Microsoft offers $44.6 billion for Yahoo

Microsoft Corp. is offering $44.6 billion in cash and stock for search engine operator Yahoo Inc. in a move to boost its competitive position in the online services market.

The unexpected announcement Friday comes as Microsoft, the world's biggest software company, seeks new ways to compete more effectively against the search and online advertising powerhouse Google Inc.

Are there not a whole bunch of Anti-trust issues here to consider?

MS 'expansion' should be halted, with them being told just to concentrate on properly maintaining their current business.

If Yahoo! was a predominatley software-based company, like Microsoft, then there would be Anti-Trust issues - but both company's combined would still have a smaller market share than Google, so I can't see it being that much of a problem.

Yahoo mail is good, so is Live Mail. About the messengers, i prefer WLM over YM.

i think this will benefit the search engines more than anything else.

to all MS bashers: lol

for all the people bashing microsoft their hotmail service is fine and their portal isn't all that bad however i do agree their search isn't the best yet again i dont use yahoo's search either i prefer google for that. I don't see how this can be a bad thing. everyone I know uses MSN messenger anyways

It would be a wrong Idea to fight with google by this way! yahoo is not SMALL! it may take several years for them to be completely merged! meanwhile all of yahoo customers will join google too! I might be one of them! Nevertheless, I Wish this would never happen cause I love YAHOO And I Hate damn MSN, hotmail, Live , Dead ...!

Why would people switch, it's not like Yahoo is going to go offline or start killing people during the transition, and to be fair you don't know what the transition would be yet anyway. People who think it would just be turned into MSN need to really step back and think a minute. Would Microsoft pay 44 billion just to turn Yahoo into something they already have? I think they're just a bit smarter than that.

When I heard about this I started cracking up. An interesting offer. I wonder how it will turn out?

And what will Google's next move be?

If Microsoft bought Yahoo, this will never do any change. Same thing happened when Google bought Youtube. Youtube is still the same and with its own name and branding. I guess, the same thing will happen to yahoo. But maybe Yahoo and Live search will merge, or both will learn from their pros and cons. Anyway, I guess it is a good move for Microosft, and this will hopefully create some critical changes to the way we use search engines in the futures. Yahoo Search and Live Search need each others to fight Google.

You must work for Microsoft, because just about everyone else see this for what it is, and what it will end up being. It's a blatant attempt to seize control of the Internet, and it will end up being a complete waste of money, time, and a perfectly good url, because MS will wreck it just like they wrecked Hotmail, MSN, and pretty much anything they lay hands on these days. Live is a bust, Vista is a bust, and they can't seem to understand that their heavy-handed methods just flat do not work.

Let's hope the DOJ doesn't allow this; and if they do, I'll be swapping my email to gmail.

Dont do it! Someone needs to stand up to Google and Microsoft

Hopefully the FTC will block this, but I doubt it.

If MS buys Yahoo, I'm canceling my Yahoo accounts.

How dare you bring logic into this! Microsoft is evil and they eat babies! If Microsoft buys Yahoo thousands of cute little puppies will die.

No, really I enjoy the Microsoft bashers. They make me laugh.

Damn, I knew MS had money, but to be able to throw that much at one company...wow. I'm actually quite impressed

How do you turn down that kind of money?

EU's going to know that MS has 44 Billion on hand and come up with another excuse to pilfer.... :disappointed:

Here comes "Windows Live Yahoo".

RIP Yahoo, we hardly knew you.

You must be young.... back a few years ago when we wanted fake pictures of Christina Applegate we only had 1 place to look... Yahoo

OMG, please no... :-(

I don't want even larger mergers here. :(

I'm afraid Flickr will die and we'd get a browser incompatible Siverlight "enhanced" Windows Live Photo Gallery 2010 instead. Argh. This makes me a bit nervous.

why 44.6 :S 45 to make it simple... or they didnt have that much in cash lol...

How many money trucks would that take walking into yahoo.... *thinks*

Should be intresting... MS will then own 2 of the 3 main search engines...

http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=YHOO Yahoo shares already start to climb (29.43 Up 10.25 (53.44%) )

When talking billions, you don't round off figures to "make it simple". Rounding 44.6 to 45 would be giving away an extra $400,000,000. Thats a lot of money to give up to just "make it simple".

That said, part of me really wants to see this deal go through as it would have an interesting effect on the market. The other part of me thinks this would put too much power in Microsofts hands and that can't be a good thing. I would rather Google buy Yahoo.

I love Yahoo's mail. Please don't turn Yahoo's mail into Hotmail. :(

+1. This was my biggest worry when I heard the announcement.

As far as the price they are paying, why do any of you care? It's Microsoft's money and the yahoo shareholders are going to benefit the most from this high price. And a lot of mutual funds will probably benefit a little bit too.

I fricken hate "@hotmail". Now all of those ppl that has Yahoo account will have to click on "Hotmail" to go to their Yahoo mail.

Ummm... They could do so much other things with that kind of money... :ponder:

But they can gain little more after they buy yahoo...

At least so they hope. It's a bet though. It may not bear much fruit too, for example if they still fail building a Google competitor, on the other hand.
