Microsoft releases an MMORPG, names it after Neowin

Microsoft, in a surprisingly stealthy move, has launched a free to play, browser based MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role playing Game) called Neosaurs. While we can’t guarantee that Microsoft didn’t use Neowin as an inspiration for their latest efforts in the gaming realm, one never really knows, right? According to ZDnet, Microsoft is spreading word of the game through the basic social networking channels, with Twitter and Facebook being understandably hammered with social advertising for the game.

Neosaurs is a 2D RPG, and it looks it takes a lot of inspiration from Namco’s popular “Tales” series of RPGs. It is being developed in a partnership with Camelot Media Investments (CMI), a big name in the casual MMORPG industry. The game is currently in beta, and you can get a free account to play with a Windows Live or Facebook account.

This release, while not revolutionary, has some interesting aspects to it that are worth mentioning. First, it shows that Microsoft wants a chunk of the casual online gaming space that startups like Zynga have come to dominate. It also shows that Microsoft is willing to outsource development of such content to achieve that goal. Finally, it shows the new partnership between Facebook and Microsoft showing its face in something other than search. It should be seen as no coincidence that you can’t get an account with, say, your Google credentials.

Neon, oh wait, that was named after eon, a long time thefore Neo-win was aptly named, awaiting a long time for good news

Misleading title, even if you were joking. As a news editor come on now...
'Neo' is a prefix meaning new, young, fresh, recent. Those dinosaurs look like they're targeting children so I'll go with "young" as the meaning in this instance..

And i suppose NeoWin is named after the kernel hack Keanu Reeves used in the first movie when he rebooted himself at the end.

Very annoying, installed Flash for Firefox at least 2 or 3 times, still won't load any of the in-game flash whatevers when I click on the statues. *shrug*

I would have expected a Microsoft game to use Silverlight... Not Flash :-/

Might be fun though, I'll give it a try.

Yeah, first thing I noticed.. Silverlight would've been awesome.

Na, by using Flash they can be sure to keep the iUser crowd from annoying the other players.

Microsoft is not anti-Flash, nor do they see Silverlight as a direct competitor to Flash.

Windows Live Messenger still uses Flash for sending animated winks/greetings, and a majority of the games on Zone, MSN Games, now Live Games are Flash based and have been for years.

WP7 has promised Flash support, and it would seem it will be more than just a Browser plugin, something like Adobe Air, but with a bit more WP7 specific support for games and other online Flash content.

I love most of those games. Haven't beat Vesperia yet, but Symphonia, Legendia, and Abyss were all great. Phantasia... not so much. I would probably play this if it had resemblance to the gameplay style of the Tales series, but this is an MMO, so it's probably only inspiration from graphics/character models.

I love NeoSoul. Great music
or even Neo Hip Hop music. The more progressive stuff unlike the crap that's push by corporations.

wonder is this will be the type of game we see on xbox.com, facebook and bing? it would be nice to be able to play on my 360/pc/windows phone as well

Personally I'd like to see Project S, that's Age of Empires Online, on Windows Phone!!!!

I gave it a shot. Will have to try later.

Thank you for your interest in Neosaurs!"

O_O that's... surprising considering how closely I follow the casual mmo space I hadn't heard anything about this.
Neowin has spies all over the world.

Maybe Neowin should copyright the name, and then licence it to Microsoft?

Hmm, more likely MS copyrights the name then slaps Neowin around a bit.

I smell a lawsuit!
Yeah. Since gaming is something new to Microsoft and Microsoft is hiring other company to write their game, I betcha that in the near future, many MMO industry will file complaints about copyright infringements.

Obviously.

By the way. You know what else is named after Neowin? Neo-Nazism.

I was being sarcastic. I think it is silly to assume or think that just because it has NEO in the name, that is has anything to do with this site.

I was being sarcastic too. And why ruin a good "title", when the two names got nothing in common except that they both start with "neo"?

What about NeoPlanet, that weird IE-with-a-coat-of-new-paint browser from the 90's?

thats brilliant

Is it? Reeeeaaaallly? Pupiks supposedly (?) sarcastic comment was not intelligent enough to come across in such a manner. Your attempt at sarcasm was even worse (hope you weren't actually serious after all). Sorry. "Zing!!" as some would apparently say in the USA....
