Microsoft releases beta version of Bing Desktop

We have already seen how Bing handles search features for products like Windows Phone and more recently the Xbox 360. Now Microsoft has released a beta version of the newly revealed Bing Desktop (via Windows Observer). The small 1.4 MB download offers users a stand alone Bing search bar that first appears in the center of the desktop screen when installed.

The Bing Desktop help page gives more information about its features. They include having the image of the day on the Bing.com home page become your desktop wallpaper. The wallpaper changes every day when the Bing.com front page image changes.

The Bing Desktop bar can also be placed on top of the screen when you go into its Settings. Once there, the search bar can also be moved from side to side with your mouse cursor.

Aside from being able to use the Bing Desktop as an alternative to using the Bing.com site, that's pretty much it as far as features. However, this is still a beta release so it's more than possible that Microsoft has some plans to add more options in the coming weeks and months.

"At this time, it can only be utilized to the primary monitor that your CPU is currently connected to. "

Makes it sooo much harder to use when the bing bar is locked to my main display

Yea I know, I have 10 displays, and my main one is the furthest one away >

I like it, got mine pinned to the top, prefer it there rather than smack in the middle. Though I now have a large Hawkmoth on my screens....

2 photos a week Considering bing updates daily

That's odd; I have the dynamic one at home and all three screens show different photos every day

Then just edit the RSS XML from the theme to update it daily.

As you may know, the app has just been released recently and the Bing Desktop grows, more features will be added to it, this is all usually based on customer feedback, like the feedback you are submitting to me now. I have good news though; I am tracking your request and sending it to the product team for consideration. Using this feedback from our customers helps the Product team make decisions about feature implementation.
We appreciate and value your time in providing this feedback. It is feedback like this that will drive improvements in this product.

Is Microsoft natively integrating Bing with Windows 8? If not, they should! and release/support it better outside the US. That should increase Bing's marketshare

What do you mean by integrating natively bing into Windows?
If you want to use the web search engine, you can use the charm bar, which will open your default web browser with its default search engine if it's a metro apps (this isn't 100% correct, but you got the idea).

Hmmm, requires Windows 7 apparently.

I wouldn't mind so much if I was running that right now and not Windows 8 Consumer Preview.

I think with Windows 8 if you login with a live ID that it should (dunno if it does or not but it'd be possible) to pull down the bing image of the day as your desktop wallpaper without the need of a second app to do the job.

I was actually referring to the Bing Desktop search bar app, not the live wallpapers.

Daily background wallpapers are in 1900*1200; not bad!
If you want the daily wallpaper in your login/lock screen, you should use mouse without borders, which is made by MSFT too : getsatisfaction.com/mouse_without_borders/topics/private_builds

Their typo, not mine. And this US only policy sucks.

Apparently works outside US
