Report: iPhone 5 press event to be held October 4

Are you ready for yet another iPhone 5 rumor story? This newest note comes from the Wall Street Journal's AllThingsD.com web site. It claims via unnamed sources that Apple will hold its press event to introduce the next version of its best selling smartphone on October 4 with the actual launch of the iPhone 5 due a few weeks later. The story also claims that new Apple CEO Tim Cook will be leading the press event. If true, it will be the first time that Cook will take charge of one of Apple's media events since Apple founder Steve Jobs stepped down from his CEO position earlier this summer. The article does speculate that Jobs himself might show up, if his current health issues allow him to do so.

Speculation about the launch of the iPhone 5 has been the single biggest topic for the tech industry for months and indeed there have been a ton of stories and rumors about the iPhone 5's release date, some based purely on speculation and other based on leaked memos and notes. More recently the rumor mill had the iPhone 5 being announced on October 5 and October 7.

Many people also believe that Apple will also launch a new and cheaper version of the current iPhone 4 during the iPhone 5 press event. Apple might also announce its annual refresh of its iPod media player library during the same press event. So far there has been far less advance rumors about what the new iPods might be like.

Neowin just please stop posting all these reports and rumors about the release date of the iPhone it's just enough now. I am sure most of the people would appreciate if you'd just publish the article when he event is confirmed by apple rather than posting 100's of rumors. Thanks

When AllThingsD (owned by The Wall Street Journal) publishes a report, it's pretty likely to be accurate. They don't just post rumors pulled from thin air.

EDIT: Yes! In before Brad!

AllthingsD has been accurate on every iPhone rumor date, this is about is confirmed as it will get until the Apple puts out invites.

Yeah but its just a report. There is a chance it might be wrong. I am looking forward for the iPhone like most of the people on the globe but this rumor thing is just driving me nuts. If this is true apple will send out the invitations next week for sure.

Oh Boy, another free advert for Apple. It seems when the big Corporations need free advertizing they put on a Press event, thus they ensure that all the world will know it is time to buy the newest and greatest whatever, it is they are putting out.

The sad part is the news media (all forms) jump at the chance to be the first to let the world know how wonderful this product is, and will be for all.

It will be kind of weird to see these big announcements handled by someone other than Jobs...

This is true; like him or not he was an histrionic character and was indeed successful; on the other hand Bill Gates was exactly the opposite still he was, IMO of course, the best MS public figure.
He would still win hands down compared to Ballmer and Sinofsky.

But..... life goes on and they are gone.

Yeah because I just can't skip the stories that don't interest me.
I like this "new" Neowin, which covers a lot of news.
I seem to go to Engadget and other sites, less and less.

It's as if John was taunting us.

I would love to have the "ignore writer" option, I would gladly see every other news on the site as I normally do.... without actually getting myself "rumored"
