New Feature: Report News Comment

We now have a functional Report News Comment button on the comments of our news posts. As always we encourage you to use this tool to report inappropriate material or other ToS violations, yet at the same time we remind you that we discourage frivolous abuse of such tools. We appreciate the community support and assistance in helping to make Neowin a better place for us all. Big thanks to DaveLegg for making this happen.

Finally. Thanks for implementing this!

I've always noticed a lot more crap exists in news comment sections as opposed to the forum where members can immediately report posts. Before this we'd just hope a (news) moderator wanders into news comment threads, and usually those threads are hot topics (i.e. anything about Vista, Apple, etc.).

Seeing how badly thread ratings are abused in the forum, I'd say no. For places where comment voting is in place (Youtube, Digg), bad rating = user disagrees with post. Oddly enough, Slashdot doesn't seem to have this problem.

I think that Slashdot's meta-moderation (moderate those who have moderated) helps weed out people who abuse the moderation points they are given, and only those who fairly moderate get mod points again.

Not perfect, but it is fairly self-regulating and reasonably fair.

Thank you!
it's been months since i've seen an apple news post that didnt turn into a war or trolling paradise. I was just about to ask that commenting be disabled on all apple news.
As much as i b*tch when i don't like things around here, this is something worth praising. Much appreciated guys

That would be fair as long as they disable comments on news for Microsoft, Vista, game consoles, browsers, etc... Can't have it both ways.

THANK YOU!!!

This is an excellent feature and I hope it helps prevent news discussions from degenerating into pointless troll wars.

The front page news section has needed this as at times comments by some posters amount to nothing more than abuse, pointlessness, trolling and flaming. Thank you DaveLegg.

Oh, and these comments work nicely in my FF browser on my new iMac. Great job on using standards in developing this site. Keep up the good work.

I think it's time for a beer though.

Exactly.

The news section is the only place where we can have an all-out, knock-down free-for-all.

Too bad it's getting pussified.

I don't think there's a better example of WHY the system was implemented.

News posts aren't for pointless troll wars. They are for a mature and, if possible, meaningful discussion.

If you don't like it, you might consider not commenting. Or post on apple.com where more people will appreciate your words.

Ah, I can also report my own comment! Wonderful. So tomorrow when I read over my drunken rants I can administer retribution.

May I suggest a possible 'report news item'? Recently some news items are nothing more than flamebait.

Commenting is disabled on this article.
