Media Player Classic - BE is a free and open source audio and video player for Windows. Media Player Classic - BE is based on the original "Media Player Classic" project (Gabest) and "Media Player Classic Home Cinema" project (Casimir666), contains additional features and bug fixes. The BE mod (Black Edition Mod) is a skinned version of Media Player Classic Home Cinema, much better looking than the plain old MPC. MPC-HC BE Mod is usually newer because they use the latest SVN the most up-to-date version of the code.

What's new in this version:

  • A total of about 450 changes have been made in this version [full changelog]

No offense to the developers, but this thing looks like it belongs with Windows XP. What does it do that WMP 11 + Shark's codecs can't?

brn said,
Shark includes a Settings app that lets you configure codecs/filters. Anything else?

I left a few things out as I'm not a user of MPC but it seems like you are arguing for WMP versus other players - I can confidently argue for potplayer with the following features:

taking screenshots from video with jpegs at frame intervals for making GIF images
capturing webcam input
automatically opening playlist of all similarly titled files within a directory
selecting different audio outputs than default windows device
resuming from last point played after closing program
better options and hotkeys for dealing with contrast/brightness/gamma
hotkeys for everything
portable file

I like MPC-BE just as much as I like MPC-HC, but right now Splayer remains my video player of choice for now.

PotPlayer, Mirillis and MPC-BE pretty much lead. Anything else is lacking or close to being bloated. Thx for the new version.
