iPad 2 screen revealed?

With the help of the iFixYouri iPhone 4 repair shop, 9to5Mac has landed themselves what they believe is an iPad 2 LCD, fresh out of China. Almost 2 weeks a go, the website had acquired images and data that seemed to forecast a February 9th launch. But we can see, at least in part, what eventually will become the iPad 2.

The display is lighter, and over 1mm thinner than the current iPad’s display with a smaller surrounding frame.

A comment posted on the site by a person calling himself "King" also went further into detail pointing out various specifications, but these have yet to be verified; they are:

  • (LP)097×02 SLN1= LG Phillips
  • LP(097)x02 SLN1= 9.7 inch display
  • LP097x(02) SLN1= used on displays with xga,sxga,wsxga
  • LP097x02 (SL)N1= H-IPS
  • LP097x02 SL (N1)= Not sure

So Lg Phillips 9.7in XGA 1024×768 H-IPS display

More images of the screen can be seen here, in comparison to an iPad 1 screen.

New iPad ! now 1mm thinner !

Kinda getting to Porsche levels of comedy where they release a "new" 911 where the only difference is the number of spokes on the wheels.

and this is only the second Ipad.. hahaha

Where did this feb 9th date come from? I know HP/Palm is supposed to have a big even on that same date, to release whats supposed to be a 9.7" webos tablet and HP is saying they wont announce anything unless they are ready to ship. My hope is that this is a mixup and the display is for the new webos tablet that HP is set to release/announce on the 9th.

It's because February 9th is a Wednesday. The rumor is that the iPad will be announced/released on a month where the 9th is a Wednesday, based on leaked screenshots.

From the pictures on the site, it looks like this screen will still suffer from massive glare/reflection problems. Hopefully not as I'm kinda interested in it. Was interested in the first one until they revealed the specs and was amazed at how apple essentially went from iphone4 type technology all the way back to iphone 1. Guess they were just planning their yearly release way ahead.

ehm, the ipad were announced half a year before the iphone 4 and beats the 3gs hardware pretty darn well... it's not really strange that the iphone 4 have better hardware, or well it's really just the memory that's higher, the iphone 4 cpu is a bit weaker.

but yea, the ipad sure could have used some more ram, still, it's a very speedy device and can easily compete with the iphone 4, the iphone 4 will be able to run much more apps in the background though due to the apps having a smaller memory usage and the device having double the ram

as for the screen, well, i am sure it wont have more glare than the first ipad at least

Guys guys guys!
Stop focussing on the resolution! If you read it says:
"LP097x(02) SLN1= used on displays with xga,sxga,wsxga"

XGA = 1024x768, SXGA = 1280x1024, WSXGA = 1680x1050
So it's not necessarily definitely 1024x768!

Rumor has it the iPad2 will also come with a case and a motherboard with chips and stuff on it. Radical decisions.

Pity they didn't improve the resolution of the display. Seems like all that retina-in-the-iPad hopes are gone.

Who would have guessed it - an iPad with a screen...................SHOCKER!!!!!!!!..................

Of course the resolution is too low, they can get away with one, maybe two more generations before revealing a 'revolutionary' new screen.

Exactly. Look how apple holds back on technology so they can milk money out of their fanboys. The iphone 4 got upgraded to a fancy uber high resolution 5mp camera when other phones out there have had 8mp cameras.

MP isn't everything...

the resolution is fine. sure some people would say the dpi is far to low but seriously, your not gonna hold a tablet as close as many hold their cellphones.

If you have it in your lap or on a table in front of you won't be able to see the pixels and if you are it's barely.

and seriously, i'd rather not add another $50-100 to the price and up all the apps size by 50% just to get a few more pixels but hey that's me

yea... instead of going for a sensor picking up as many pixels as possible to took that same space and choose a lower resolution for superior quality instead, can't see how that is a bad choice... rather have a clear picture with no noise or otherwise bad quality instead of some extra pixels.

what do you need 8mp for anyway? it's strange, people talk about how fantastic HD TVs are but a camera with 5mp? That's so bad, so low resolution, maybe you should take a look at the resolution of that TV and then at those 5mp photos, maybe you would realize it's far more than enough ^^

I agree. For me 5MP is good enough. The only thing I need now is a way to increase exposure so I can take pictures in the dark.

the almost unbelievable "1280x960" coming in 2012...just wait!

The world will end.

I can see a design flaw already, people won't be happy with that grey thing in the middle of the screen.

PS. How did they find out the resolution?

...and obsolete 4:3 Aspect Ratio, fuuu... Most things (Books, TVs) are close to 16:9 for years now.

TO be honest the 4:3 ratio works great for the iPad and a 16:9 or 16:10 tablet would be awkward to hold

Your right, it's another reason I prefer my iPad.

indeed, 16:9 or 16:10 is a horrible format for a tablet, when held in landscape it to wide and lacks vertical space (we all know what a pain in the as a netbook screen is for most tasks no room at all) and in portrait mode the width is far to lacking, if you want to view a webpage as a whole it'll be so small you can't read it just to fit the width

seriously the 4:3 aspectratio of the ipad is great, only time you even remotely would want a widescreen is when watching videos, but hey, it it were a widescreen it would probably mean the screen would instead be just as big as the area the video is covering so no loss

Exactly. Almost all web pages are formated to best be viewed at 4:3 for exactly the reasons you say. Books and magazines also fall under "better optimized for 4:3". The only real use for a widescreen format is for watching videos...so you guys that prefer a device that is widescreen so it is optimized for ONE of its many uses need to get your heads checked.

The 4:3 aspect ratio is not obsolete. It was forced into pseudo-retirement by the screen manufacturers as well as the TV industry in order to boost sells.

I would say its exactly opposite. Most modern visual content is designed on 16:9 screens for 16:9 screens. Text content can be resized in order to fill the screen, but video can't, so I would say 16:9 wins. I own Kindle which is closer to 16:10 format ant it fits into most jackets perfectly (like passport fits perfectly into most shirt pockets). You can't do that with iPad. You must hold it in hand or use carrying bag. Proper size matters (it should be a little smaller than standard pocket size) because it makes device handy. This is why iPad size is wrong, outdated and unpractical, especially for full screen device.

There's always people who are going to prefer a different format, but I do think that the 3:4 format pleases more people

Web pages are not formatted for 4:3 aspect ratios. It is incorrect to assume that.

well kinda true, they aren't directly formatted for 4:3, but they sure aren't formatted for widescreens either though.
