MPAA, RIAA websites fall victim to 4chan-coordinated DDoS attack

The Pirate Bay has been taking a beating lately. After being forced to move through multiple hosting solutions and surviving harsh international copyright law litigation, the pirates could use some good news for once. That piece of good news came over the weekend in the form of a mass DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack on the MPAA and RIAA’s websites over the weekend.

According to TorrentFreak, the perpetrators of the attacks were the famed citizens of the country of 4chan, all under the unified moniker of Anonymous. 4chan, using its tried and true methods of group insurrection, distributed a flyer around the Internet describing ”Operation Payback,” in which the denizens of 4chan (and countless other users from all over the Internet) would all use a software tool called a “Low Orbit Ion Cannon” at the same time to disrupt website operations at the MPAA and Friday, and the RIAA on Saturday. LOIC is a small piece of software that will fire data at a website with intent to cripple. When many are used in tandem, bad things happen to websites.

This was the document being spread around, via TechCrunch:

Operation:Payback is a bitch.

DATE \September 19, 2010\

To whom it may concern,

This is to inform you that we, Anonymous, are organizing an Operation called “Payback is a bitch”. Anonymous will be attacking the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America), the MPAA (Motion Pictures Association of America), and their hired gun AIPLEX for attacks against the popular torrent and file sharing site, the Piratebay (www.thepiratebay.org). We will prevent users to access said enemy sites and we will keep them down for as long as we can. But why, you ask? Anonymous is tired of corporate interests controlling the internet and silencing the people’s rights to spread information, but more importantly, the right to SHARE with one another. The RIAA and the MPAA feign to aid the artists and their cause; yet they do no such thing. In their eyes is not hope, only dollar signs. Anonymous will not stand this any longer. We wish you the best of luck.

Sincerely,

Anonymous,

We are legion.

Both sites are back up and running, and many would discount the attack as meaningless treachery that will have no lasting legislative effect.  However, attention mongering is definitely not outside of 4chan’s modus operandi, and they have proven time and time again that social disruption doesn’t have to have a goal to be noticed. If anything, this attack showed the anti-pirate world that they may not be as invulnerable as they think they are. Never underestimate the power of Anonymous.

People are forgetting that RIAA & Aiplex are actually carrying out DDoS attacks against torrent sites, so they're just getting their own medicine. Plus companies actually doing DDoS illegally? That's new.

This.

And they're actually hiring Indian companies to do it, so they don't get exploded by the government.

I don't think it's 4chan firing their Low Orbit Ion Canon I think it's organized by the forum at Ebaumsworld. But no matter who is doing it, it's actually very easy for most people to join in, since the LOIC software can be found on Sourceforge.

There's age old disputes between 4chan and Ebaums. The consensus is that ebaums is basically the stereotype that 4chan is--a bunch of kids on the internet flailing aimlessly.

4chan has a surprising amount of motivation and group mentality ('hive mind'). They can be exceedingly organised when it interests them.

I feel sad for the _________ of people who visit the MPAA and RIAA website everyday.

A. less than 100
B. greater than 100

Hell I bet they had more traffice by the 4chan people before the attack because they wanted to see the what the site looks like.

man the internet... who cares.... it's not even real. if you wanna do some real damage, enlist with a terror group and plant some bombs *disclaimer, i am not a promoter of terror or a troublemaker*

lol chargleberry sauce.... xD

Who was ****ed off because they weren't able to browse to the web sites of the RIAA or MPAA? Show of hands, please.

Does the RIAA and MPAA websites get much traffic? I mean..these aren't exactly Internet hotspots. DDoS attacks against Amazon or eBay, for instance, can cause a LOT more damage in revenue lost I suspect.

I can't help but wonder though if the corporate people at RIAA and MPAA both anticipated such an attack and considered it "an acceptable loss" as a result of the Piratebay stuff.

You can't stir up a hornet's nest without getting stung if you aren't careful enough. They stirred up a hornet's nest and got stung a bit, but nothing seriously bad.

If the DDOS people wanted to truly make a statement, then they should have done what hackers did when they took down bluefrog security. Hit an internet backbone and break it. When they did that, other major sites all went with it. As a result, Bluefrog waived the white flag.

I don't really understand all the attack raised by 4chan. I mean, I know the website, but it is essentially just a image board. So how all these attack being 'organnised' ? By posting images?

You can post comments with your images. The beauty comes out of the amount of traffic it gets--think of it as a forum where every time you refresh the list of threads, the entire list changes purely because of how active it is.

The most active/participated threads stay at the top, bumping up with additional posts. Therefore if one thread is heavily participated in, say one directing people to DDoS the RIAA, you will see it every time you refresh the main page drawing additional people in and thus it grows.

It's a pretty amazing social study.

I like DDoS attacks. They have my full support. I would do it myself if i knew how.. Do they have a website with donate button?

Low Orbit Ion Cannon

It's basically like what's used on each computer in a botnet, except just one computer is doing it. However, if you combine a thousand individual, willing users simultaneously firing on a single server, you obtain the same effect without the mass malware infection.

A thousand is a bit of an understatement.

As of this year, their companies are not financially viable. They've spent far more on funding the lawyers for the cases than they have recovered from the cases.

I have nothing against what Anon are doing. If it was against a legitimate company then I'd have my reservations.

