Microsoft set to release Windows Live Essentials 2011 later today

Microsoft is set to release the final version of Windows Live Essentials later today, Neowin has learnt.

The complete package comes just over a month after a beta refresh was issued on August 17. Microsoft originally released a Windows Live Essentials beta on June 24. Essentials includes the popular programs Windows Live Movie Maker, Mail, Messenger, Writer, Sync, and Family Safety. The Windows Live team has aimed to ensure that the next version of Windows Live Essentials takes advantage of Windows 7 fully. All applications now use the new ribbon UI and integrate further into Windows 7 by using Jumplists. Windows Live Sync is also included which keeps your files synchronized on the web and across multiple PCs.

Microsoft also introduced several new features for Windows Live Photo Gallery, including photo fusing to blend photos together and improved facial recognition. Expect the final version to land around 10AM PST.

All you have to do once the installer launches is choose "Custom install". From there you can install only what you want/need.

Does this mean we will be using Live Sync like the Live Mesh of old where we can log into it and copy over files and folders in the similar way that Live Mesh did it?

I hope this fixes the crashing problem for me. At random times when I launch Live Mail it will simply crash and have to restart it. It does this on all four of my computers that are all runnng Win 7 64 bit.

I really wish Messenger Plus Live would work on other WLM clients, they are getting more and more bloated.
Also, I'm doubting it but I'm REALLY hoping they added nicknames again, I really don't like having everyone's full name there, it's just so boring lol.

How do you mean? I can rename people even with the current beta.

Display name I meant lol, couldn't think of the word haha.

I like to customise things the way I like it, and that is a way of customising my WLM, why would they get rid of such a feature. It's been around since as long as I've had MSN/WLM .

I hope i can choose Nickname because if people are not forced to update, then peoples Nicknames showen in the new WLM 2011 will be random names and not there real names because they, will be running an older version of Messenger and won't bother changing there First and Last Name.

Does it bother anyone else that these articles use the word "learnt?" Everytime I see it, it drives me bonkers. That word is not used in the US ever, it sounds bad.

So what? The site is not for US residents only.

Some people in Neowin team are in UK. I don't see a problem.

On top of that the US is the only former colony of the UK that uses different spelling rules in English.

So? I have some friends from other country who spell it same way.. I am not complaining about it. If you don't like it, ask the staff to fix the word in the article if that bother you that much.

How do you mean? "Learnt" is considered correct in all commonwealth countries. I have no problems with that. It is only Canada and the US that would consider it incorrect.

I was having tons of issues with Add to list invitations not reaching the other person and vice-versa. Also while not being able to change your MSN nickname sounds great in theory, it fails hard. If I log into Messenger from my phone and then go back to the Desktop, a name that I used ages ago mysteriously shows up as a my new Messenger name. I have to open a browser and change my name again there. That is the only thing I hate about the new Messenger and I seriously hope they changed this behavior.

I hope the issues with both messenger and live mail are fixed.

Messenger does not login properly, windows live mail still checks for mail even when it says it's finished to name two.

I hope issues with Windows Live Mail are fixed. For the most part in the beta it worked fine for me, it was just that it had an issue when starting up along side other programs.

This is a pretty big surprise, and a welcome one. I used photogallery beta all day long yesterday, and what a monster difference it made. Got my project done in half the time of the old one. Now Movie Maker beta had some serious issues with preview and playback choppyness. I will be really curious to see if they fixed that.

Will this auto-update in some fashion? Via WU, or the client itself? Or will I have to manually download the update once it's out?

Don't get me wrong, I love WLM and all but few months ago I found out about Trillian 5 and never looked back. If Microsoft can somehow resolve the conflict between them and Twitter and actually implement it into WLM like Trillian does, I'll be glad to make the switch back over. But until then, I'm sticking with Trillian 5.

Until the recent versions of Messenger allow one-way webcam again, I'm not upgrading from 14.0.8089.726

Yeah no kidding, I mean that was just a stupid move on their part. Their excuse was so they could concentrate on quality with only a single feature. When you go into video chat it doesn't allow you to unselect yours or the other parties, you even have to disable your mic if you don't want to use it. They need to bring back the one-way webcam, I've been using the beta - i like it cause of the extra's but those extra's at the expense of losing this feature sucks.

I do hope they did bring a compromise for the nicknames in WLM. None of my friends and neither was I excited about it. And at least warn that full name is visible to everyone...

Will we be able to install select programs without being forced up update other? ie: install WLMail but leave WLMessenger alone?

Aaabsolutely not.

No, you must remove/update all previous WL apps or it will refuse to install (I know I've tried!).

What is it with Microsofts new one Beta, one RC then RTM approach? I tried the Beta refresh and it was bit buggy, I hope they aren't rushing things.

