Free InDesign alternative?

Well, yes and no. For most projects Scribus is a great alternative. But there are some drawbacks, like the use of master pages. Sometimes Scribus just ignores my master pages on output and I have to manually remove / add them again. Which is no big deal, but it can become annoying when you're on a deadline. On big plus though, Scribus is able to create some high quality PDF's with the right settings.
