Rumor: next-gen iPhone rumored to have 16:9 display

Adding to the rumors that Apple would be using 4 inch screens on the iPhone 5, 9to5mac is now reporting that a number of sources within Apple have been testing phones with a 16:9 which features a resolution of 1136 x 640.

The rumor indicates that the iPhone’s aspect ratio is set to change and the specific and very unusual resolution implies that the rumor could have some validity. Going from general knowledge of native resolutions of various devices, if a screen like the rumor suggests appears on the iPhone 5, you can expect the home screen to feature an extra row of icons — with no drop in quality.

"Undisclosed" employees are supposedly testing these new iPhones in "locked shells in order to disguise the exterior design". These employees also indicate that the dock connector is changing and will be "between the size of a Micro-USB and Mini-USB connector" in size.

There are many speculations of what the next iPhone will be like an whilst we don’t have any solid details yet, we look forward to finding out exactly what the iPhone 5 will feature internally and how its exterior will be improved.

I want enhanced siri - that's it really. I use my phone for messaging, email, and phone calls. The occasional game - sure. I love Siri, makes scheduling appointments and meetings amazing!

Instead of making ridiculous specs, you could just write better software lol. Which is why the galaxy s 3 is garbage, and if they up the specs too much it'll up the price too much and it'll be useless. most users aren't power users that need to run crazy 3d processing or anything. they need to be careful not to go the way of android. if I were them, I'd just spend more time optimizing iOS and making it less ****ty.

hmm larger screen . I like the size of the iphone. It is perfect size with a case for my pocket. this will be interesting.

good if true, the iPod dock was getting old and to big... sure it supported multiple standards originally, video out, firewire, usb, etc... but now days just use USB3 you get high powered charging if in a USB3 port, or back to +5v charging if not...

only bad thing, and I always laughed when people did this, people that built iPod adapters into their house design as a "plus" now have to replace that...

I have always wondered why the 16:9 ratio is so popular, yet it hasn't been used much in the phone industry.

Come on, guys, it's close to a golden rectangle. It's a standard that will last forever IMO.

The HTC Incredible was about 16:9ish and I didn't like it. In portrait mode the on-screen keyboard was too skinny, and in landscape mode the on-screen keyboard was too stretched/fat.

oh so thats the new bone being thrown to the sheeple . A larger screen I guess the masses will go out and drop a few hundred more on that feature ....Ohhh boy forget the the one I just purchased I have to have this now .. Incredable

I'm not sure Apple have actually done anything radically new (for them) since they unveiled the iPad back in 2010. It seems to be a slow gradient of incremental improvements now - ripe for a competitor to come along and disrupt their market . . .

Wow, leave it to someone who's unoriginal to repeat the same tired ass joke over and over.

Well, Apple seems to repeat the same tired ass joke over and over, and the iSheep keep buying it.

Witness the beginning of the end for Apple as you know it. Without Jobs to steer this ship, it's going to be a gradual slow spiral down to the bottom, it'll take years, but it's going to happen. With short sighted product decisions that lack the right customer consideration and competition finally getting up to par, it's the perfect storm.

finally playing catchup to a zillion other phones out there, and once they release it everybody will be like "wow" and "epic".
I still will prolly get one though.

Well said. Though I won't be buying one.

It's about time ! The world moved from tiny screens to a size that clearly there is a demand for quite some time ago. Whilst I am not a proponent of gargantuan devices like the Samsung Note or even smaller devices that are any bigger than a ~4.3 inch screen sticking with a 3.5inch display was just plain dumb. Nothing stops Apple from keeping 3.5 for those that want it and going up in size to meet demand of those that want more. They have enough room in the current chassis to go up in screen size without increasing the physical dimensions of the phone anyway!

However I suspect if they kept two screen sizes the most popular of the two would become apparent quite quickly and Apple would eventually retire the smaller one.

This is a case of the original innovator and leader now following.

In terms of the connector I see problems with people using their current accessories so I expect there to be a dongle to convert their new device to be able to work with the old accessories (more $$ for Apple). I also question why they would change the connector?
If they wanted more functionality (signals) they have many pins that are unused on the current connectors. It will also create lots of work and confusion for the accessory manufacturers and customers.

I also agree with the micro USB being the logical step but hey this is Apple!

Lastly taking a non standard approach to screen aspect I also think is troublesome. Video content will need to be transcoded differently and it will not play well on bigger screens. With the advent of the cloud and people connecting to the internet from their TV's or their TV's to their smart phones the who eco system and of playability across devices needs to be considered when makinga change in these areas.

Like? My Lumia does not have it for example................

Don't do it half-azzed. If it's indeed 16:9, make it full 720p.

