Microsoft sold 8 million Kinects in 60 days; blows away the iPad

On Thursday, Microsoft announced its second quarter earnings, with a record of $19.95 billion. The software giant also posted its highlights of the year, one of them being the amount of Xbox 360 Kinect units sold.

Microsoft reported that Kinect sold 8 million units in just 60 days, far exceeding the company's goal. Microsoft lived up to its goal when they announced back in September that Kinect will "blow away" iPad sales.

It took Apple 28 days to sell the first million iPads, and the first three million in 80 days, which is far less than Microsoft's 8 million in 60 days. In terms of availability, the iPad was launched in the United States first, before being made available in nine more countries a month later. Although the two products are very different, they are in a very unique market for mobile computing and controller-less gaming.

The Kinect for Xbox 360 has made a big impact on the market, even selling faster than PlayStation 3's Move. Kinect turns your Xbox 360 intro a controller-less gaming system, allowing for the user to control the game with their hands and body, without the need to hold or wear any peripherals.

The Apple Dumplings didn't make any logical comparison when they were fapping about the iPad being the fastest-selling tech gadget ever.

The author is just shoving it right back into their faces.

maybe if they compared it to something similar to kinect say something like the WII as the iPad and kinect are after two totally different audiences can you take a kinect on a train and watch a video on the way to work NO see 2 totally diffeent markets

Tablets cannot do real work. A friend couple of mine recently bought android tablets and within 2 months they are selling them. She prefers her vaio laptop and he wants a new home built super desktop.

As much as I love my own super desktop, I'm selling my laptop for a tablet later this year when the next-gens come out. For travel and comfort, a tablet is just the simpler choice. A wide selection of very usable apps, the direction new development is headed in so a good platform to be a part of, and oh yeah: no panicking about accidentally covering up a vent because you want to get comfortable.

But that's all there is to it. Tablets are for people who laze around online every now and then, and for people who travel. Laptops are for people who do work, or who want to do desktop computing without dedicating an entire workspace to the hardware. At this point, desktops are for workstations, serious gaming, and hobbyists who feel dirty at the mere suggestion of buying something pre-built.

One of my friends is the biggest iPad fan you could imagine, and they have also looked at Android tablets as awesome.

However when it comes doing anyting outside of playing with a few apps, or watching media, they grab their netbook. This often includes web browsing because of the vast performance difference and site compatibility.

Apple and Google are both messing up when it comes to performance.

The iPad CPU/GPU choice and the horrible performance is the kicker for most people. Even browsing the web, a Win7 first generation Netbook loads pages 10-20x faster with IE8 than the iPad. And we are talking a 6hr netbook with 1gb RAM and an Atom 270.

Apple failed to deliver enough computing to make the device more than 'interesting', and if they don't make a big change this will become a fading fad as much as I hate to see it happen.

Not only are the device specifications slow, but their iOS is so not optimized for a device. Their kernel is far bigger than a device needs at this point, and the same is true for Android with its Linux kernel. They are bigger kernels with models that can only be reduced so far.

The contrast is WinCE, which is an OS designed based on some NT model ideas, but leaves out anything that does not fit a device dynamic. This is why the WP7 can pull GPU performance numbers with WinCE and its kernel and driver model that is several times faster than than Android on the same hardware. (Go reference the Qualcomm numbers.) This is why the Snapdragon in the WP7 is not a problem, as Microsoft is getting GPU numbers out of it in the same range as the newer high end chipsets like you will find in some of the impressive Samsungs.

The OS is still a big deal, because the weight of iOS/OSX and Linux scales down fairly well, but not when you are competing against an OS designed for devices. It would be like Microsoft using the bottom layers of NT on the current generation of devices, it would perform well, probably in the same range as Android or iOS, but these devices need a bit less OS overhead, and it makes some significant differences.

In two years or three, it will be less important, but right now, Google and Apple need to shove their hardware up.

Who cares?

Also, isn't this still a little skewed? I mean, the Kinect launched just in time for the holidays and rode its hype right into the season. If the iPad launched at the same time, we might get a better comparison.

