iPad 3 press event confirmed for March 7th

It's been about a year since Apple launched the iPad 2 and now the company is close to revealing the third major version of its best selling tablet product. The Verge and other media outlets are reporting they have received an invite by Apple to attend a press event in San Francisco on Wednesday, March 7th.

The invite image itself clearly indicates that it will focus on the iPad, showing what looks like the first official look at the iPad 3 with its highly rumored high definition screen.

Apple's iPad has been a huge sales success for the company since the first one launched in 2010. In its last financial conference call, the company said that it had sold over 15 million iPad units in the fourth quarter of 2011. With the possible exception of Amazon's recent Kindle Fire tablet, no other tablet maker has released a product that has come close to the iPad's sales numbers.

Rumors on the Internet claim that the iPad 3 will feature a quad-core processor with others suggesting that Apple might keep the iPad 2 on sale and reduce its price to perhaps compete with the Kindle Fire and the other cheaper tablet models. Thankfully, all the speculation wlll be ending in just eight days.

the entire display industry is going to higher and higher resolution. what's the big deal about an expected higher resolution? to view boobs in my avatar?

Very classy, Apple, deciding to release your product on the same date that a competitor has already set about a month ago.

what. is there a rules against that? where is it written? if the "competitor" can't retain their thunder on their own merits and by themselves, then they are not "competitor" at all, isn't it?

some people simply don't know how to think outside their self-imposed box.

Its silly and it will damage them. They are doing it on the same day as SQL 2012. Let me see what businesses will want to attend.

The screen shows Maps, Calendar and Keynote.

The Calendar displays the date of the event, and Keynote shows that it'll be a Keynote event (duh).

What about Maps though ? It shows Apple headquarters, yet the event won't be held over there. I suspect a major overhaul to Maps, like 3D perspective and 3D buildings. Apple already bought the best company out there to do this. The upcoming iPad could become the best GPS device ever made.

Sure, you can put it on your trucks dashboard buahaha

if that is a picture of iPad 3 then the screen looks higher resolution, but thats just a guess from appearances, they obviously blurred it some in the picture to hide it a bit

That's some interesting lighting on those fingers.

almost seems like a superimposed image the way they are lit compared to the iPad

Looks like it's time to put up the iPad 2 on eBay before the prices plummet.
Should be able to get at least $400 out of it, so I'll definitely throw in the extra $100 for the upgrade.

There's also a rumor that it might be $70 more than the equivalent iPad (so the base price would be $569)

That would blow, but I wouldn't put that past Apple.
Let's hope that's a rumor that doesn't come true.

I'm sure the retina display is the only reason it will cost more

Can't wait. I hope it has 4G and retina display. Buying the 4G model for sure. Unfortunately Apple is not very smart. The Wifi model does not have a GPS chip (despite one can tether their phone to it). Only the 3G models in the past have a GPS chip. I don't think that will change. If it does, I would be surprised.

What an ignorant comment. Better iPad = better Android tablets. Competition is a good thing.

The iPhone 4S was underwhelming, and if it would have been better then probably the newer Android phones coming up would be better/cheaper. Hoping for mediocrity from either camp is just a fail attitude IMO.

Love all the speculation.

I hope the announcement underwhelms the iFans like the iPhone 4S.

Underwhelmed enough for it to outsell even analysts sales expectations

Finally gonna invest in a iPad now it's got a retina display, been waiting for ages

I've been waiting for ages for the day I could put a magnifying glass up to my tablet's screen and say it was difficult to count the pixels.

Guys stop making me laugh in public places!

LOL

How about no new hardware, but a redesigned chassis that will slightly improve the colour contrast with all the other iDevices you have, and only 90% of the price of what you already have.

OOOOH, All black!

that's what the event is for. NOw in Black!

It's going to be quite costly for me soon I want to get:

- New 27 iMac with SSD when they come out
- New aTV to replace my 1st gen
- New iPad 3 (I had the iPad 1 but I got rid of it a long time ago since I didn't use it much)
- Possibly a new MBA if the new ones are different enough (15" would be nice)

Have fun spending that much. Why would you buy an iPad 3 if you didn't use the iPad 1? Apple don't add massive improvements, so the likelihood that you'd use the iPad 3 much more isn't very high.

If you have the money why not?

I think I'll use it more because there's a lot more apps for it now and to be honest I kinda miss my old iPad

I'll help you reduce the bill. Get those 5 incher phones, as it serves the purpose of both the tablet and phone.
And get Windows 8 tablet. You wouldn't need to buy a tablet and PC separately. It has both.

I use my iPhone4S to generate the income that I'll alter spend on Apple products so it wouldn't work very good

phones are way to small, and most don't have to buy a pc and tablet separately. Some might, like yourself, but most iPad users have no need for a pc.

I didn't use my iPad 1 much either, but my iPad 2 has seen a lot more use. The changes in form factor and weight along with the speed increase made it more enjoyable to use.

everyone is not the same.. useless to you perhaps, i am sure you have tons of items, hobbies, interests that are 100% useless to others.

maybe it is and maybe its not. "see and touch" is in the invite.

Most likely not...

Not kidding, almost all parts of the iPad have been leaked so far.

The home button is staying.

Removing the home button would violate Apple's one Button, one Realm, one Leader design philosophy.

The iPad has 4 buttons and a switch btw

Rudy said,

There is just one button you need to fully operate the device plus the switch.

The on/off switch is something different, as it's not required for bare naked constant use.
(No turning off/manually lock)

Hence in Apple's terms it's a "one button device".