Dude you'd be surprised. CatBinLady? Dusty's hurter? They can track anyone down if they're ****ed off enough.

Don't touch the hive, or you get half the colony after you.

*chan is the shell, its users the bees. Expect a massive front on an unprecedented scale should someone decide to take a bat to it rather than a poke.

You guys have to admit, they have a point. These mother****ers have been hiding behind a blatant lie saying they help artists when in fact they have their own corporate interests. They won't learn unless they are forced to learn, I'm sorry but I absolutely condone what Anonymous have done. I don't condone piracy but I am not going to agree with someone that has power altering something that should be neutral and un-controlled. It's the only way to get things done in this world anymore. Asking people and suggesting ways in which should be done doesn't work anymore, you have to take matters into your own hands.

well not that i agree with stealing . but the mpaa and the Riaa going after a mom for a million dollars in a court case over a couple songs that her son downloaded.. this is were the mpaa need to be put to the fire.. seriously a couple songs .. if it was 30 songs from 30 different cd's and the cd's were 15 bucks a cd 450 dollars if they sue for that then fine i can get that but come on now

Wow ... what losers. Don't have anything else going on in the real world? God, I bet all these guys have terrible BO, are hugely overweight, and have awful ginger beards. I don't even need to mention the lack of girlfriends. But I guess I just did.

I fully agree that these organisations are there to profit and rip people off. And I do believe that music and films per ticket/CD etc are over the price they should be. But I don't for one second believe that I deserve, and that any one else deserves free stuff. These guys seem to believe they do. And the piracy issue wraps itself up in all kinds of excuses and reasons why they deserve to pirate. But none of them are true. Anyway, I don't expect them to come after me for an internet insult. It'd only strengthen what I said before. These guys could probably make a fortune working for agencies and companies making products that benefit people legitimately, as most of them are clearly talented enough to achieve great things in the tech world. But it's wasted on crap like this. Which I hate to say to them ... wont change a goddamn thing.

The companies they took down support artists and directors who already make millions, and millions... And millions of dollars.

You are a brainwashed sheep, from a society who believes "stealing" in all forms is wrong.

As a husband and father I guess I'm also an anti social BO ridden hobbit since I support these actions.

IMO, the organized DDOS carried out by willing individuals (and not a botnet) carries a lot of similarities to a real world protest. Basically, a bunch of people who share a common belief convene at a certain time so that they can be better heard since their figurative voice becomes louder as their numbers increase. I don't think I've ever seen a group of protestors protest a corporation or business without the implicit goal of obstructing their normal operations.

A man living on the streets stealing a sandwich because he's so hungry he's got pains in his stomach is a bit different to someone stealing a music track/movie for personal enjoyment.

The fact is that whether they're rich or not, somebody put in the effort to create that movie/song and they deserve to be paid for their efforts.

I listen to UK Hardcore music and some artists have literally had to stop making hardcore music because piracy has such a big effect on them and they don't bring in enough of an income to justify making it any more.

Even my fiancee, a freelance photographer, often finds people using her works on DeviantArt and elsewhere on the internet without giving her credit or getting her consent.

Piracy affects everyone mate not just the massively rich companies.

Dude, do you know what people do when they don't have a leg to stand on in an argument? They turn to insults. Next time try and take a more mature approach eh?... Atta boy.

Also, since I'm here I might as well throw in my two cents. I personally agree with the actions of anonymous, not because I believe I deserve something for free but because these organisations feign interest in protecting the wealth of the artists while spending huge amounts of money belonging to the record companies that represent these artists and only getting a small fraction of that back (the figures are here if you're interested http://www.p2pnet.net/stuff/riaa%20irs2.pdf). Now you may say that their goal was not to earn money, but to send a message but piracy has increased since these organisations started their lawsuits so it hasn't helped in that way either.

In my opinion, the RIAA and MPAA are simply trying to make a quick buck by exploiting record companies who are unwilling to change as new technology emerges by convincing them that suing their customers is the right thing to do.

My final point is that I can see no reason why a talented musician should earn any more than someone who is talented in any other field. I agree that many artists do not earn big money, but the RIAA and MPAA most certainly don't represent them.

ok so these organization rip off from people and people rip off these organizations by using it free.. whats your problems with that when you are not part of that organization or the people who use it for free.

Ummm stealing no matter where it is, is wrong. You wouldn't walk in to a story talking about how your stealing some CDs or movies today. No, your gonna sit behind your avatar and back these thiefs up.

Unfortunately a lot of people who listen to UK Hardcore, (probably Darren Styles mostly) are quite young, but old enough to know a site "with free stuff" but probably don't even know the consequences. The big names in UK Hardcore are probably still making millions, piracy maybe even helping in ways as I seem to hear it does a lot .
Who knows maybe if piracy wasn't so advertised (every single DVD in Britain for example) not everybody would see it as an option, and would just go to HMV to buy HTID 3 lol.
I imagine artists that are less mainstream, more so Hardstyle/Hardcore (gabber) make most of their money doing raves etc, because you can't buy they're CD's in most stores.

Back on topic, wish I never missed that lol.
They always get so riled up, 20,000 threads about the raids lmao.
At least they have their reasons lol.

How did this make it to the front page? Although I side with anon on this one, look at that monster of text above me! Senseless flamewar and trolling at its best.
