and don't like to release too much at the same time, so they probably had to push the iPad out the door well before the iPhone 4 - think of the manufacturing, as well as supporting the Apple Store with 2 major new products (iPhone 4 and iPad).

As for USB, it's an easy thing to add to an OS that already supports it (like Windows, OS X and Linux), but iOS has never had a USB port as a part of the system. Drivers would need to be created for devices out there, API's would need to be updated to allow for access to those devices. There's a lot of work to enable that.

That being said, USB is looking quite unlikely at this point.

Well at the end of the day whatever makes the company more money. I mean hell they aren't going to release a device that has everything you need when they can break it up and sell more over a longer period of time, from a business perspective thats just crazy to do it any other way!

ye, adding USB needs a year more on R&D

had it, wasn't impressed. definitely not a laptop replacement.
especially if you have an iphone/itouch, it does almost everything an ipad does, and it's a LOT more portable.

the only thing i like about it is It's fun to play games and watch movies on the airplane with it's extra long battery life..

I understand that and I agree, but she doesn't download, or anything. She just browses the internet, print if she needs to, and that's about it.

Printing you definitely want a laptop. Can't get airprint to recognise any of our printers at work, whether connected by SMB, or via bonjour. Mostly HP printers at that.

Okay, I'm sure it'll get better. She just wants an iPad.

Nothing special...All those features should have been included in the first iPad release...I guess that's a way for them to make money...I wonder how many people will discard their "old" iPad for the "new" one...

"iPhone-to-iPad 2 tethering anyone?"

I think would be safe to say anyone who can afford an iphone 4 and an ipad would have a 3G ipad and no need to teether them...

Not true. I have an iPhone 4 and a wifi iPad. I could afford a 3G iPad but don't want two data contracts. I figured I'd just use my phone when wifi isn't available. That isn't to say I wouldn't like to use my iPad on 3G though.

Not even close.

According to engadget:

On the USB plug front, which could mark a sort of adolescent transition of the iPad into "computer," our source says it's, sadly, very unlikely.

Same goes for a Retina display. I doubt these rumors. Imagine the battery drain on fueling games on 2048*1536, which Retina equivalence would take this to. Will not happen. It's a 24-27" display resolution on a tiny mobile device for christ sake.

Well this is Neowin after all. Hell in another topic, I pointed out that both AT&T and T-mobile were running BOGO wp7 deals...but that article still hasn't been updated.
