Neowin: Introducing the "Most Valued Contributor" Group

The staff have put their heads together and come up with a shortlist of forum members we feel best deserve recognition for their contributions over the years. As you can see below, recognition is as follows:

What MVC's get
Enhanced forum permissions, no flood control, larger PM storage, a Blog and a dedicated MVC forum.

MVC's is a new group to aspire to on Neowin, there is no limitation on the size of the group and all nominees are selected by staff, veterans and suggested by current MVC's. To qualify you must be a member of Neowin and to put it simple -a noticeably helpful member! Usually forums are well known for the grouped restrictions but not so much on appraisal. We aren't keen on implementing a karma system so we thought, our staff is active and large enough to recognize those who stand out as being exceptionally helpful.

The following members have been selected for 2008:

There were quite a few more nominations, so those that didn't make the list and feel it might be unjustified please know that we want to start with this group and the rest that were nominated will not go un-noticed.

As always I'd like to thank our visiting members and guests and we hope that this new group is something worth aspiring to.

It's possible that there were many more nominees. Imagine how many they (the staff) had to choose out of 200,000+ members.

curious. If its about contribution, then why isnt Hum on the list? Or have I missed something?
Nearly all the news story posts in the forum are from him. I thought that would be contribution enough?
Just curious.

I LOVE the new MVC group and think it is a brilliant idea! Congrats to the people who made it and well done to the person/people who thought of the idea.

It's a shame I don't have the knowledge or time to be an MVC ... can't there be a group for the 'Laziest Members Of Neowin Who Come Here About Once A Week' (the LMONWCHAOAWs)???

It's funny how Neowin is slowly pushing me away through its actions.

First the Kotaku copyright (hint e-penis/e-thugs) debacle. Now the staff and only staff have selected a elite group of people who they not the community believe are the most valued? And now get special treatment because of it.

Good job at alienating the rest of us, especially and I am putting a lot of emphasis here on not letting us choose to nominate and elect this group of members.

There should be recognition in the Hardware section, I frequent Hardware and I dont know anyone on that list. Members like chconline is some of the most knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful posters around.

I hope this will increase the community members drive to be helful rather than just flame, rant, bant, troll etc...

It looks so gay. Come on neowin shouldn't be about seriousness and more about fun.

Lmao! I love that answer!! But to the guy who called it gay, it isn't gay, it is a very good gesture to the people who help the most with problems and other things. It is also an incentive for others to help just as much. And why should Neowin not be serious? People came here for support with serious issues AS WELL as for fun.

Agreed, sorry if I offended anyone. I didn't know so many wanted recognition. I like reading this site. I wonder how I can see my post history or get reply notifications (any way to follow a thread).

This is an excellent idea and will remind people that Neowin isn't just news and fun but helpful and insightful too. Congratulations to those members making the list.

So do some others... SpartanX, DrunknMunky, American Ninja off the top of my head.

I think I should be on the list, solely because that black/green sig is sexy :D
Unfortunately I think that restriction probably counts against me

Congrats to those on the list!

i don't get the point of this? is this supposed to mean that this is the start of some race for the badges?
many more people contribute too...Aaron et al and in a big way..i dont see why they havent made it to your "list". I've only seen Kol outta that list making good contributions.

Disappointing...not because i didnt make it to the list, but because you're classifying us. You've already got suggestions on who should have gotten it n who shouldnt have. This is the start of NeoWin politics.

Did you mean Anaron? If so, I feel very honoured that you mentioned me. Thanks. If not, then thanks anyways.

Yes, I was mentioning your name. Sorry for the wrong spelling. Well I do feel that you have contributed to neowin in a very big way, and you're the most helpful guy around. Really don't get the idea of this grading system. Feels like kindergarten all over again.

Don't worry about the spelling, hehe. I'm glad you noticed my contributions. I feel quite happy now. Comments like these motivate me to help the community even more. Thanks alot sibot, I really appreciate it.

Would it not be better for MVCs to just have the green plus, instead of it and their entire name green, and leave name colours to moderators/staff? After all, wouldn't MVCs be classed the same as (or slightly above subscribers?).

about how many posts before you are selected for this?
is it how helpful you are to questions posed by other members? what is exactly the criteria?

Congratulations to all the members selected, and a big Well Done[color=#000099].

And a thank you to any and all who have helped others, in any small way.

Thanks for those that have nominated me. I truly have some tough competition. The Neowin community has been great. Other forums can't match in helping its users, having interesting threads and being a great spot.

Strangely, I never thought I would find myself in a competition for the best "keyboarder" on an Internet forum. But, it goes without saying: May the best "keyboarder" win!

OOo, well done to those guys, sounds like a great idea overall!
Though I think some sort of karma system could be used.

And does anyone else think of the DVD/Cd/Game selling shop MVC? :P

Sadly as dead as the proverbial parrot. Which is why I buy optical media online exclusively as I can't walk 20yds from the office to buy at a discount anymore

Hey, where is my name in the list, i've posted at least 4 or 5 posts to Neowin (inc this one) in the last few years, I can't beleive I wasn't nominated by anyone. Hummmff! This is ballony, its got to be fixed, I call a recount. It's worse than Eurovision.......FGS..!!!

Hi everyone, my names Sam BTW.....

Is there nothing for the loyal peeps that have been here for 5+ years. I tell ya, it takes some f'n loyalty to be here for that long.

I don't know, seems kinda harsh to loyal members. They could've easily left a long time ago. Just thinking out loud here. However small it may be, it would be a thank you.

MVC isn't about loyalty. It's about the contributions certain members have made that have made Neowin as a whole a better place to visit. Sure, it's great we have such loyal members, but that's simply not what the MVC group rewards.

Loyalty certainly ain't everything:

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the staff for this honour.

I'd also like to thank my mum and dad, without whom none of this would have been possible. Oh, and my cats as they'll probably never get mentioned again in their lifetime on a public forum.

Wow, thank you very much. I really was not expecting this.

First I'd like to thank god for this award. (just kidding) I'd like to thank Neowin of course. Its been a great 6 years.

I'd love to get on that list one day! Though I only tend to come out here to mess around rather than do something productive so I don't expect that'll happen any time soon

Wow! An idea of mine that was suggested being made into realisation by Neowin! That's really good! And to all others who say that Neowin mods don't listen to their members, you have been proven wrong .

I was reading your post in S&FI issue the other day and thinking "he's going to be in for a shock when we roll this out" MVC has been in the planning for a couple months now.

Ah well, I knew that was so, as it would be something that you would be logically thinking to improve Neowin as a whole. At least I gave a good idea, and maybe it was just enough of a nudge that made it to be released so soon after my comment ?

Congrats to everyone on there, especially KoL. I remember that tacker from the good ol XP skinning days :p

Anywho, how about an update of the veterans list while were at it....

Congrats. I 100% agree with mrbester - I have never known anyone offer help in such a non-biased way, and offer alternatives too!

But where's snyper? LOL

Is this a good idea? Its great to thank the dogooders of the community. But you'll get people whining why they arnt on the list etc.

We will see how this rolls in the new year.

Congrats if you made the list!

I personally don't really care who's on the list. Never saw any of the people on it post, except KoL.
But yeah, congrats to all who are on it.

This is a good idea, however i'd like to see a nomination list and then voting from fellow members on who they'd want to recieve said award. I also think that awards should acknowledge members for help in specific areas of neowin.