Post the news about Windows OS sales loss. I'm sorry to tell you guys but Desktop OSes like Windows are slowwwwly being phased out because the Desktop Computer itself is becoming obsolete.

It's easy to see phones and tablets are the new tech. Personally I plan to always keep a desktop so...I'm too old to care about tablets. =)

Exactly, because people are buying other devices like XBoxes and WP7 phones...
Oh wait, still Windows OS.

Ok, those are not big numbers, but if you think Windows OSes are going away, you have a shifted reality.

For example, millions of cars use Windows OSes (Almost all Ford models now come standard with Sync, with Microsoft logo and everything, running a Windows OS.)

Next factor in the number of computer running Windows, yes it is in the Billions. These are numbers that would take YEARS AND YEARS even at the fastest Android and iPhone sales combined to even put a dent in, let alone overcome.

Who really f==kin cares. What is neowin becoming the mouth piece to whom ever pays them money to run a story? Kinnects are cool and so are Ipads so f==kin what. This site seems to be moving from news to corporate propaganda.Thats cool though have to pay the bills.

Are people really that stupid. They aren't comparing kinect directly to ipad other than they are both tech gadgets. Yes, it would be like apples/oranges, except they are looking at the best fruit in the fruit bowl!!

Read other news articles published on the web that listed the iPad as the fastest selling gadget and look what they compare it to ...DVD players, Blu Ray....they are nothing alike either.

Came for the inevitable rants that the two products shouldn't be compared with each other. Leaving with a satisfied, condescending smirk on my face.

In other news, AST Bearings sell more ball bearings than Lexus sells cars. Lexus must suck, and are surely heading for bankruptcy.

These fanboys make me lose faith in the collective human intelligence level almost as much as Glenn Beck.

Stop grasping for imaginary handholds. Apple pumped their ego saying the iFail was the most revolutionary technology and fastest selling electronic device out there. MS has beaten that claim. If you're gonna start complaining about comparisons now, why not back when Apple did? They took the broad path of comparing to everything out there, regardless of what type of gadget it was. MS now is selling an electronic device faster, and they ACTUALLY MADE SOMETHING NEW, not just an oversized iPod Touch. Get a grip.

Why is it Apple morons go on and on about how every product apple makes is just par none the best thing ever without ever having used alternatives. Also why is it you love buying into a monopolistic culture like lemmings with no mind. Apple is no longer this cool alternative to Microsoft but a huge company that screws its patrons over by releasing pre-obsolescent devices saying you don't need certain features and then releasing those features just 1 year later. The formula is working so well because so many dullards are buying into it. You choose Apple devices over multitudes of other companies and other devices.... dosent that seem a little like you are brainwashed?

You do realise Microsoft fans are just the same.

They were in line to buy the first Xbox on day 1 even though there was only one good launch game which was Halo. The upcoming games was almost all port of PS2 games. The good exclusive games came after there was enough xbox sold for publishers to care.

Most of them bought at least two 360 so far because of the RRoD. It's almost impossible to really know how much people own a 360 since so many people bought two of them.

Fanboys are fanboys. Apple fanboys are not better or worse than MS fanboys. They are all the same.

All those "confused" people out there are Apple Fanboys who will do anything to make Microsoft's success look like an uneducated discussion. They all know that this has nothing to do with fruit, bread, milk, cars etc. These are tech/consumer gadgets that are being compared. Apple claimed that they had the fastest selling tech gadget in history. They don't! Microsoft does. I'm sorry this hurts all you fan boys but when the dust settles ....all of us educated people will see through your uneducated and quite handicaped smoke screens. For those lost.....this is about a claim. Something to be proud of. Microsoft has that and Apple doesn't. Apple fanboys...please cry somewhere else where people actually give a damn. Cry a river somewhere out there where unemployment is high so we can put people to work building a bridge and perhaps you can have credit for doing something good instead of childish.

This is presently the lead contender for "Most Ridiculous Product Comparison" for 2011 so far.
Lets see how the rest of the year goes.

So sick of people comparing two unrelated products. One's $600 and one is $150. One is a controller and the other is a tablet FFS.

