Songbird is an open-source customizable music player that's under active development.

It is integrated with these Web 2.0 services: mashTape, SHOUTcast Radio, Last.fm Scrobbling, and Songkick concert tickets. You can enhance Songbird with community-contributed plugins like Media Flow.

The PlaylistCommandsBuilders interface has been deprecated. Add-on developers should use the new playlistcommands interface

Sure, the closed, proprietary database format is obstructive, however there are a handful of other freeware programs out there than support the newer iPod models, so it's not entirely impossible.
