Microsoft announces Halo Master Chief Collection - HD remakes of Halo 1-4

Live on stage at E3 Microsoft has just made a tons of gamers incredibly happy by announcing the HD remake of the super popular Halo franchise. As rumored previously, Microsoft is re-releasing “Halo: Combat Evolved”,” Halo 2”, “Halo 3” and “Halo 4” – all remade for the Xbox One and upgraded with HD graphics.

This comes after months of waiting for a release of Halo 2: Anniversary Edition, but it seems the company wanted to impress players even more, not to mention get new players ready for Halo 5: Guardians, due out next year.

The four games are coming in one single package named “Halo: The Master Chief Collection" on November 11th.

For some, the most exciting part of this package is the multiplayer. The Master Chief Collection has the same exact multiplayer that shipped with Halo 2. The maps - every single one of them that's ever been released, like the rest of the games, have been recreated for the new console.

Also included in the Master Chief Collect is Halo Nightfall. Nightfall is the serialized story of Master Chief and the Halo universe, from Ridley Scott,  that precedes the events of Halo 5: Guardians.

And to top all of this, Halo 5 Multiplayer Beta will also be coming out this holiday season, available to folks who purchase the Master Chief Collection.

Why would you expect to hear about PC games at an Xbox conference?

Maybe because "Xbox" is the brand for everything media related… (e.g. music, video, game (WP, WRT, …)

That may be, but the fact that PC games aren't called Xbox games makes your point totally invalid. Were talking about PC games here, not music and video.

Wait what? What about the Xbox branded PC games available from the Windows Store?

Oh, you mean the games primarily designed for mobile devices like tablets? ala Windows Phone? I'm fairly sure, and the OP can probably back me up, that we're talking about traditional desktop games here. Metro isn't a serious gaming platform (yet), as evidenced by the total lack of AAA games on it and the fact that all major games developers without exception are ignoring it completely. Not saying they should, I think having AAA games delivered through the store in the form of Metro apps would be great, but that's not where we're at and it's not what we're talking about here.

And I dare say you knew that, and just wanted the last word ;)

Hahahhahahahaha. We are two!!!!

I'll be moving earth and sky to purchase an Xbox One with the Master Chief Collection.

YESSSSSS

100 maps!!! WOOOHOOO!

YEAH! So happy man!

I've got an Xbox One but it's just a really expensive Blu Ray player ATM. Once this comes out I'll get some real use out of it.

Halo 3 is my favourite Halo, I must've wasted weeks of my life on it!

You mean like the PS3 was at launch? That was VERY expensive at the time IIRC :)

To be honest, the PS3 was "a bargain". You couldn't get a Blu Ray player lower than that price ;)

OK so an HD remaster of the Halo games is cool and everything but it is kind of depressing that they make such a big deal out of it. People moan at Nintendo using the same characters/IP all the time but at least they give us new games and not just HD remasters.

Nintendo gives us HD remasters too. Wind Walker HD, Super Mario 64 DS remake and so on.

They also announced Halo 5 alongside it, so you got your new game and HD remakes.

The difference is that Microsoft will have third party developers that will make up the difference; Nintendo systems appear to only be bought for the first party games from Nintendo. If you are buying a gaming console strictly to play games from a single developer/publisher, you'd expect a little more outside the comfort zone they've stuck to.

This is why people are talking about wanting Nintendo to become a third party developer so they can quit spending money on these consoles that gather dust whenever there isn't a Nintendo game out. Of course, that's only speaking from a consumer standpoint.

I do agree that the Wii U would probably be a better buy than an Xbox One right now, but that's only because Nintendo is starting to drop bombs. (that, and I enjoy local multiplayer games better on consoles anyway)

You people are acting like the conference consisted of Halo and nothing else. It's really scraping the bottom of the Xbox bashing barrel. The Halo announcements were barely 5-10 minutes out of the whole conference.

I believe the shaft is the gift that keeps on giving when it comes to Halo 2.

Damnit... I just wanted the entire HD collection on 360.. lol
Although regular Halo 2 XBOX disc plays fine on 360. (This is the game that gave my first 360 the Red Ring of Death!!! :( )

I'm fairly sure the game itself didn't kill your console. Probably just a coincidence that it died at the same time. Though you might argue that the emulation meant the CPU was running hotter than normal, so the flawed cooling failed.

So people are cheering for a re re re release of a game. They guy screams we are bringing the same halo as 10 years ago and everyone screams in excitement. I've lost faith in humanity...

there are people that actually enjoyed the Halo series. I never played Halo so I obviously don't get the excitement for it.

Well I guess just like Hollywood the game industry is turning into the same crappy industry, re releasing the same stuff over and over again:-)

It's not exactly the same. It's the first time we get to play the H2 maps on XBL. And they're all packaged up into the same UI with beefed up graphics. Rerelease or not, I'm not going to complain about 100 maps in one package. Going to be a ton of fun.

Really ? re-release a bunch of old games, that's how they're going to fix that embarrassment that's the XBone ? what a joke ...

How exactly is it embarrassing? It's doing pretty well.

1. nobody is buying it
2. it's bad on so many levels (i have listed some of the annoyances in a previous post)

usability is so bad it actually makes me angry every time i'm trying to use it. i have no word to describe how irritating this thing is.
Games are meh.
Entertainment is inexistant.

Nobody except the 4+million that have already bought it?

And the rest are just your opinion and not really true at all.