As has been stated above, this is about the Kinect outselling the previously fastest selling gadget. So yes, they are related considering the iPad beat out other unrelated products to gain that crown.

I think Microsoft is trying to hide that they are way back in innovation compared to all possible products on the market. This is not the first time they make sutch ridiculous statments. Here are some example titles all over Neowin.net:
Internet Explorer 9 Team: "The wait is almost over!"(from today) - 4 MONTHS FOR NEW TABS!!! GOOGLE MADE SEVERAL THOUSAND NEW BROWSERS FOR THAT TIME
Microsoft: 2 million Windows Phone 7 devices sold, app store support soars - THANK YOU APPLE FOR SHOWING US HOW TO CREATE AN INTUITIVE PHONE OS (SAME FOR PC OS)
^^Kinect - THANKS TO EYETOY YOU SEE THE "REVOLUTIONARY"WAY TO PLAY WITHOUT THE NEED OF PERIPHERIAL DEVICE
Should I go on??....

Last I checked this was a NEOWIN created title not an MS one. Hell MS made the statements awhile back, Neowin and several other sites are just rechurning old news. So why hate on MS?? I the ridiculous statements category...Apple was the one that actually started off when boosting iPad sales figures. Of course we shouldn't forget sales don't actually mean the number of units sold to consumers it simply means the number of units shipped from Apple to their distributors. Not sure if MS calculates sales the same way or not but I'd say they probably do.

Fanboy much? Kinect is far more revolutionary than anything Apple has produced in the last 25 years. You can't even consider Kinect a category changer, which is about the most you can say for the iPhone or the iPad. Kinect is a category creator, and its influence is going to reach well beyond gaming consoles.

Before the "Stylus", after the "touch".......

Btw no, I do not use an iPhne but a HD7. DIfference is my Maitre' a pensee is Voltaire not a distributor of Kool Aid regardless of the brand: Apple or MS, it is the same.

"Copernican revolution"? Those are pretty grandiose words for a phone that wasn't even the first to have a multi-touch screen let alone the first to have a touch screen. Besides, the multi-touch screen didn't do much to how often and when the phone is used. All it did was change what they do when they waste time on a phone. Instead of reading/writing email, browsing the web, or listening to music, which people did relentlessly on their BlackBerries, they now spend more time playing stupid little touch-enabled games.

We are all entitled to our opinion; said that it seems that almost everybody disagree with you, Microsoft first, and they are all adding touch capabilities everywhere.

As for "grandious words" check the effect the iPhone had for Apple and its shareholders...........
A great idea alone is not enough, the way it is implemented makes the difference: Star, developed by Xerox Parc, was not a commercial success but their paradigm of a GUI based on windows, icons and menus was then used for the Macintosh and by Microsoft to create Windows.

Because the iPad was previously the fastest selling tech product in history. It no longer is... The price doesn't matter just as it didn't matter when the iPad got that title.

Exactly. Did everyone forget? It's not about price at all... The iPad was compared to products that were cheaper and more expensive and that was O.K... But don't ever say anything about Apple... Oh god...

Read the article: "Microsoft lived up to its goal when they announced back in September that Kinect will "blow away" iPad sales.". Hence the title.

They both compete for the limited amount of money that people have for entertainment-related electronics. Anybody who purchased a Kinect and probably another 2 or 3 games will now have to wait that much longer to buy an iPad.

Well, $150*8,000,000= 1,200,000,000. $500*3,000,000 = 1,500,000,000.
They both sold over a billion dollars worth of product in the first 80 days. Microsoft, with a product that cost roughly 1/3 the price of Apple's iProd, sold so many units that they almost kept pace, dollar for dollar, with a product that was 3x as expensive. Do you understand how many units that is to move?

You are assuming that the iPhone4 is selling at the same pace as when it was released... which is definitely not.

So you are trying to say that in the first 60 days they didn't sell 8 million devices. And then in the last 30 days of the quarter they sold another 6 million?

Had I don't what you claimed I was doing, the number would be much bigger than 14.1 million phones. That is a published number, not my extrapolation. I simply averaged the three months and the number sold.
