Winamp for Mac OS Revealed?

''Hello, I'm a Mac user and i'm wondering if there is a version or some way to run Winamp on Mac OS X... It would be really really nice..''

How many times have we heard that question? A lot, thousands, many...but from now on not anymore. It seems that the Winamp developers are silently testing a Mac OS version. Why Winamp, you may ask. Winamp is great due to its simplicity. It plays everything. It's how you listen, watch and manage music, video, podcasts and internet radio on your desktop and devices. Winamp is for people who like to customize, tinker and tweak: offering the widest range of extensions, skins, and services to add to your experience.

Naturally, there’s absolutely nothing about release date, even from a speculation point of view. Nevertheless, it’s refreshing to see Winamp devs still working hard even after the AOL deal.

So go ahead and download Winamp for Mac OS!!

Haha, so some people expect a random pre-alpha version of Winamp for OSX found by accident to be stable, complete and have the final UI?

REALLY?!

I agree with the comments about iTunes, I freaking hate using that software in OS X or WIndows. It's like love child of Real Player and Sonic Stage. FYI under Windows Apple's software doesn't look native either.

What's your point? Microsoft's software doesn't even look native on Windows (Zune, Messenger, Office, Internet Explorer etc. all use custom appearances). Saying it's okay for Winamp to use a non-standard interface on OS X Lion because Apple's iTunes uses a non-standard interface on Windows makes no sense.

That is a fair point, two wrongs don't make a right.

Having said that even under OS X Apple has drifted from the norm, though not nearly as badly as some. *Cough* Adobe *Cough* (adobeuigripes)

I would say my point stands that this is pre-alpha, so that skin is far from final if relevant at all. As long as the main skin pays at least homage to OS X and you can get 3rd party skins to blend in, I think it won't be so bad.

I don't really see why people think they need an alternative application to play mp3's... iTunes plays songs perfectly fine! I think people just like to whinge. It's a program it plays music and it works, use it and get on with your lives.

If that's all it did, I wouldn't be 'whinging' about it...it's bloated, it's an audio player, a video player, an organizer, a music store, an app store, it duplicates my music, it forgets they're on a seperate drive. I just want a dang player.

For someone with a huge library, nothing has compared to Winamp for its management ability. iTunes in Lion still struggles to handle my library of 100,000 tracks, and it still doesn't recognize my music that is flac.

Looks like it can only import your iTunes library for now. Added some watch folders but it didn't do anything with them. Format support seems limited to mp3 and m4a too. At this stage it's pretty much useless but let's see what they do with it.

I'm surprised winamp is still alive. I would have figured everyone would have converted to foobar2000 now.

So Winamp is finally coming to Mac? I use to love Winamp on on Microsoft Windows, but what I am wondering is what would they bring for Mac OS X Lion? Makes me wonder what them decide finally to make one for Macs and also isn't Winamp already available for iOS? But I use TuneIn.

Winamp is awesome, used it for many years. Nothing whips the lama's ass more than Winamp. Oh, but doesn't the name Win in Winamp refer to Windows? Aw well... still better than fools bar in my book. But if it's a contest, XMplay is my #1 choice. Unmatched sound output. You can even load an awesome 1GB sound font to play all your midis.

Either way, way to go Winamp or MacAmp

People who are on Windows should give Zune player a try btw. I have always been running Winamp, but after getting a WP7 and installing Zune... I have to say that the Zune software is so visually amazing haha

Why does every media player for the mac always have to look like it wants to be itunes.

exactly, like songbird...i can't see much difference. i hope this takes off, we need another alternative.

Because it's a solid design that apparently works well.

Because many Mac users are used to that look, and iTunes happens to also be a media player.

It's a bit like how Windows users expect a file manager to work much like Windows Explorer.

And you missed that? Lol.

Way to combine two different things there ...I miss it from Windows, it didnt crash in Windows

Clearly you've never used foobar2000.

Used it and Winamp is way better.......Not sure how you can actually recommend foobar2000...

Looks about as horrible as the Windows version. Seriously, who still uses this crap? There are so many better alternatives on both platforms.

I use it for over 8 years and it's the best player ever, I have tested all the most popular players many times and none of them impressed me more than Winamp.

That design it's internal for test only, use your brain if you have one.

Why would you waste time in creating custom interface elements for internal testing when its easier to just use the default interface provided by Mac OS X?

Lol son, why so angry? It is bloated and has poor sound quality. I had to use plug-ins for it to get it to sound as good as foobar2000.

The sound quality it's the same.

Really...you apparently don't own a Mac

i kinda was thinking about this.
for me Winamp has nice PLUGINS so i tried to use it once. but then i was like "meeh whatever" and now i keep using JetAudio or sometimes Zune like always.
But i never could like Winamp... but its also up to everyone. i even used and though ALsong was a nice player but I ended up liking more Jetaudio. because for some unknown reason i just like it.

I suppose you are kidding right and thats a joke.......

Right?

I like the Zune software for its metro UI but it doesn't have lyrics or last.fm support. Until those 2 things are added I can not use it full time. Not to mention it writes garbage files and messes with my tags, instead of just operating in a read only mode.

If they had to use a non-standard UI, they could have at least copied apps like Sparrow, Reeder or Twitter for Mac.
