Member Reviews: Samsung Galaxy S4

Whenever we can, usually in the weekend, we showcase a tech hardware related review submitted by a member in our forums. Remember that we consider all reviews that are submitted here. So if you've recently bought a new gadget and you're impressed, or even disappointed by it, let the community know by submitting a review about it; your review might make the front page next week!

This week we're posting a 'quick 'n dirty' review of the Samsung Galaxy S4 done by subscriber Fus10n. It's so short (yet worthwhile) that we've included the whole review below.

I am very excited to have purchased the new Galaxy S4.. My last phone was a Nexus 4.

This isn't suppose to be an indepth review.. but just for someone looking for a new phone or interested and didn't want to have to weed out all the junk..

Screen - 10/10

Clearest screen I have ever seen for the size.. The iPhone 5 has a great looking screen.. but the size is what turned me off.. This screen is huge and very easy to read.. Night and Day when compared to the S3 due to the resolution.

Speed - 6/10 (stock) - 9/10

Stock.. The phone is laggy and highly bloated. Coming from the Nexus 4 made me forget how fast the Android OS can be degraded from OEMs. After removing all the bloat and replacing TouchWiz with Nova.. There was a HUGE difference in speed and boot times.. The lag went away. I give the Stock Speed 6/10 and after you remove bloat and do some tweaks, 9/10 when compared to a Nexus 4.

Features

This phone has a ton of new features, but I don't really use any of the new ones. I just use the "screen lock" which is an eye sensor that keeps the screen turned on as long as you are looking at it.. This feature was also on the S3. Not going to grade the features because I don't really use and of the "extras".

Data Speed - 10/10

52Mbs down on LTE AT&T.. Sums it up.. especially coming from a Nexus 4.. Really missed my LTE speeds.

Camera - 10/10

I don't want to come off as a "fan boy" here rating everything 10/10.. but this camera is amazing.. I really missed having a good camera on my Nexus 4.. This Camera takes better pics than most point and shoots..

For tips and tricks I have added more info here and if you would like me to help you remove bloat or have any questions, please let me know in the forum thread..

Thanks Fus10n!

Our very own Tim Schiesser will be putting up his (always) extensive review of the Samsung Galaxy S4 soon, but for now you can check out his unboxing video if you want.

I love this phone. Its only flaw is the no apps 2 sd thing and Samsung is supposed to be fixing this soon. It will be perfect when that patch comes out.

The picture above doesn't look Galaxy S4-ish at all.
Yeah the lame Neowin writers who are so blind and dumb, photoshopped GS4 to a picture of a GS3. You better fix it or I am going to screenshot it over to Samsung and have them pin you for bad advertising of their product. In fact I will do it now.

My lumia 920 would been -3/10. The lumia camera is super slow taking around 1 min before phone takes the photo and look like blured. I was embarrassed to take any photos with it and show friends. But my Samsung s4 all my photos look amazing even in low light.

I wouldn't want a phone like this. Walking around with it in my pants pocket, women will think I have a weird broad penis and run away from me.

So you would rather walk around with an iPhone, or a smaller phone?

Girls usually know the difference in a phone and a penis.. If they question it, just ask if they would like to see it Works.Every.Time

The phone is pretty big, which I find amazing.. Great for playing games

I still dont get the laggy parts this phone is anything but laggy, perhaps its the different OEM packages that make the difference because I've experienced NO lag on this phone whatsoever.

im also much the same with my s3, never found it laggy maybe different hone companies load crap on it?

maybe it depends on how familiar you are with other OS's

i found the S4 to very "fast" but laggy at the same time....sure it gets from an app to the home screen in 0.1 seconds but the frame rate/presentation were miles behind the iphone in terms of smooth response and animation

i have tried an S4 and also an S3 and compared to the nexus 4 they are indeed a little "laggy". they just dont feel equally responsive. maybe you have to use a nexus 4 for a while to recognize that tiny difference.

Co_Co nailed it, the S4 is very fast.. plays games great as well.. However, coming from a Nexus, you can really tell the difference in a OEM load and a clean OS.

Its not laggy. Just turn off the animations. Samsung had them set to 0.1x for how long the animations take from screen to screen.

While I agree mostly with you, there are exceptions.. In the past 5 years, these are the phones I have had,
Blackberry - Curve 9350 - Bold 9780 - 8830 - Torch 9800 -
Android - HTC Hero - HTC Evo 4G - HTC EVO 3D - HTC Thunderbolt - Samsung Epic 4G - Samsung Moment - Samsung Galaxy SII Skyrocket - Samsung Galaxy Note - Samsung Galaxy SIII - Nexus 4 - Samsung Galaxy S4 (CURRENT)
Windows Mobile: HTC Touch Pro 2 - Cingular 8525 - Cingular 8125
iPhone - 2G, 3G, 3Gs, 4, 4s, 5
Palm Pre

I can tell you I didn't love all of those

Camera 10/10, lol

My Lumia 920 is therefore 15/10

And my 1DX is sitting on the sidelines laughing at both.

The Lumia 920 is kind of a one trick pony, with its low-light shooting. In daylight? Average camera.

Thank you for ready my review everyone. What made the Camera a 10/10 for me is one, it is simply amazing for a phone.. Also, I came from a Nexus 4. The difference to me was a Polaroid and a DSLR. The Nexus 4 camera is horrid and I did not like using it for "everyday" pics.

Average? Lol. The 920 smokes the S4 even in day light pics.

I have an S4 and none of my pics look like that. Looks like yoi purposely set the cam to take sick pictures. There have been several reviews that show the S4 too crisper shoot that were clear as a whistle but saturated. Ur pics suck
How can you do a revoew and purposely mick up the shots.
Low light shots? Who cares. The flash if set to auto will shine bright enougb to take a fairly nice shot. I have taken a shot in low light and they arent that dark. All it takes is the change of 2 camera settings. Learn how to use a smartphone camera
