Rumor: Windows Phone Blue could be delayed to 2014

We have reported in the past about Microsoft's plans to offer yearly commercial updates to Windows 8 starting later this year with Windows Blue. While Microsoft has yet to comment officially on those plans, the company has posted job listings that show that not only is Microsoft working on Windows Blue for PCs, but Windows Phone Blue for the various smartphones that use that OS as well.

So does that mean we can expect both Windows Blue and Windows Phone Blue to be launched around the same time this year? Maybe not. ZDNet.com columnist Mary Jo Foley, as part of the Twit.TV Windows Weekly video podcast, has heard via unnamed sources that the Windows Phone Blue team is a bit behind the Windows Blue PC team in terms of development. As a result, Foley states that Microsoft is not currently sure if Windows Phone Blue will launch in 2013 or get delayed until sometime in 2014.

Microsoft is apparently planning to make it possible for future apps for Windows 8 to work inside Windows Phone devices as well, with no need to port them. The company recently posted a job listing looking for someone to work on such a project. If the Windows Phone Blue team is behind that of the regular Windows Blue project, we might not see that kind of cross application support for a little while longer.

Thanks to Foxie for the tip!

IMHO, WP Blue was always intended to be RTM'd after Windows Blue. I think the release schedule will be very similar to the previous WinPhone launches of late Oct/Early Nov.

Windows Blue will prob RTM in June/July for a late Aug/early Sept back to school release.

Any delay in WinPhone Blue would mean a delay in new handsets such as Nokia 'cat walk'/HTC Zenith, which both Nokia and Microsoft can NOT afford to risk...even if it means cutting certain WinP Blue feature(s) and add them at a later date.

Don't forget... We had the exact same rumours before Windows Phone 8 was to be released.

Exactly. I agree entirely.

They delay anything Nokia should dump them for Android. FULL STOP! Pathetic.

Please stop this planet and dump this turd off to the moon or something.

You are a clown. Here in Asia it's common knowledge that Samsung, Huawei and ZTE are all planning to dump Android later this year. Watch out for each of these companies Tizen phones by Xmas.

So your advice to Nokia is to abandon a rising star and settle for a turd that's about to be flushed down the toilet. This is obviously why you're not CEO of Nokia.

MS will deliver something this year. It may not be what they are internally calling Windows Phone Blue, but they will deliver something. They have no other choice if they want to stay in the mobile game.

Agreed. It's silly to think otherwise...

Though I think they will still push to get Blue out across all major platforms at the same time.

Windows Phone and Windows Blue are two different things; there is already a successor to portico in the worlds being marked as Apollo plus but Blue is most likely an update to Windows 8 that fills in areas where WinRT is lacking - maybe extending WinRT functionality so one can write desktop and 'modern' applications using the WinRT framework.

The "rumors" from "unnamed sources", you gotta love the jargon, indicated that Blue was supposed to include some "metrification" of Excel and One Note for WP as well.
Again.... rumors...

Anyone who thinks for a moment that Microsoft will ever depart the "mobile game" doesn't know much about their history or what's about to happen in Asia.

Android RIP.

so, you need to pay the carrier service provider and pay to Microsoft seperately ?

Not sure how this relates to the article at all. Microsoft and Nokia just signed agreements with VimpelCom which is the parent company to many Mobile Virtual Network Operators across the globe to bring Store purchases to your telco bill.

So if that's what you're talking about, look for the VimpelCom subsidiary in your area.
There are a few other carriers that have been doing this from day 1. At Microsoft's partner conference last year, they cited a 70% uptake increase on paid store apps when carrier based billing is an option.

I Hope they do not wait for some of the things need in windows phone 8 like playlist management till 2014. I hope they still release updates like portico.

Should see an announcement in a couple of weeks in regard to the next update.

There needs to be a massive feature release to keep me on the platform.

I'd be happy enough being able to skip parts of songs.

Hold the forward button?

for audio books or long songs the current controls really sucks. I would love to be able to use a slider for better control.

Agree. I'm ok with 8, but if there aren't major updates, improvements, waaaaay before 2014, that's not going to be good for Windows 8 or Windows RT, Window Phone 8 (Zune works with 7), or either Surface (though the pro will do OK as a laptop alternative).

Do you mean Apollo Plus? I expect, and hope,to hear something about it next week in Barcelona... and hopefully have it available before Summer.
At least it seems that now it is called " Blue" only and no longer, as I read in some news before "Code Blue"....

Completely agree. Microsoft is behind, by a long way, they really need to pull their finger out and catch up, they should be constantly updating this thing.

If that's all that's keeping you from switching let's all wish you the best of luck with Android. I'm sure you'll be whining again later this year when the Asians dump that OS though.