Oh God. Why on earth are everybody HD resolutions on such a small displays?

Because not seeing pixels makes the image incredibly clear and easy to read. I think the goal is to have the iPhone screen look like it is a printed page.

Cheaper to make, yes. But the cost of a connector is a tiny fraction of the total BOM. Apple would likely stick to the usual retail price, and pocket the extra rather than pass it on to the consumer.

DAMN I CALLED on the CONNECTOR!...
That day I was telling myself no way Apple going to keep this huge connector anymore.

Not so sure about the new resolution wouldn't this break all the apps?

No, you'd get more screen real estate with most apps (think Twitter, Facebook, Calendar, etc). Games would probably have to run with black bars on the sides.

Maybe instead of black bars they could put the controls on the side with the extra screen real estate

a) didn't the EU and American governments come down on cellphone manufacturers for having so many different type of connectors, that were just landfill waste every time you changed phones?

b) Apple must need to sell more accessories, no easier way to do that than to change your connectors with the new iphone.

Yep, I thought it was passed that the MicroUSB is going to be the standard that companies had to adhere to?

Because there are enough Apple sets out there, plus the iPads, which all use the same connector. Still, I'm surprised at the idea of a new connector.

True. But if Apple changes the connector, it should be micro USB. To use anything else would be silly. They are the only ones that haven't made this transition. It would be a shame to move from one proprietary connector to another.

Stick to the normal 30-pin connector, which isn't actually just used by Apple by the way.
They only adopted it.

I hope they don't use micro-USB as it's a fugly design for a port.
Few ports are so shabby as micro-USB, the king of crap being SCART.

Oh and Apple does comply with EU laws, it provides a dock connector to micro USB adaptor here in the EU.
It's sold separately, but really, who needs it.
I can grab a bunch of 10 dock cables for 2 dollars including shipping, that's plenty to give to all my non-Apple-user friends in case I ever need their wall outlets.

If they actually did change the connector i would laugh so hard. they've been very good at screwing over their users.

MicroUSB may be 'ugly' but the vast majority of smartphones out there use it. In order to not be complete dicks to your users your better off sticking to the standard rather than forcing your own proprietary crappy port on people and causing people to have to buy even more damn cables

Just get the flipping adaptor then.

Screw customers?
They'd be screwed once they see all their existing accessories don't work anymore.
Docks, mics, camera connection kit, amps, etc...
There are so many accessories, it's ridiculous.
I'd rather have to use an adaptor to charge in the odd case someone doesn't have a dock cable and I don't have mine with me either than to lose accessories that wouldn't conceptually work anymore with an adaptor or that would be way clunkier.
(adaptor for charging means, the cable just gets longer... who cares, it rests there and nobody gives a damn, accessories you actually mostly have on your device when you use them)

And micro USB is more than "ugly", it's a fiddly port, the dock port snaps perfectly, you can even hang your device on it if you want.
Perfect for external batteries that you carry around and use when the phone is in a bag while you're moving.
It means it won't lose connection after a short amount of time and ridicule your charging attempt.

So yeah, I'd dislike micro USB for several reasons.
Stick to the dock connector, simples.

I agree with all the spec you were saying but "Better customization" ?? IOS is not about customization and you will never get that from apple.

What do you need 1GB of ram for?!

Bec 512 isnt enough? The games studder and skip frames bec it has no memory to run properly.
Consider this. If you take an iPhone running iOS 5.1.1 and close all the apps running exacpt what you can't close or stop. the devic eis still using 50% of the RAM just onm the OS. When you open just 2 apps, 50% of what is left si already gone. For every app u open and close but is still on the taskbar, they remain in memory until another applications pushes them out.

One game I play which isn't even graphic intensive is MyTown2. It has very few animations. However when the screen is full with cpints to collect, the game totally freezes bec it can't handle the redraws and clooect the coins too. So it pauses collects and then moves again. And check this, even tho the new iPad has more RAm, it does the same exact thing, except it goes quicker.

Would more RAM help? Surely, but that isn't the only problem.

For me Apples stuff just sucks, they just look cool. I won't be buying another Apple device for a very long time. I still have my iPad inside its origina l plastic do it doesn't even get a scratch on it. That way when I sell it next year it will be mint.

That next iPhone finally going 4"? 4" devices have been avail since 2009. Still won't have the highest resolution and it may finally go 4G. New device that will be 3 years behind yet again. Yet they will have some gimmick that the fans simpluy cant resist.

Siri was a gimmicky nearly useless feature.

I agree it needs the extra ram. There is a jailbreak app that automatically clears out apps running in the background that aren't doing anything. When your memory drops below a certain point it activates.
