Microsoft Store website finally has Surface 2 tablets back in stock

Last week, we reported that the Microsoft Store website was showing that all but one model of the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 tablets were out of stock; a situation that had persisted for several weeks. This weekend, Microsoft finally got some new Surface 2 units for sale, which may signal better availability of the tablets in the future.

The site shows that both the 32GB and 64GB Surface 2 models are now available for purchase on the site.  In addition, it also shows the 64GB Surface Pro 2 is back on sale alongside the 512GB model. However, both the 128GB and the 256GB Surface Pro 2 are still listed as out of stock, as is the 32GB model of the original Surface RT tablet.

Microsoft has not offered a direct comment on why they were unable to keep up with the demand for the new Surface tablets for the past several weeks, which included most of the holiday shopping period of 2013. The company's only statement on the matter said, "We’re actively working with our manufacturing teams and retail partners to get Surface in customers’ hands as soon as possible." Microsoft is scheduled to reveal its fourth quarter 2013 financial number on Thursday and hopefully we will get some information about sales of the new Surface models at that time.

I got my from PC World in the UK when it was on a silly offer at a silly price that I couldn't help but buying one. Great if you're cooking and you need the recipe in front of you. very handing indeed.

Got a 256 model for my wife yesterday. She needed Windows for some programs for our stores and will use in college as well. Hers has the newer processor. Rep at Perimeter Mall in Atlanta said Lenox was out.

Got mine. I actually went into the Microsoft Store in Tyson's Corner, VA to get support for a problem with my Phone and while I was getting help (that ultimately was not resolved), another guy asked for a Surface2 Pro and they had it so I asked for a Surface2 and I got one. So im happy to finally have my Surface but still upset that my phone won't properly sync music.

I really don't get why they still offer a 64GB version for the Surface Pro 2? I think the demand is mostly for the 128GB models and up. That said, this could be the last batch that goes out till they release the new version Surface 2s with LTE which they said is coming. Wouldn't surprise me if they just replace the current WiFi only models with newer WiFi plus LTE models.

They might have also finally sold out of the surface rt and are ready to replace it with the surface mini? We'll see if they ever put it back on sale again or not.

I'd buy a 64GB Surface Pro 2.

I'm still deciding between surface pro 1st gen or 2nd gen. Anyone have any thoughts?

Second generation. Haswell and the associated increase in battery life are completely worth it when it comes to tablet devices.

I bought the first gen in December of 2012 and Windows 8.1 has really given it new life. I'm sure it's not as snappy as the 2nd gen but it's perfectly fine for what I do on it. Another thing to consider is that the first gen doesn't have the dual mode kickstand. If you'll frequently use it on your lap, Surface 2 is a must.
Lastly, price. I got my parents first gen surfaces during the weekend that they were $200 brand new. At the current price ($350, I believe) I just don't think there's enough of a difference to justify not spending a bit more money on Surface 2. Depends on what your priorities are. Happy hunting!

If not for the atrocious battery life on the Pro 1 then I would happily recommend it. If battery life is a major concern for you then Pro 2 all the way.

If you have the option to pick the 2nd gen then go for it. The first gen seems out of balance to me. Too thick, too heavy and not enough battery life to be a functional as a tablet. Still a great ultrabook but I imagine you'd want the hybrid experience.
