Minecraft for Xbox 360 confirmed for May 9th

Minecraft, the hit indie sandbox game that has sold over 5 million copies on the PC, now has a release date for the Xbox 360 version. Microsoft, via the Major Nelson web site, announced that the Xbox 360 Minecraft port will be launched as a downloadable Xbox Live Arcade game on May 9th. The price for the Minecraft Xbox 360 game will be 1600 Microsoft points (about $20), which puts it on the high end of the Xbox Live Arcade price range.

The Xbox 360 port of Minecraft will contain a new crafting interface made for the Xbox 360 console along with a tutorial mode. It will also support split screen multiplayer features, something which the PC version doesn't currently have.

Microsoft first announced its plans to bring Minecraft to the Xbox 360 console at E3 2011. Besides the PC, Minecraft has also been released for Android devices.

Microsoft made the Minecraft announcement as part of its "Arcade NEXT" launch of three other upcoming Xbox Live Arcade titles. The driving game Trials Evolution is due out on April 18th, followed by the combat game Bloodforge on April 25th, both for 1200 Microsoft points each. May 2nd brings the Fable spin-off game Fable Heroes for 800 Microsoft points.

Im failing to see why other then money as a motive. This game already runs on like every pc... So i'd see more throw in making it run more on portable devices (I know it does), but I haven't seen many updates.

I play the PC version, if I want to use a xbox controller ill just hook one up o_0.

Huh? What would you prefer the motivation to be? World peace?

Yes.. World peace because everyone will play minecraft and burn down the houses of everyone else.

It's a lot of money for something that will:

- Not be updated regularly (Microsoft have limits on the number of title updates you can push)
- Not have mod support
- Not allow you to create your own skin (presumably, since Microsoft hates user-generated content on XBL)
- Not have the same multiplayer experience as the PC version

They already stated that it is going to get regular updates. MS has made an eception. Microsoft doesn't hate user generated content. In fact, they encourage it. Halo Forge, Forza Liveries, FarCry map making, etc etc.
If we wanted to play minecraft on PC, we would. But many of us want it on console.

Seriously, I don't get it, what is the obsession with Minecraft? I am guessing there will be a trial version on the Arcade, guess I will have to take a look and find out ...

I wondered the same thing... until I realized it was a lot more than just building block huts.

The base game isn't that great. With custom servers like Bukkit, it is no different than any other MMO. You can put mods on it to allow for economies so you can buy rare blocks instead of searching hours for them, clan based pvp, easy creation of massive structures so that building doesn't have to be the focus. You can basically create your own video game inside of Minecraft with quests, story, and all. Someone with to much time on their hands could recreate just about any other video game in existence with the only difference being the graphics.

The creation aspect of it is not for everybody but it appeals to players of games like the Sims series. A properly made custom server appeals to MMORPG or PVP players. Some people, like myself, don't even play the game for either of those things. I enjoy programming mods for servers.

Anyone that has any interest in gaming can find something in Minecraft that appeals to them.

I wanted this for cross-platform with PC, but they abandoned it for split-screen.

I'll just stick to PC version.

Would be nice if they made this port capable of connecting to a PC server like Bukkit. Allow PC users and XBL users to play together.

I was under the impression that this is completely impossible on XBox Live. XBox Live is a walled garden and doesn't allow client/server connections with the Internet at large.

That can't be true, Shadowrun does it.

Very much agree. I so do hope they do allow this. That would be really cool, I think make more marketing too, allowing us PC players to entice the xbox friends to buy it and play the game with us. I know I would. I have a few friends I would love to be able to play it, they just dont own a PC for that. Maybe not out the box, but hopefully later on they will support this

Would make the game much better for the xbox users. If the games are stored locally, it would make it very hard to complete the projects that we love on mod servers. The owner of the game save would have to be on constantly to allow other people to work on it and it would be the slow way of doing it anyway. No economy, creeper protection, teleporting and other tools that make doing big projects manageable.

If you think $20 is to high, I would hate to see what you think of the $26.95 PC version.