OK i'm not the best judge on games as i'm not a massive gamer - so far i have titanfall and wolfenstein and both are really average. people may disagree, lets move on.
Entertainment (remember we are not talking "just" a console here, but a "vision" for the 3rd screen) : 6 months after launch there is still virtually no app available, in the UK it's just 4OD and amazon prime. and that's it. XBox video is pretty bad.
It's not capable of playing videos from a NAS or similar.
It's basically useless as an entertainment device

Now how can you say this thing is usable ?
it's super slow, i spend most of the time watching a spinning circle
some of the onscreen text and menus are so small i struggle to read them from my couch, but there are *loads* of black space all around (i have a fairly standard 1080p 55inch TV)
you have to launch an app ("the my games and apps" app) to see your apps ?
Seeing your profile launches an app, then if you want your achievements it's another app ? it's *insane*
Everything is an "app" yet the store has nothing to offer and a full 6 months after it's been on retail there's still no SDK available

the xbone needs a full redesign of the whole experience urgently - they will never reach to anyone else than hardcore gamers with that mess.
remember they are supposedly looking at capturing the market the 3rd screen with that.

Interesting, so MS should keep coming up with bad products ?
Forget any usability concerns, just make some random stuff and try to sell it to whoever is insane enough to buy it and not complain ?
I'm sorry but i love MS and most of their products, and it's a pain to me when they release something as poor as the XBone

Just like QQ'ing, "no one is buying it" except you obviously

the rest, well it's barely even worth replying to you

First off, I don't think the XB1 is nearly as bad as you try to make it out to be, as a matter of fact I don't thinks it's a bad console at all. Besides a couple of Kinect issues, I really don't see what you're complaining about.

Please elaborate more specifically about what you have a problem with on the XB1, instead of making a general complaint with no substance. I'm very curious to know what you see as a problem, and please don't go and copy a bunch of internet complaints, let's hear the one's specific to you.

Yeah, because Halo was the ONLY thing they showed at the conference.... get a grip dude. And as others have said, it's far from an embarrassment. It's sold more in it's lifespan than the Xbox 360 did in the same time. It's just not doing as well as the PS4... but it hasn't even been out a year yet. There's plenty of time to catch up.

Got it for free at //build/ but wouldnt have bought it otherwise.
So it's not worth replying to the lack of features and poor design, i guess am right then, a media center that cant read videos from a nas IS a worthless piece of number 2.
(plus all the other stuff i mentioned in the post above)

True, they announced a bunch of other games, anything really good ? Didnt see any as far as im concerned ! Is there anything that got you excited that i could have overlooked ?

Dude did you actually see the post that is literally above your first ? Maybe our posts crossed. I dont think it can be qualified as a general complaint but instead lists some very specific points which are very personal to me. Maybe i had unrealistic expectations but the xbone has only been a succession of disappointments to me since it has been announced last year.

I would say sell it and get a PS4, but I think you already have a PS4. ^^

No i dont ! I just want MS and the xbox to rock.
And i really think there was a potential for the initial vision but the whole thing has been executed poorly. I am convinced (maybe am wrong) that there is a market for a media & entertainment device for the general public which i hoped ms would address. Instead they released a game console that tries to do that role as well and at the end of the day doesnt do anyhting properly and is expensive.
I had hopes for example that some crazy rumors would be true, like a simple super cheap set top box / dvr / media center / casual gaming machine relying mostly on windows and the windows app ecosystem, potentially with Kinect support for family entertainment, and that that box could be beefed up by an optional additional module with heavy cpu/gpu resources that would bring hardcore gaming capability.
One can dream !

Although I, at first, disturbed by dopydope comments, I have came to agreements to him.

1st. I disgust Sony (ever since last E3 only though). Microsoft Student Partner for 3 years and mostly develop on .NET. I have an X1, Surface, my Lumia. So that qualifies me as a hardcore Microsoft fan just any of you are.

2nd. I agree with dopydope. Xbox One is a convoluted mess. The experience isn't as the same par with a Windows Phone. It's not too terribly slow, but I seriously appreciate it if it's any faster. Kinect misses too often. The whole thing is ambitious, but it has delivered nothing more than had-fulfilled promises.

3rd. Apps are almost non-existent. But I think this takes a little more time. I was expecting to see they open up X1 for devs this E3 but they didn't. So I guess it's BUILD.

Just... hang on we still have to see which celebrity Microsoft hired this year!

They seem to have the right people now in charge and making the changes (unpopular with some on neowin) to reflect the current gaming market / options the majority of consumers want. Sony's PS3 launch was a disaster but they recovered and pretty ended up closely tied with MS and the 360.

Such a shock that you didn't like it LMM /s

I, on the other hand, absolutely loved most of the stuff they showed. I've been waiting for a way to have all my Halo games on one console now for quite some time and loved that part. Sunset Overdrive looked pretty slick and fun, as did most everything else they showed.

Of course :)

Anyway, I don't think Halo 3 and 4 will be remastered too much... probably just new hud and menu images, scaled to fit on 1080p and at 60fps. If you watch the trailer, it explicitly mentions that Halo: CE and Halo 2 will be "anniversary" games, but mentions Halo 3 and 4 without the moniker.

Of course 3 and 4 won't have the moniker, this year is the 10th anniversary of Halo 2, and there already is an anniversary edition of Halo CE, regardless of visual updates, 3 and 4 won't be called "Anniversary"

Now, here's hoping they make a Season two of Halo 4 Spartan Ops as a lead up to Halo 5's release

Sraf said,

I think that would be Halo Nightfall. It was mentioned that events happening here are to lead to Halo 5.

My point is that yes, while they have been upscaled and ported to the Xbox One, they will not be full remakes like Halo 2: Anniversary will be.
