New Windows Phone 7 device leaks; called Dell Lightning

Engadget has just posted a major phone leak. Although not as hyped up as the iPhone 4G, this upcoming phone by Dell is sure to make you think again before deciding Microsoft is out of the running for king of the smartphone market.

The device is called the Lightning, and is an extremely thin portrait slider with some pretty amazing specs. Here's what this slick little devil is packing:

  • 1 GHz Snapdragon processor
  • WVGA 4.1" OLED screen
  • AT&T and T-Mobile 3G
  • 5 MP autofocus camera
  • 1 GB flash with 512 MB RAM
  • 8 GB microSD card
  • GPS, accelerometer, compass, FM radio, ambient light sensor
  • Flash and Silverlight support
  • DivX playback

The spec sheet makes no mention of a flash for the camera, but being as Microsoft requires all Windows Phone 7 devices to have one, we'll have to assume it's there. Engadget also mentions that the device will get an upgraded to LTE in Q4 2011. The release date for the Lightning is said to be sometime in Q4, which co-insides with the official Windows Phone 7 launch window. Check out the gallery below to see this piece of art.

Very nice! I'm assuming that "LTE upgrade in Q4 2011" implies this beauty will be available on Verizon? Though that's sort of a long time to wait

"Although not as hype-worthy as the iPhone 4G"
Was that really ****ing necessary to throw into the article???

Someone us might be looking forward to WinMo7 more than another ****ing rehashed iPhone.

Of course it's Windows Mobile. The device is simply called a Windows Phone; the OS stays Windows Mobile 7.

Nope your wrong... Windows Phone 7 Series was the name but then they took Series away from the name and now it's just Windows Phone 7. I thought with all the branding all those who called it that would learn...it's built from the ground up it doesn't support anything from Windows Phone Classic. Wake up and realize that.

I'd probably have to stop using my Zune if the windows mobile phones use the exact same interface for media...cause its just so damn nice. That also means I'd have to pass on Android, which is likely to see better apps (or more, at least). Ugh, decisions!

In picture 3, it looks as if it's simply running the Zune HD os, unless I'm sorely mistaken.

Yea looks EXACTLY like the Zune HD os. I don't recall Zune on WP7 having an interface like that. It works more like the Twitter and Facebook apps on the Zune HD.

Yep, see my comment near the top. This is FAKE.

We're talking about the hardware, the UI shots could be fake but the device could be real and being worked on.

"Although not as hype-worthy as the iPhone 4G" ???

might I suggest you keep such flame-baiting out of the posting? and you know this because - you're an apple expert? then keep it that way; be the iphone expert and leave out "those" comments fro posts.

Great phone by the way. I hope other manufacturer's keep such good stuffs coming.

Mah... with only 8GB of storage does not seem so great to me. My HD2 already has 16GB and will get 32GB soon; furthermore I can swap SD Cards, install CABs etc. etc.
Hopefully by the time WP8 will be out MS will have all these restrictions and shortcomings fixed.
Just my opinion of course.

It is becoming very hard to keep tracking of all these "leaks".........
I wonder how long before a HTC device will be leaked......

Probably not long but I have my doubts HTC will even do a WP7 phone, since MS nuked support for "HTC Sense" they may not take kindly to it. That said considering 3/4 of their lineup are WM phones, so chances are they'll still do one.

To the topic, the handset itself looks slick but I'm still not sold on WP7 to honest, it tries too hard to be the "anti-iPhone" and it kills it for me.

HTC will now primarily utilise the Sense in its Andriod line up. So the R&D certainly didnt go to waste on developing it.

Also WM6.5 will live on and sense is still a viable overlay for that. WM6.5 will be used on cheaper phones or phones for non-premium markets. The conclusion being that HTC is no worse off and they arent going to cut out a whole OS just because MS wants to control the Out of the box experience.

I noticed that too. Really cool.

No surprise since with firmware 4.5 the ZuneHD can play DivX/Xvid .avi files, any WP7 phone will be able as well.

Ill agree that a landscape keyboard would have been preferable, but this appears thinner than most of the other ones out there and portrait keyboard isnt the end of the world, gives you a nice option if onscreen typing isnt for you.

Go Dell, this is want I want to see 4" screen, sleek design, thin. Sexy Sexy.

only point of contention is the 8GB MicroSD, I thought MS removed SD card support from WP7.

No, the OS supports them, what they have "removed" for now anyways, is the ability for you to get to it. They're not in a easy to access slot, they're part of the phone for now. I'm sure people who want to and know how can crack one open and replace that unless it's soldered on to the phones board.

ah okay, cheers for the info

I like, a non touch phone finally, i miss these!

Did I read this right? You think this phone doesn't have touch??? My eyes must be messed up today lol

TheNay is referring to the fact that it includes a physical keyboard.

I would prefer it if the keyboard slid out in lanbdscape orientation rather than portrate. as per htc devices that have keyboards.

I'm sure a lot of people would, it would definitely prove to be easier to type on.

HEY GUYS! stop looking at the device and read the specs!
Full support of Flash, Flash Video, and Silverlight!

Stop thinking you are first and read my previous comment!
"Anyone notice the first screen shot "Full support of Flash, Flash Video, and Silverlight""

I think they look really great. Of course they can't be laggy or buggy when they're out, but the concept sure looks great.

What's the highest capacity SD card available? I was kind of hoping these phones would be able to somehow store around 60GB.

WP 7 specs do not allow removable storage.....

Actually that changed and even above it says it includes a 8GB microSD card. Too many people complained so they put it back in.

i want to try android or this next. (currently have iphone 3g)

wonder which os is better.

Judging by my experience with the Zune HD os, WP7 will certainly be an enjoyable experience. I can't vouch for android though.

I'm afraid these "leaks" are extremely FAKE. Look at the screenshots on the device....that's the Zune HD interface, NOT the Windows Phone 7 interface. The icons are the "Pins", "New", and "Recent" icons from the Zune HD. So, we already know that the pictures of one of those slides isn't real.

Also, the slide that has the Bing application, isn't that the exact Bing app from the iPhone? So they just took a screenshot of the Bing iPhone app and put it over the phone? This isn't real.....

What are you talking about? Some of the screenshots on the device show the music playing app--which, surprise, is the same interface as the Zune HD (because Microsoft are targeting platform consistency nowadays).

Ditto on the Bing app. The Bing app looks the same on all paltforms for consistency. I've played with the WP7 UI and nothing in those screenshots looks out of place.

Look at the REAL Windows Phone 7 Zune app: blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/02/zune-hub-every-1.jpg

It is different. The "leaked" slideshows here are simply using screenshots from a Zune HD. This isn't real. The photos from Microsoft themselves prove that.

Seems a lot of effort to make some fakes.

Ooo physical keyboard

Because you and the pictures said it. Other wise I would not have known that this had a QWERTY keyboard.
