Paint.NET 3.0 Alpha 2

Paint.NET is image and photo manipulation software designed to be used on computers that run Windows. It supports layers, unlimited undo, special effects, and a wide variety of useful and powerful tools.

It started development as an undergraduate college senior design project mentored by Microsoft, and is currently being maintained by some of the alumni that originally worked on it. Originally intended as a free replacement for the MS Paint software that comes with Windows, it has grown into a powerful yet simple tool for photo and image editing.

The programming language used to create Paint.NET is C#, with a small amount of C++ for installation and shell-integration related functionality.

Rick, thanks for the links, that makes things a lot clearer :)

Great work with this program, it has become a firm fixture on our Windows machines at my work. The translucent palette floaters even made our rather neo-luddite MD excited about a UI element for the first time on record!

Exciting to hear that Miguel & co. are getting good results porting it to Mono too - I'd love to have it in my toolbox on Linux at home, too!

Keep up the good work!

Why do most of the programs build using .Net framework have .NET in their name tag? Also, Java programs seem to have J in front of them. This just annoys me

Oh... this must really have to do with the J and .NET stuff...

May i be a .me ?

Lol, just kidding

rick brewster (developer) is part of Microsoft

The program was made before he came to MS.

I'm under the impression (can't substantiate though) that the project has received ongoing support from Microsoft, though. I wouldn't be too surprised if it does eventually replace MSPaint, though it might be kept in the status of a downloadable 'PowerToy' like TweakUI to keep any antitrust heat off their backs. Also it uses .NET 2.0 IIRC, which is still only an optional update in MS Update (even though 3.0 aka WinFX will supercede it before long).

Does this program open fast? Because the only thing I don't like about my Photoshop right now is how long it takes to load before I can get anyting done.

MS should just hire this guys and introduce this program as a Paint replacement...

they're already part of microsoft

Quote - machorro said @ #2.4

cool.. didn't know that :), well anyway they should ditch Paint for this :P

Then Adobe would complain that no one would buy Photoshop.

lol XD it's not THAT good.

yup, they'll never rip the market awaay from photoshop... otherwise, the gimp and fireworks would have already done that.

Well, they can complain all they want, but Adobe and Photoshop blow twin chunks...

They can't because someone would sue them for cutting them out of market share.

Huh? Not if they signed a contract with Microsoft.
