Nokia targets boring iPhone 5 colors in awesome Lumia ad

We won't deny it: here at Neowin we're just a little bit excited for the launch of Nokia's new Lumia smartphones next month. To create some hype before we see the new Windows Phone 8 devices hit the shelves, Nokia has created a new ad that directly targets the iPhone 5 and its lack of color choices - or color in its buyers for that matter.

The ad is pretty cool we have to say, as it shows a whole bunch of animated slave-like people trudging up to buy the new iPhone, before one simply mentions the word "color". Then all hell breaks loose, alarms go off, people go crazy and the guy exits the store to see a whole bunch of cool people walking around with their Nokia Lumias.

It's a great piece of marketing from the people at Nokia, and we hope something like this makes the transition to TV. Anyway, both the Nokia Lumia 820 and Lumia 920 are slated for a release sometime in November on a number of carriers worldwide, with European pricing suggesting the devices will cost €499 and €599 respectively.

I did a poll in my area and 99% of people will put their smartphones in a colored case. They don't care what color the actual phone is.

Not very good marketing, but a great ad non the less.. i don't think it really sells the Lumia, is it supposed to? just looks like one huge dig at Apple to me, would be good to see some retaliation on Apple's part for some fun competition.

One thing i don't like about this sort of advertising especially when it's directed at Apple, all it does is emphasise the fact that Apple is the #1 sought after device. Do they not have the faith in their products to advertise them for what they are? instead of saying "this is why our phone is better than iPhone" and then using a splash of colour to fight that case doesn't really say much about it, hence why i don't think this was anything more than a dig.

If you are 5 years old this marketing tactic may have some meaning for you but the rest of us know that canary yellow or bright blue will not always go with everything in your wardrobe.

That's why Apple make phones in colors that go with EVERYTHING and why you can have a case in any colour you want for when you want a splash of colour.

I'm getting sick of this bull****ting about a phone that you can't get. What's the purpose of making a press event and showing a phone without even an estimated availability date? They don't event make the OS so they weren't allowed to show it . They will always lose with companies that rely on Android or other that make the OS in-house.
They really should learn from Apple. They announce a product and in 2 weeks you can get one.
It looks like Nokia and Motorola were really afraid of iPhone 5 so they had to "disturb" the announcement period a little bit with their meaningless events.
I'm not an iPhone fan but I really do appreciate Apple in how it is prepared to swiftly release products after they announce them.

i believe rainbows had them beat by millions of years.

Purple or black for me, that is, if i go WP. So any choices will be coming this fall, itll come down to whether the apps i use daily are avail on the platform and early reviews.

Im not sure on this one, I love the Lumia phones and its great that they are colorful however I don't agree with the ad. Apple's black and grey colors flow across the entire brand line. If this was Apple 10 years ago, then maybe they would be selling the iPhone in many colors like the colorful iMacs

Boring is a subjective concept… Boring for certain people = Classic and elegant for others

I don't think the iPhone is boring. The app store is not. That's all that matters.

More apps > Yellow/Cyan phone

Some will like, some won't, as is the case in all marketing. Nokia are putting out plenty of ads and this is just one which focuses on the colours. Others focus on the boss like camera, others boast the mapping tech, others look at the touch screen tech. At the end of the day Nokia are making better and different phones with an OS that is different and (subjective) better overall. Its Ll marketing and bull**** now, the tech is better but unfortunately people are dumb so gimicks are required on the marketing front.

Its probably better to refer to your phone as a color rather than a Windows phone when talking to the general populous, no one know what a Windows phone is

I see what they did there, a reverse from 1984 ad. But is it imply that only the color is the real difference at the end of the day between them.

Instead of making ads about colors which don't even matter when you can add a case; they should be working on how to improve their boring app market.

It wouldn't be "their" [Nokia] boring app market, but Microsoft's App Market you're complaining about.

improving the app market, involves getting the platform to a higher level, which involves getting people to buy phones, which involves marketing, which involves lots of different techniques, one of which is celebrating the colours your phones are available in for those that will respond to such marketing.

I know right, captain obvious, but you asked.

You're right. The boring app market is the only thing keeping me away from buying a Windows Phone (and an Android phone too, even if it has more apps).

I love the Apple Store for this reason. For example, there's something like 10-12 Podcasts managers on the Apple Store, many Subsonic clients, etc. I love to have multiple choices.

If colors don't matter, then why get a case at all? If colors don't matter, then why did Apple make the new iPod nano in different colors? The fans talk about how thin and beautiful iPhones are, and the first thing they do is slap a case on it, making it thicker and hiding the looks of the phone. For example, the GF, when seeing the new iP5, had to have a white one because, and I quote, "it is so pretty." She stood in line on release day and got one, and came home with a giant pink case on it because it made it "prettier." You can now only see the screen, pink, and an opening for the camera.

Of course, Apple likes to talk up in their commercial about it being smaller and bigger at the same time, so I guess it is not supposed to make sense.

Considering that you don't need a case for the Lumia as you do with an iPhone your point is moot.

+1 some apps are like alpha (1.0) buggy and not available. I buy a smartphone for apps, but i guess some people's first criteria is the camera on their phone. For me, if you want a professional camera, go for DSLR and stop the complaining.

Just a side note, you have to look at the Apple and Google Play App stores more closely. While they may both flaunt the notion that they have the "most apps", you need to take into effect that 80% of these do the same function and/or are utter crap. As the Windows Marketplace App Store grows, the same will happen.

Honestly, how many Weather Apps do you need? Or Calender? Or Social Networking? Note Taking?

Catch my drift?

Buggy apps? No more than ios and play apps, in fact there's more buggy apps in these app stores.

I'd rather 30-50 apps doing exactly what I want (which I have now with quality apps in the Marketplace), than 200 apps that I have to rely on several to achieve the same outcome

For the 800/900 series, cyan was their favorite color. Now they are in love with yellow. I don't blame them - it looks great.

A better ad would be to take the Apple 1984 Commercial and slightly modify it for Nokia, but I'd almost keep it exactly the same. see it here. I'd just get a Tim Cook look alike for the guy on the screen, with this text. "On November 4th Nokia will introduce the Lumia 920. And you'll see why 2012 won't be like 2011."

I agree. Seriously, that 1984 ad characterized the IBM PC and its followers as unthinking automatons living in a bland existence ruled by an autocrat. Isn't that pretty much what the fanatical brainwashed followers, bland grey software, sterile aluminum and glass hardware, and corporate culture of Apple is like now?!

The only reason i dont like the yellow is because you cant actually see the text or icons properly. White text/icons on a bright yellow background does not work well, just look at the yellow Lumia in the vid here. The red or blue Lumia's are ok as the colour is darker.
