Microsoft planning major announcement for June 18th

Microsoft has just sent out an invitation to an event and to use their terms, "This will be a major Microsoft announcement – you will not want to miss it.". While the details are slim at this point, Microsoft certainly has something major to announce on June 18th.

There is very little information to go on but a couple things to keep in mind. Microsoft is holding a Windows Phone developer conference later that week so it could be Windows Phone 8 related or it could be related to Windows 8, possibly the announcement of the RTM. We would be surprised if Microsoft would create this much noise to only announce the RTM of Windows 8, but anything is possible as we don't have much information to go on.

There is a lot of noise on Twitter about what the announcement could be but it is all speculation at this point. Just to toss around a couple of ideas (this is pure speculation) it could be Office for iPad, Windows 8 release date, strategic partnership with RIM, or even a free pony for all Windows Phone users. Your guess is as good as ours and we will bring your more information as soon as we get clarification from Microsoft.

AllthingsD has just penned up a post that claims it is for Microsoft to push Windows RT tablets. That's right, the conference will be all about Microsoft's tablets and their strategy with Windows RT. Is this correct? Well, it's the only thing we have to go on at this point, stay tuned.

I think its something surrounding windows phone. The folks at the windows phone booth at teched last week said there was going to be a big annoucement around Windows Phone...this fits the time line.

It's probably kinect integration at launch in Windows 8 and it's hardware. They need kinect to step in for all the non-touchscreen users going to 8.

Public beta of Office 13, Windows RT discussion and possibly a Windows Phone 8 demo - That's what I think anyway!

Maybe they will provide a free version of Windows 8 like Visual Studio Express, only capable of running metro applications with limited capabilities. It will be something similar to Chrome Os but for offline and cloud applications.

windows 8 really lack of customization and it's truly crazy because you have over half a billion of user using windows OS. YES! i'm talking about the metro, and iPad at least give user the option to change the wallpaper.

One more thing, you kill the aero glass and the new theme look like design for kids and doesn't look fresh and modern. A little piece of advise, give user the option to choose or face a severe consequences with substantial user will definitely complain like it's the end of the world. DAMN IT!

Tablets available for summer! And all Intel Win 8 boxes to ship with Kleenex for the post DOS era tech posers who can't deal with change.

Windows RT Release Date?
New WindowRT Tablet from NOKIA ?
WindowsPhone 8 Release Date?
Microsoft buying NOKIA?
Steven Sinofsky new CEO of Microsoft?

Whatsoever... i saved the Date.. ;-)

The thinking that it's about Windows RT tablets sounds right to me, we've only been seeing Windows 8 x86 tablets and convertibles so far, no one has actually even really used an ARM tablet yet. They've always been behind some glass or with bodyguards saying look but don't touch.

So, Windows RT tablets and the services they will come with them.

A MS branded Windows RT tablet? That would be pretty interesting...not out of the question either, really

Wish List:

Buying Nokia

Buying Onlive - if games saves are stored in the cloud then players could stream all games (even PC or original Xbox) over the 3 screens (desktop, phone/tablet, console)

Buying Leap Motion - combined with Kinect this would make for an awesome input device

Probably none of these though.....

My immediate thought was Windows 8 RTM launch.... but just throwing another idea out there - something Kinect-related perhaps? I know there's been lots of research & development in this field recently, i.e:

Kinect used by surgeons in new UK research project:
http://www.neowin.net/news/kin...-in-new-uk-research-project

Kinect to be used in satellite docking system:
http://www.neowin.net/news/kin...in-satellite-docking-system

Microsoft creates Kinect-based solution for hearing impaired:
http://www.neowin.net/news/mic...lution-for-hearing-impaired

...and so forth... so I wonder if they've got some "big" Kinect news?!

Well I'll be satisfied with Windows 8 news, but what I really want to hear is information on Windows Phone 8.

True, but that should happen on the 20th, so not that far off really.

i don't think it will anything related to windows phone 8 they could save the money and announce it in june 20 conference so it could something related to a partnership with a company or buying a company

even that considered a waste of money to make a conference so its windows related news

2 weeks after E3? Nah.

Would be a surprise for Sony? I noticed that in their keynote at E3 they said only Xbox - not Xbox 360. Every logo was plain Xbox. Launching an Xbox using the Windows 8 kernel or with Windows Runtime Support would be a big deal.