I'm sure that internally many many more builds were used and tested thoroughly. Microsoft has no real commercial reason to release it early - in fact they didn't even announce a deadline - so I think it's safe to presume on release it'll be as solid as .0 releases can be.

I moved away from WLM a few months ago given the new version seems just way too bloated. The Photo Gallery update will come in handy though.

I had a feeling it was coming very soon... Steven Sinofsky just updated his Facebook profile image to a Windows Live Essentials logo. The day before the Internet Explorer 9 launch, he updated it to the IE9 logo.

I cannot see why everyone hates the advertisements so much, its a free messenger but Microsoft needs to make some revenue from it.

Just use resource hacker to edit the dlls and remove the ads

True, but those of us that are not going to ever click them may as well save some resources and remove them.

I'm fairly certain Microsoft gets revenue based on the amount of clicks and views, not just clicks. Essentially when using A-Patch to remove the advertisements you are hurting the development of the Instant Messaging Client.

If their ads were simple banner ads, I think most of us would happily put up with them. Unfortunately Microsoft have had to take them too far and now use flash ads that enlarge and pop out when you mouse over them. Be slightly careless where you mouse pointer goes, and you've got a huge ad-box showing video, sounds, etc. HIGHLY annoying.

Ad Muncher removes the ads in WLM

Dropbox is OK, but with Office 2010 and now full Essentials 2011, Sync will be a lot easier since I can use my Skydrive as a network drive connection. Speed is OK, but I'm more interested in reliability - Live Sync (Not to be confused with the 5GB of Skydrive Sync through Live 2011) only lets you sync a total of 20,000 files that do not go over a 4gb total. Perfect for pictures and the lighter stuff. Drop box is cool because it has multiple platform support, but all you have to do is point your Dropbox share to your default sync share and voila-cross platform synchronization. MS SyncToy is also good for reliable sync and you can point it to your Skydrive network drive also. Many options. MS has gotten serious about the cloud and it's cool that 2010 is the year of the cloud as a means of keeping organized across all the devices you use. Plus, I cannot wait for 2011 Essentials, when running will replace Live Mesh's ability to remote into the PC via the web.

Can you copy folders now because this has always been missing in the past but is essential for me. I've considered using skydrive for online backup of my photos in the past but without folder support I can't use it.

By the way ahhell, I have nearly 20,000 photos to backup

Maybe I don't understand what you are talking about, but right now Sync will sync folders, including new ones you create on one machine, and create them on the other machine.

I hope they don't force an update. I'd quite like to keep the option to have a nickname and to send / recieve webcam without doing a video call.

I got tired of endelss waiting for MS Live Sync (the main feature I was looking forward to) and found Dropbox instead. It even has an Android version which I love.
Other apps from Live Essentials are quite OK I guess, will be installing them in any case.

Don't worry..I don't about Android but Windows Phone 7 will have Live Mesh support n u will love it.

Agreed about Dropbox, which has native (!) clients on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iPhone, iPad, hell Blackberry too!

They already have.
I thought they only did for the Web Messenger in Hotmail? But it would be in the next WLM release, so, the final.

Cool I'm loving Windows Live Sync, great how MS made a Mac client as well. Hopefully the final build of WLM 2011 is better though, the current beta version still needs some work. The other apps I use in the WL family seem fairly solid already, so should be all good!

Please, check back here after you test the final WLM and share what you saw about if the "needed work" has been done or not.

It's a great idea but it's useless to me because it doesn't support XP. Sure I have Win7 on my desktop but at work I'm stuck with an XP laptop and no ability to upgrade it. Instead I have to stick to Dropbox. There's no technical reason to not support XP. This is just Microsoft being awkward for the sake of it.

To those using IE9 Beta, take note that Windows Live Essentials 2011 has issues with it when running Windows Live ID Sign-In Assistant.

Although I have only had IE9 open for ~30 minutes I didn't notice a problem

sadly its not my case, I've been trying it since beta 1 and, still sometimes make all of my friends to appear as offline, and Although I just love the new interface, I don't like that I had to go online to post a message to my offline friends, nor the fact that the option of appearing online to just someone its kind of tricky cause in my case once I decided to appear online to the rest, I literally appear online to everyone including the people I had previously blocked...I seriously doubt the final solves those issues, but I'll give it a try again.

I have had an issue with it. It is just fine and dandy on my desktop, but on my netbook, when it gets disconnected from the Internet (sleep, hibernation), Windows Live Messenger will "reconnect" to the Messenger services, but it will not allow me to send messages to anyone, because it says "Could not send the following message to all recipients: [My Message]" and there is only one other person in the conversation.

But when I restart the program, it's just fine, but that's annoying. But for now I have switched to Pidgin, but it doesn't notify me when there are new people online, which is stupid.