I love the new Metro design language and all it brings to the platform. I believe that most of the complainers are complaining simply to complain.

That being said, THAT was funny.

It's probably the official announcement for the major release of all their products later this. This will be their biggest year, updating all their products and streamlining them around the same time. So it makes sense they announce the major changes happening.

Windows, Windows Phone, Office 2013, Xbox, Microsoft account, Hotmail, SkyDrive, and more. The New Microsoft.

Microsoft has developed an artificial intelligence that can automatically remove Windows 8/Metro complainers comments from my screen before I have to read them.

Take all my money!

And thus begins Skynet's war. First it sees win8/metro complainer comments as what to remove. Then it moves on to all comments before launching the nukes to remove all of the complainers forever.

Windows Phone 8 is not off course, it's right on course as planned.

Who knows.. might be same as Apple's last WWDC
People were expecting an iPhone 5.. or a "revolutionary" iOS 6
But all they announced is a new hardware with minimal updates and features called iOS 6..

I would say putting a 2880x1800 resolution screen on a 15" laptop is a bit more than a "minimal" update. That's a higher resolution than the hi-res 27" monitors on the market these days; that's impressive, and I look forward to the shockwaves that this sets off throughout the PC, and, more importantly to me, the monitor industry.

People should not have been expected an iPhone 5 release at the most recent event. As for iOS 6, that was a bit of a weak release, just like iOS 5 was a bit of a weak release.

WWDC was big. Very big. Apple dropped a bomb on the entire PC industry. It only took them a single presentation to make the rest of the industry look like they were several years behind. That new MacBook Pro makes other laptops look like GameBoys.

During the installation process: (1) The Metro UI can be disabled, (2) The traditional desktop with Start button are displayed upon startup. [These initial settings can be changed via Control Panel attributes later on, if desired.)

Not going to happen. (No reason for it either).

(1) Uninformed users will block themselves from an entire ecosystem because something is "new" and "weird." (2) Why would you even upgrade?

As a developer, I have found that most people are afraid of change in their software simply because they are used to the way that things already are. It does not matter how terrible it already is: they do not want to rock the boat. The iPad is wildly successful because it's simple. You don't hit Start and hope that your app's installer was smart enough to put it in the list. You find the app that does the task that you want, and then you use it and close it. That's what our desktops should be doing for us too. People are just afraid to change because they think that they will lose the power of their old desktop.

That power will still exist in Windows 8. You will just get to it differently, and, in theory, more quickly. This is the reason that Windows 8 is so powerful. It provides the speed and flexibility of a mobile OS, while providing the power of the desktop OS when you need it, or even just when you want it. The Start button is redundant, and that's why it won't be coming back from Microsoft.

Change is not always bad, and I suspect that the majority of haters have only seen Windows 8 rather than actually having used it.

Bravo! You couldn't be more right. Windows 8 is an amazing OS and will make life so much simpler once it's released and people give it a chance.

Announcing that they have cancelled developing windows 8... and are starting over, will be releasing a new OS in 2 years.

Why would they do that? Windows 8 is such a good and innovative product after all.

Maybe delayed rather than cancelled. It is innovating in a way, but not in a good way IMO.

Could it be that they've finally seen sense and have dumped Metro or have seen sense and decided not to charge extra for things that were already included in Windows 7 (Media Center for example)

Not only nice, but smart.

Metro is awesome and the best thing that will have happened to Microsoft because of what it brings across all platforms. Dumping those features that weren't used by most and lowering the price to reflect it isn't charging extra.

Hmmm, cant think of what this might be, but hopefully it lives up to the invitation. Shouldnt be WP since thats a few days later. Maybe some new integration stuff in Win8

Windows 8 release date?? :0

nah, thats not a big announcement.

Not to be outdone by Apple's cheap OS upgrade path, instead Microsoft will be announcing FREE upgrades of existing Windows 7 product keys, converting them to Windows 8 keys for the first few months of release.

Perhaps a marriage announcement- Microsoft has been blowing HTML 5 so much that it's probably time they finally get shacked up.

HAHAHAHAHAHAH! I love MS but that was legitimately funny.
